A Guide ToSummerPlantsBy Ronald Scaglia
Long Island gardeners, the time hasfinally arrived. Since the depressingdays of last autumn, when the beau-
tiful gardens succumbed to the coolerweather, gardeners across the region havebeen anxiously waiting to replant their gar-dens and bring back brightly colored yardsand vivid landscapes. Well, according toCornell Cooperative Extension, the finalfrost date for our region has passed and it isfinally time to plant. To help Long Islanders plan their master-
pieces, below is a guide to some of the morepopular plants that gardeners decorate theirproperties with. Walt Dworkin, green goodssales associate with Hicks Nurseries in West-bury, shared some insights into some of themore popular late spring and summer plants.
ImpatiensAccording to Dworkin, these are the most popular annuals. He
says that these plants will do best in semi-sunny to shady condi-tions. To achieve a nice look, Dworkin recommends using impa-tiens as a border in front of other shrubs. He also says that impa-tiens look great in pots and can be used as hanging plants or todecorate a stoop. They also look terrific in strawberry planters.Impatiens are available in a large assortment of colors including
red, purple, pink, lavender and orange.
New Guinea ImpatiensAs with the impatiens, New Guinea impatiens are often used as
borders or in hanging baskets. They are available in lavender, white, salmon, red, or as Dworkin says, “Just about every color
but yellow.” They are annuals like impatiens but differ in thatNew Guinea impatiens do better in full sunlight or light shade.
LobeliasFor those with shadier properties who are looking to add color
to brighten things up, lobelias are a great choice. These annualsdo very well in shade. They are available in a beautiful blue aswell as lavender and white.“These are great for shady spots and they give great color,” says
Dworkin. He also advises that gardeners be careful to provide lobelias
with the right among of water. According to Dworkin, theseplants should be allowed to approach dryness, emphasizing the
Geraniums, as seen here, are very popular plants that should be kept in sunlight.

A long with milder weather, spring brings a list ofmany chores that homeowners must attend to. Asthe weather warms up, thoughts may turn to lawn
cleanups and planting flowers. There are also many pleas-ant springtime activities to enjoy such as baseball andwalking through a park as the buds emerge on the trees.Taking a refreshing dip into one’s backyard pool
might have to wait until the weather gets a bit warmer. And with so many other activities to keep them busy, homeowners may neglect to do maintenance on theirpools and wait for the warm summer months, whenpools are most often enjoyed. However, spring is actually the best time to prepare a
pool for summer. By opening their pool after the first ex-tended warm spell, homeowners will save time, moneyand energy. Just like the buds on the trees that begin togrow after the first warm days of spring, so does the plantlife inside of pools. There’s no getting around it.By opening their pools early, homeowners can eliminate
the expense of additional chemicals, the time it takes tovacuum the pool over and over to clean it, as well as theextra work it will take to get the pool in shape. Experts atIsland Recreation agree that early opening is the only wayto go, but many hold off for all the wrong reasons.Myth: Running the filter in spring is an added expense.Fact: Because of the cooler temperatures, the filter only
needs to be run for a short period of time each day, whichwill save money on electricity.Myth: Once the cover is off, algae will grow.Fact; Algae begin to grow once the winterizing chemi-
cals dissipate. This happens after the first week of springtemperatures.Myth: Keeping the pool running in spring, when it is
not in use, will waste chemicals.Fact: The cooler water temperatures in spring actually
demand fewer chemicals, far less than would be used toclear up a green or cloudy pool by waiting to open it.In addition, opening the pool early is easier since a big
cleanup will not have to be done. And one of the best rea-
sons to open a pool in spring is getting to enjoy it sooner. After the mild weather that Long Island experienced thisyear, along with spring temperatures that have alreadyreached 80 degrees, it is not hard to fathom that verywarm days, which are ideal for enjoying all of the bene-fits that a pool offers, will soon be here. When a pool is opened, a mineral remover should be
added to the water. This will remove minerals in the tapwater that can cause discoloration and make it falsely ap-pear that algae are present.A fresh test kit should always be used. A pool test kit is
like milk, eggs and other perishable items in a refrigerator. It has an expiration date. As test kits get older, they becomeless accurate. Since homeowners are relying on the kit foradding pool chemicals, it should be as accurate as possibleto help save money by not adding unnecessary chemicals. All shocks are not created equal. Concentrated shocks
such as Blue Seal Green Out are recommended by poolprofessionals at Island Recreational because they give a
lasting boost to the chlorine level instead of dissipatingrapidly like many calcium-based shocks. The opening chemicals shouldn’t be added in all at
once. Many need time to work on their own. Those usingchemicals should follow the instructions and always runthe filter between chemical treatments. Those who prefer the hands-free approach to pool
maintenance can check out salt chlorine generators. They allow pool owners to actually make their ownchlorine. These systems convert salt in the swimmingpool water and change it into chlorine while automati-cally sanitizing the pool. This means no chlorine bucketsto buy, none to haul to the pool and none to store in ashed. The salt chlorine generator of choice by the poolprofessionals of Island Recreation is the SWS brand. They have models for every size and shape pool and arerecognized for their reliability and performance.

W hen Bob Conaghan became as-sociate director of AdelphiUniversity’s Department of Fa-
cilities Management, he couldn’t believehis eyes. As he looked at the stockpile offertilizer, he saw the warning labels onthe packaging, including the skull andcrossbones, indicating toxic material. Hesoon came to the scary realization thatthis poison would be put down on thefields where Adelphi students would beplaying games and enjoying picnics.Conaghan immediately knew that achange was in order and he quicklyswitched Adelphi over to an organic lawnand gardening program.“It was a no brainer,” says Conaghan of
his decision to switch to organic lawn careat Adelphi. When he made the switch, Conaghan
was warned that the grounds would notlook as nice and that he was putting hisnew job in jeopardy. However, a dozenyears later, Conaghan is still here and thegrounds of the university look magnifi-cent. And now he’s advising Long Islandhomeowners to do the same with theirlawns and gardens.“I would recommend for everyone to go
organic,” he says emphatically.Conaghan gives two primary reasons
for his preference of organic materials. The first of these is safety. He simply doesnot like putting poison down on areaswhere children, pets and even adultsspend time.“Is that something [chemicals] you’re
going to put down where your childrenare going to play?” Conaghan asks. “Notme. I feel it was common practice onLong Island, way back when. It still is one
to a good extent. A lot of schools still usethat stuff. [Also], homeowners with theirpets out in the yard.”He adds that some homeowners become
careless when applying these chemicalsand pesticides. For example, he says thatmany homeowners apply grub killers tolawns without measuring the size of thegrass or determining the proper amount.Instead, they recklessly apply all the con-tents of the pesticide to their lawns in dis-proportionate amounts.“And they’re wondering why there’s 20
or 30 dead birds in the neighborhood aweek later,” he comments. “Most have atendency thinking more is better. They
buy a bag with 5,000 or 10,000 squarefeet coverage and they’ll put the wholething down on their lawn.”Conaghan also recommends organic
products in lawn and garden care becausehe simply feels that organic materials arebetter for lawns and plants in keepingthem healthy. He says there has been a bigimprovement in the horticulture at Adel-phi since the switch was made.“Much better, it’s night and day,” he
says.Conaghan explains that plants need far
more vitamins and minerals than mostpeople think. While fertilizer bags showthe nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium
content of the fertilizer, Conaghan assertsthat other nutrients are essential. In fact,he says that there are about three dozenvitamins and minerals that grass andplants need to be healthy. He further elaborates that chemical fer-
tilizers and other such products will killmany of the microorganisms that live inthe soil. So, while a lawn that is plasteredwith chemicals may temporarily have theeffect of looking nice and green, under-neath, Conaghan says, it is really un-healthy.“These microorganisms, 99 percent are
beneficial in the soil,” Conaghan states.“They come and help the plants stayhealthy and survive. When you’re puttingdown the chemical fertilizers in gardensor in your lawns, you’re wiping out allthese natural organisms.”By contrast, he says that organic fertil-
izers help to keep microorganisms alivein the soil. He further elaborates thatwhen the populations of these microor-ganisms are at their proper levels, theworms and other organisms will self-aerate the soil so the homeowner maynot have to do so. Additionally, he saysthat will help the soil better retain waterand oxygen, thus resulting in betterplants and lawns.“When you put down the organic fertil-
izer, it’s going to get right to the roots andyou’ll be feeding your soil and your grasswith what it really needs, not these chemi-cals,” Conaghan advises. However, before rushing out to the
nearest nursery, Conaghan does cautionabout some of the differences between or-ganic and chemical gardening. One ofthese is the effort that is required. He says

word “approach.” However, he also says thatadding too much water can be just as detrimental asallowing the soil to go bone dry.“You don’t want to keep watering and rot it out,”
he says.He further states that the amount of water de-
pends on the weather. If the summer is cool anddamp, lobelias may only need to be watered onceper week. If it’s hot and dry, much more wateringwill be required.
PetuniasAnother very popular and traditional summer
plant are petunias. These are quite popular asground cover, but also make a nice display if pottedin a container or a window box. These annuals willlast until the first frost, according to Dworkin andthrive in sunlight. They come in a wide assortmentof colors.“White, yellow, purples, orange, blue and every-
thing in between,” says Dworkin of colors thatpetunias are available in.He also adds that many gardeners with sunny lo-
cations will alternate between red, white and bluepetunias to give a patriotic look. This is especiallytimely during the late spring and early summermonths when a trio of American holidays – Memo-rial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day – arecelebrated.
CalibrachoaAnother choice for adding to a brilliant land-
scape are calibrachoa. These plants look terrificwhen cascaded as they have a nice effect whenhanging down. They have a very small leaf thatDworkin describes as dainty.Calibrachoa are available in white and purple and
will do best in filtered sun, as direct sunlight will drythem out, yet they will not dowell in complete shade ei-ther. Dworkin also recom-mends this plant because ofthe nice fragrance it has.
Geraniums“One of America’s most
popular house plants,” ishow Dworkin describesgeraniums. These plantsthrive in direct sunlight, canbe enjoyed through the au-tumn, and come in manydifferent shades. These areused mostly in pots, accord-ing to Dworkin.Gardeners should be care-
ful to not overly water theseplants, which Dworkin de-scribes as succulent. In-stead, he recommends thatthe soil be allowed to dryslightly in between water-ings. He also advises thatgardeners break off oldflowers so that the energygoes into new buds.
DahliasIf you want a plant that has big flowers, then
dahlias might be your plant of choice. These comein three sizes, a border size which is low to theground, a medium size and a dinner-plate sizewhich can get very tall and quite big. Dahlias comein white, red and purple and will bloom up until thefirst frost. As with geraniums, Dworkin recom-mends removing the old flowers. An interesting feature of dahlias is they are
tuberous, like potatoes, so a skilled gardener cansave the tuber as winter approaches and reproducethe dahlias the following spring. To do this,Dworkin says the tuber must be dug up after thefirst frost and stored in a cool dry place that is, ide-ally, between 40 and 46 degrees. A garage or ashed might be a good spot. In addition, Dworkinrecommends keeping the tuber in dry peat mossand cutting off any parts that show signs of rot.Dahlias do best in sunlight. With all of these plants, Dworkin says that the
key factor is proper watering. He says that mostplants suffer because gardeners recklessly waterthem too much.“Most people kill plants by constantly pouring
water,” says Dworkin. He says this is especially true of potted plants, as
these plants are in an artificial environment. Thoseplants in containers should have drainage holes, says Dworkin.Conversely, not enough water can be just as
harmful and gardeners should not allow soil to getcompletely dry. Instead, gardeners should monitorthe soil to determine if water is indeed needed.“If the soil is wet, you don’t want to keep water-
ing it,” advises Dworkin. “You’ve got to water ac-cording to the needs of the plant and the weather.”Dworkin also recommends using a brand name
fertilizer, which he says he applies to his plantstwice a month.
Dahlias have big flowers and come in varied sizes, including onethat is quite large and tall.
New Guinea impatiens, which are seen here, are also quite popularwith gardeners.
A combination of red, white and blue flowers will create a festivelook for Memorial Day or the Fourth of July.
A Guide To Summer Plants
These impatiens will do quite well in semi-sunny to shady locationsand are quite popular.

Expert Recommends Organic Lawn Care
The lawns on which Adelphi students congregate, play, and study are not treatedwith chemical products.
that many brand name chemical productsnow come in easy applications. Converse-ly, organic materials tend to be weakerthan chemical products. Therefore moreapplications are necessary.“An organic program is a little more in-
volved,” he states. “We do eight applica-tions a year of fertilizer.”Homeowners using organic products
also need to be patient. Conaghan advis-es that organic products will take alonger period of time to get the soil at itspeak. Therefore, the instantaneous greenthat results from a chemical applicationmay not be seen immediately when ap-plying organic products. However,Conaghan advises that to have a healthyand lush looking lawn and garden, it is
well worth the wait.“Organic does take more time with ap-
plications,” he says. “But over time, onceyou get your lawn where it should be,you’re going to be spending less. In thelong run, organic is going to work.”
continued from page 6“Is that something [chemicals]you’re going to put downwhere your children are going to play?”
- Bob Conaghan, associate director ofAdelphi University’s Department of
Facilities Management

Homeowners can now bring the comforts of theirhomes from the inside to the outside, thanks to awhole new crop of outdoor living conveniences.
Among these are open-air kitchens, outdoor fireplacesand fire pits, and what are commonly referred to as “out-door rooms.” However, the cost connected with installation can
cause budgets to rise to a level higher than homeownersare comfortable with. This is especially true when qual-ity is of paramount importance, as it should be. Cam-bridge Pavingstone, a manufacturer in the concretepavingstone and wall systems industry, can help do-it-yourselfers, landscape designers, and professional con-tractors address current trends in outdoor living and
turn wish lists into reality. Cambridge Pavingstones with Ar-
mortec® and Cambridge Wallstones of-fer a comprehensive line of products foroutdoor lifestyles that combine unmis-taken quality, natural beauty, and valuewith design versatility. However, Cam-bridge has eased the design/build factorwith all-inclusive, prepackaged designkits on their entire line of outdoor livingproducts. For example, their fire pit kits are
ready to install. Models are complete withgrates for grilling, optional fire screensand galvanized, stainless steel covers,
while the outdoorfireplaces have di-mensional cast stonesurround options in achoice of colors. There is even an
L-shaped, open-airkitchen kit with astainless steel appliance package and adecorator-inspired, granite countertopincluded. More adventurous cookingenthusiasts can opt for a CambridgeOutdoor Pizza Oven Kit that alsobakes bread and roasts veggies withan old world, brick oven flavor de-rived from an authentic wood-firedoven. Homeowners can also choose aprepackaged Cambridge Patio Pub &Bistro Table for seating and gatheringand/or a Grill and Bar Module Kit forfood preparation, all with tops inmatching granite.Another garden structure is a pergo-
la. It is typically open-sided and con-sists of pillars that support a partially
open roof structure, such as latticework or a trellis. Incontrast, a patio pavilion also has open sides, but a closedroof. Both can convert an open patio into a sheltered out-door room. Columns (pillars) can be anchored into thepavement or set on pedestals a few feet above ground lev-el. If getting involved with building these kinds of struc-tures seems a bit intimidating, Cambridge offers both per-golas and pavilions also in prepackaged kits. The struc-tures are set on any Cambridge wallstone columns (soldseparately). For added convenience, a prepackaged col-umn kit is available in a variety of color options. Pre-cut and prepackaged kits help professionals give
homeowners competitive pricing by reducing time and la-bor costs and will help make for greater outdoor living ex-periences this season. For more outdoor living ideas andthe nearest distributor, visit Cambridge online atwww.cambridgepavers.com or send an email to [email protected].

Picture this: You’re in the throes ofwinter, at the end of February to beexact. You look out your window at
the howling wind, the bare trees, and thefrozen ground. Traces of snow and ice stillremain from the last snowfall. The sunbreaks through intermittently, but yourmood is gray. Although officially thewinter is only about 7 weeks old, it feelslike it’s been going on forever. Your minddrifts back toward summer with its blueskies, green lawns, foliage and flowers. How you miss those bright, warm days. They seem so far away. But wait! You step over to the other side
of the house where your home-built, plas-tic/polyethylene-covered window box ishanging, soaking in light, and where littlegreen things are sprouting. These are theseeds you planted just a few weeks ago andthey are now growing—lettuce seeds, curlyendives, onions, leeks. You examine themclosely, trying to gauge how much they’vegrown since yesterday. Oh, it must be atleast a quarter of an inch! Suddenly, yourmood is lifted. The heat and light that fillthe inside of the box seem to radiatethroughout the entire room and beyond. You look out the window again, at the hard, frozen ground, and this time in place of thelifeless earth you saw a moment ago, yousee in your mind’s eye the lush garden itwas just a few months before and will startto be again a few more weeks from now.You see big, fresh salads every night fordinner. You see luscious red tomatoes, ten-der green beans, cucumbers, peppers, andall that other good stuff that comes out ofthe ground. Not so oddly, these delicateseedlings inside the window box, with theirpromise of things to come in the weeks and
months ahead, make the winter feel a littleless bitter and a little more tolerable, andthey tell you that spring is right around thecorner. Life feels good again. This is the power that gardening has. It
can lift your spirits just like that! Out ofbare soil come little green things that be-come big green things that finally becomea backyard full of succulent vegetables.Nationwide, backyard gardens have seen
a steady surge in growth over the last sever-al years. They have become as popular asthe so-called “Victory Gardens” of WorldWar II, only this time for different reasons.Back in the war years it was the patrioticthing to do – grow a garden. The U.S. wasthen unquestionably the breadbasket of theworld, and the crops that came out of ourenormous agricultural system were needednot only to feed us at home and our service-men here and abroad, but also our allies, whose countries and farmlands were beingcrippled by the war. To take some of thestrain off that system, citizens here were en-couraged to establish backyard gardenswhere they could grow some of their ownfood. In neighborhood after neighborhood, victory gardens sprouted. Today, there’s anew dynamic at work. Because of increasedconsumer awareness, greater numbers ofpeople are conscious about the things theyeat and the chemicals used to grow them, somany of them are turning more and more tostarting their own gardens. For the summermonths at least, the thinking goes, they caneat their own homegrown freshly picked,toxin-free vegetables. In the meantime, theyare discovering what great fun it is to spenda couple of hours on a quiet summer daytending to their gardens.Still, the overwhelming majority of them
are missing a great deal of that fun, and cer-
tainly a lot of the satisfaction, that comesfrom one overlooked aspect of gardening. InMay and June they drive over to the gardencenters where they fill their carts with traysof seedlings, when they could very well begrowing their own in the middle of winter,in preparation for spring, and thus enjoy thefull experience of gardening all the waythrough from the very beginning to the end– starting one’s own seeds to picking one’sown fruit. And while all this is going on,they could find that not only could they savea lot of money, but they could also get adeeper understanding of how a gardengrows, which can only improve their results. It’s not yet too late, but growing one’s
own seedlings requires a lot of planningand tooling up. If one is not ready to startthis year, one can think about next year.Sadly, that will come in the blink of aneye so it’s never really too late.Frank Salerno is the author of From
Seed to Salad: A Step-By-Step Manual forBackyard Gardening.

New Ways To Look AtBuying Light Bulbs
Tips from NYSERDAfor consumers
New lighting choices and lightbulb packaging are showing upon store shelves due to energy
efficiency standards launched nationwideat the beginning of January. This meansshopping for light bulbs is different thanit’s been in the past. The new standards require that light bulbs
be 25 percent more efficient than traditionalincandescent bulbs. The first changes, which began in January, are to 100-wattbulbs, followed by 75-, 60- and 40-wattbulbs over the next two years. In addition, new packaging for light bulbs will make iteasier to compare bulbs that use differenttechnologies, such as incandescent bulbs,Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs), halo-gens and Light Emitting Diodes (LED).The New York State Energy Research
and Development Authority (NYSERDA)offers these tips when shopping for lightbulbs as standards and packaging change:• Understand your choices: The new light
bulb standards will result in more lightingoptions than ever before. Consumers canchoose among energy-efficient incandes-cent bulbs, CFLs, halogens and LED tech-nology – all of which will be at least 25percent more energy efficient than the 125-year-old Edison light bulb, one of the mostinefficient products in most homes.• Get to know your lumens: The new
light bulb packaging includes a new stan-dardization measure – lumens. This meas-ures how much light a bulb producesrather than how much energy it uses, which is measured in watts. Lumens makeit easier to buy the amount of light youneed. A bulb with more lumens producesbright light, regardless of the type of bulb.Less lumens means dimmer light. Withthis new standardization, comparison-shopping by lumens will help consumerscompare “apples to apples” across incan-descent bulbs, CFLs, halogens and LEDs.• Read the Lighting Facts Label to com-
pare bulbs: In addition to lumen and watt
information, the new lighting includes es-timated yearly energy cost, life expectan-cy of the bulb and light appearance on ascale of warm (more yellow) to cool(more blue). With more lighting technolo-gies to choose from, this information willmake it easier to determine the right bulbfor the job.• Try something new and save money:
The new lighting standards will help con-sumers use less energy and spend lessmoney on energy bills for the sameamount of light. A typical householdcould potentially save $100 to $150 peryear on electric bills by using a combina-tion of the more energy-efficient bulbs. For more information, visit: http://www.
nyserda.ny.gov/en/Page-Sections/Residential/Energy-Efficient-and-ENERGY-STAR-Products/Lighting/Lighting-Standards.aspxNYSERDA, a public benefit corpora-
tion, offers objective information andanalysis, innovative programs, technicalexpertise, and funding to help New York-ers increase energy efficiency, save mon-ey, use renewable energy, and reduce theirreliance on fossil fuels. NYSERDA pro-fessionals work to protect our environ-ment and create clean energy jobs. NY-SERDA has been developing partnershipsto advance innovative energy solutions inNew York since 1975.
New energy efficient light bulbs asseen here, can save homeowners mon-ey on their electricity costs.
