Every fall, homeowners are faced with cascades of red, purple, orange, and yellow leaves falling from the sky. Amid this rainbow of autumn activity, some people still have “green” on their minds - as in eco-friendly ways they can embark on fall cleanup.

Removing leaves from the lawn and yard is a task that few people relish. It can often mean hours spent gathering leaves and then fi nding ways to dispose of them. Some homeowners stack leaves at the curb in bins and bags. Others torch them in a huge bonfi re. Still others scatter them to the street with a gas-powered blower. While these methods may be fast or effi cient in their own ways, they are not the most environmentally friendly ways to handle leaf removal. Instead, there are some other tactics you can take.

Rather than thinking of ways to remove leaves, a greener idea is to think of ways to repurpose leaves. Even though they’ve passed their prime on the limbs of trees, fallen leaves can be an essential part of the ecosystem even after they’ve fallen.

MUCH ABOUT MULCHFallen leaves can make an ideal mulch, helping to

deliver nutrients to the soil during the stark, winter months. Placing shredded leaves around the base of shrubbery and trees can help insulate the root systems and nourish them. Decomposing leaves also provide food to soil insects, including earthworms.

‘LEAF’ THEM ALONEUnless the lawn is completely inundated with leaves,

it is alright to leave some behind. Animals preparing their winter nests for hibernation can collect leaves and use them to insulate their cozy retreats. Leaves can act as fertilizer to the lawn and also provide food sources to insects.

GET COMPOSTINGSavvy homeowners who have a compost pile to

create “black gold” for their vegetables and fl owers

can add fallen leaves to the pile as part of the secret recipe to wonderful fertilizer. What’s more, because this compost pile is likely close by, individuals won’t need to cart heavy leaves long distances for disposal. Simply wheelbarrow them over to the compost heap and dump.

RAKE FOR HEALTHLeaf blowers may make fast work

of gathering leaves to one area, but they are noisy, smelly and burn gasoline unnecessarily. Instead, look to the old-fashioned garden rake. A person will not need to visit the gym that day because raking can burn hundreds of calories in an hour and work the muscles in the arms and shoulders effectively. For those prone to blisters, wear gloves and take frequent breaks.

IDEAL INSULATIONLeaves can insulate more than chipmunk nests. Rake

some into bags to place around the perimeter of the home’s foundation for a little extra weatherproofi ng when it is cold. Surround outdoor garden containers to insulate the soil of delicate plants that will overwinter outside or in the garage. Trees like palms or fi gs that need to be covered when it gets cold can get extra warmth from insulating bags of leaves.

ART PROJECTSAlthough you cannot use all of the leaves that fall from

trees, children and adults can make home decor or art projects with some of the best of the bunch. String leaves for autumn decorating garlands on mailboxes or around doors. Press leaves between waxed paper and iron lightly to make keepsakes. Place leaves in between pieces of clear contact paper or laminating paper. Cut around the leaf design and punch a hole at the top for a hanging string. These can then be used as a bookmark, ornament or doorknob sign.

The possibilities for green uses for autumn leaves are many. This fall, homeowners can be environmentally conscious and clean up at the same time.

Every fall, homeowners are can add fallen leaves to the pile as Every fall, homeowners are Every fall, homeowners are

Faced with the prospect of another

season spent p r e c a r i o u s l y

climbing a ladder and reaching inside

roof gutters to clear out debris and leaves, many homeowners are considering the installation of a gutter protection system. And with so many different types available, fi nding the right fi t is not always so easy.

A gutter protection system is a cover or barrier that prevents leaves and large items, such as twigs or blown-around matter, from lodging in a home’s gutters and eventually preventing rain runoff from draining effectively. Clogged gutters and

downspouts have been known to contribute to rainwater pooling around the foundation of a home, potentially causing

seepage issues. Blocked gutters can also be a haven for

stagnant water, which breeds mosquitoes and other insects as well as

potentially harmful bacteria. To combat these issues,

manufacturers have come up with a series of protection systems that allow water to enter the gutter while keeping debris out of it. Gutter protection systems range from do-it-yourself (DIY) options to professionally installed products. There are a few different styles, and each offers their share of pros and cons.

• Screen: A mesh or screen system consists of a screening material that fi ts inside or over the gutter. It

serves as a sieve, allowing the water through, but blocking

leaves and debris. This system

is affordable and can be a DIY project. But over a period of time, the mesh itself can be blocked with a build-up of debris, so the screens will need periodic cleaning. Also, in some screened systems water can freeze up in the screen openings, causing ice dams.

• Aluminum covers: There are many different aluminum options. Some work with a small crevice along the top that is narrow enough for the rainwater to enter but not to allow debris inside. These systems may not allow as much water to enter as a mesh system because they cover a greater surface area over the gutter. Closed systems also may provide an area for insects to make nests.

• Foam inserts: A relatively inexpensive protection system is a foam insert. In these systems, pieces of porous foam are fi tted inside the gutter, allowing water to fl ow through (albeit a little more slowly) while keeping leaves out. Foam inserts are an easy DIY project and can serve as a test of the effi cacy of gutter systems before a more expensive system is purchased.

• Surface tension products: These are closed plastic or aluminum products where the water entry holes or channels are on the bottom and sides of the product. This way, nothing can ever get clogged from above. The system works by water surface tension; the rainwater will adhere to the product and then fl ow into the bottom or side holes. The nose of these products may have to be kept clean, or the surface tension may not occur.

When it comes to gutter protection s y s t e m s , there are a number of options to consider. Homeowners can experiment with different low-cost systems to see if one works before contracting to have a permanent guard put in place.

30 Year Anniversary

merchandiseredition

Every weekend of the last few months, you have probably spent time mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming your lawn so that it will look its best. In order to ensure that your lawn makes a complete recovery after winter hibernation, you may want to spend the fall taking steps to help your lawn survive the winter months ahead.

The job of winterizing a lawn varies, depending on where you live and how harsh a typical winter is. There are certain key tasks to complete before you can rest for the winter season.

* Remove fallen leaves and debris. Leaf cleanup is among the tasks homeowners tend to dread the most. Raking leaves can be arduous, but it is well worth the effort. Fallen leaves can smother the grass and lead to dead spots and decay next season. Wait until the majority of the leaves have fallen from the trees before you begin to rake; otherwise, you could fi nd yourself repeating the process throughout the fall. Mulched leaves can be added in small amounts to garden beds to provide rich organic material for next year’s crop of fl owers.

Be sure to pick up any twigs and other debris as well. Additional debris can become up trapped under snow and hinder grass growth when spring arrives.

* Cut your lawn short. Unless the season is unseasonably wet and warm, your lawn shouldn’t grow too much in October and November. Continue to cut your lawn until there is no visible growth for about two weeks. It pays to give it a short cut before frost arrives so that long piles of dead grass will not smother any new growth in the spring. Also, long grass tends to bend down upon itself, trapping moisture that can lead to fungal diseases like snow mold.

* Aerate the lawn. Soil can be compacted over time, especially in yards that see heavy foot traffi c. You can rent an aerator from a lawn supply store so that water and fertilizer can reach the soil.

* Fertilize. Now is the time to give the lawn fresh food to overwinter and also to replenish the strength of the root system. All summer long the lawn has been depleting the soil of nutrition, but autumn presents a great opportunity to strengthen those roots. Consider a slow-release formula designed for winterizing that will feed the lawn all winter long.

* Edge the garden beds. Take advantage of the cooler weather and slow-growing grass to re-edge around fl ower beds. Even though the grass above the surface of the soil will stop growing, the roots will remain viable and the lawn will still be sending out rhizomes and tillers to produce new grass blades in the spring. These can easily encroach on garden beds. Edge now so you will have less work to do in the spring.

* Trim hedges and trees. If there are any overhanging tree branches or shrubbery blocking sunlight from reaching the lawn, cut back these areas once the foliage has thinned. Take advantage of your town’s leaf and twig pickup services.

* Seed bare patches. Scour the lawn for bare patches and put down some seed in these areas. The cooler weather will enable the seeds to germinate without having to compete with weed growth.

Once you have prepared your lawn for the winter, you can bring in any lawn tools that need repair and have them fi xed and packed away for the spring.

After a summer’s worth of memories and fun in the sun, pool owners know as the leaves begin to change color and the air starts to grow cooler that it is time to close their pool for the coming fall and winter seasons. Many times, closing the pool requires a team effort, so enlist the help of a spouse, friend or family member before beginning the process.

The fi rst thing that is essential to winterizing the pool is having all of your equipment ready. Depending on the type of pool you have, this equipment can vary. But have all tools, winterizing chemicals and water plugs at the ready. Although in-ground pools and above-ground ones have similar winterizing steps, there are a few differences between the two, and it is important to be aware of those differences.

Thoroughly vacuum the bottom of the pool and clean the walls. You want to remove as much organic material as possible, such as algae and dead insects, prior to covering the pool so that there is a higher propensity that the water will be crystal clear next spring or summer when you reopen.

Once the pool has been vacuumed and cleaned, backwash the fi lter to remove any excess residue. Remove plugs or open drain ports on the fi lter and let all of the water fl ow out of the fi lter. Give the fi lter components, including skimmer baskets, a good rinse with water and allow them to dry.

Next, disconnect the pool’s pump and fi lter. Everything should be totally drained of any water. With an above-ground pool, remove intake and output hoses and drain. For in-ground pools, use an air compressor or a shop vacuum to blow out any residual water from the return pipes, and then promptly plug up the ports.

Some people prefer to plug the skimmer return as well and to leave the water level of the pool as is. However, it is also possible to drain the pool water level below the skimmer level. Use duct tape or some other blockage method to cover all exposed pipes or openings to the pool to

prevent anything from getting inside. This includes any insects and rodents looking for places to set up winter camp.

While some people keep their fi lters disconnected and outdoors for the winter, the pump should be moved into a garage or shed. Do the same with the fi lter if you have room, in order to better safeguard the equipment.

Pool owners should also test the pool water chemistry and adjust the pH, calcium hardness and total alkalinity according to recommended levels. You should then prepare to add the desired mix of chemicals to the pool to sanitize it for the season. Most people use a combination of algaecide and chlorine as their winterizing chemicals. However, if the chlorine level is high enough, algaecide may not be necessary. Raise the chlorine to shock level - much higher than the recommended level for when the pool is running. Thoroughly mix granulated chemicals to prevent them from settling on the liner and causing stains.

The cover should be placed on the pool and properly secured. This is where an extra person comes in handy so that the cover can be maneuvered easily. In above-ground pools, an infl ated pillow is often used to alleviate ice expansion and prevent the walls of the pool from splitting. It is not for the purpose of keeping rainwater from accumulating on the top of the cover.

Store all of the pool equipment for the winter season, and during the cold weather, periodically check the cover, air pillow and water tubes for any damage.

Although closing a pool is not terribly diffi cult, it can be a daunting task for those who have never owned a pool in the past. When in doubt, it is best to consult with technicians from a pool service company.
