Welcome to the UNC Academic Advising Program’s Virtual Registration Advising Session

•Although this is a virtual session, we will cover the same items that we would cover in an in-person workshop.

In this presentation, we will discuss:

•Useful planning tools that are essential to a smooth registration process

•Information about Experiential and Supplemental Education requirements and how to fulfill those requirements

•Planning for the summer and beyond

•And some helpful registration tips to be sure you are putting yourself in the best position to get into the classes you want and/or need

Script

The planning tools we will be discussing are the Tar Heel Tracker, the UNC course catalog, academic worksheets, and the course search function in Connect Carolina

Script

We’ll start with the Tar Heel Tracker, which is an online degree audit. To access it, go to the drop-down menu in your Student Center on Connect Carolina and select “Tar Heel Tracker.” Then click the arrow button next to the drop-down menu.

The default view of the Tar Heel Tracker may seem a little hard to understand at first. For a simpler, more straightforward view, click on the button at the top that reads “View Summary Report.”

This view shows you what requirements you have left (it includes both completed and enrolled requirements). The areas highlighted in red indicate what you still need to complete.. With this knowledge in hand, you can search for appropriate course requirements that you have left to complete. Make plans to complete remaining GenEds and Major Requirements before Graduation.

You can use the UNC catalog by going to catalog.unc.edu to find major and minor requirements as well as course descriptions. You can also find pre-requisite and GenEd courses there. Also included is information on policies and departmental contacts should you need them.

The final planning tool that we will discuss is the Academic worksheets. Academic worksheets are a critical resource that can help you keep track of your requirements for your major. You can access academic worksheets on our advising page by going to advising.unc.edu. and clicking on the clipboard icon that includes the title “Find Academic Worksheets”

From there you will find worksheets listed in alphabetical order.

· Click on the department name to see a list of major options

· This may include BA, BS and/or specialization options within each category.

· It will also indicate different years. These worksheets show the rules and course lists from those years or ‘Requirement Terms’(referred to as RT)

· Your default RT is the year you entered UNC. While here, you may decide to change your requirement term to a more recent term (though, this doesn’t happen automatically). Speak to an advisor if you have questions.

Script

Click on the major worksheet of your choosing, with the appropriate requirement term, to open it. As you can remember from orientation, the worksheet is composed of general education and major requirements. Two areas that we want to explore in more detail are Experiential Education (referred to as EE) and Supplemental Education. The next slides highlight two requirements you may not have learned much about before.

There are multiple ways to fulfill the EE requirement: Many of them many require you to initiate contact with them or to submit an application.

Some of these options include:

· Any Study Abroad approved by UNC - Go to studyabroad.unc.edu to learn more.

· Research/Internship – must follow pre-approval guidelines from your major/minor department

· CURE courses – CURE stands for Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE). These are courses that incorporate research experience. You may find more information by going to. https://our.unc.edu/cure-courses/

· Apples Service Learning Courses – These will include 30-40 hrs. of community service as part of an approved course. You may also elect to satisfy this requirement by completing an Alternative Spring Break experience (please note: Fall and Winter breaks will not satisfy this requirement, since it is not long enough). · Fine Arts – These require substantial involvement for credit, such as curating an Art Exhibition, performing in a Junior or Senior recital or having a major role (on or off-stage) in a production.

In some cases, your major may have required or optional courses that fulfill EE – Required EE courses will be shown on the worksheet such as (PSYC 270) shown on the Psychology B.A. worksheet.

BA’s are liberal arts degrees that require another layer of Gen Eds courses to provide a wider range of experiences; we call these courses Supplemental Education (just as BS degrees have extra STEM).

Supplement Education requires a minimum of three 3 credit hour courses that are at or above 200. The three courses must meet the following criteria: It does not satisfy Foundations/Approaches. Neither can it be used in your major nor taught by your major department. It can be a course option that is used only in Connections.

Having a minor or a second major is considered sufficient diversification, this means that you do not have to complete the Supplemental Education requirement.

Here we would like to offer you some tips for narrowing down your search (and avoiding the 130-course cut off…)

· You could search by Gen Eds, CCOs or by Departments

· You could set a maximum (or minimum) course number

· There is also the option to open the additional course criteria box to find more options, including:

· Limit to lectures only (so recitations/ labs don’t clog up the search)

· Here it is also possible to search by units, days of the week or time of day.

Have you thought about your summer plans yet? Check out suggested options for the summer here. If you are thinking about attending summer school, now is the time to plan. Registration for summer school at UNC has begun. Don’t wait! Classes do fill up. So, load your shopping cart and register now. Academic Advisors are happy to assist you with your course selection if needed. Check the Registrars Calendar at registrar.unc.edu for the dates of each summer session.

Maybe you prefer to head home for the summer but still want to take classes? Online classes are available at UNC throughout the summer or you have the option of transferring courses back to UNC.

Before taking a class off campus at another institution this summer, you will need to apply as a visiting or non-degree seeking student at the school you would like attend and submit a Transfer Course Approval Form to Admissions at UNC to determine the course equivalent at UNC. You will need to allow enough time for your application to process, receive results from the Transfer Course Approval, and register for courses. Applications generally involve proof that you are an enrolled student in good standing at an accredited university. They will inform you of what proof is needed. In addition to seeking transfer course approval, you may find it helpful to consult the Transfer Equivalencies to note a historical record of courses previously approved. Because course descriptions could have changed, there is no guarantee, but it is a good place to start to give you a general idea of what may be approved. To be absolutely sure, however, submit the Transfer Course Approval Form to UNC Admissions and you should receive an email response within a few weeks with the exact course equivalent. Submitting this form does NOT obligate you to taking any specific course. You are simply asking how a course would come back to UNC if you decided to take it elsewhere. When the summer session concludes, remember to have your transcript sent directly to the UNC Office of Undergraduate Admissions to be applied to your record.

When it comes to taking courses at a 2-year school, note that if you have already completed 64 semester hours or more at UNC, you will not be able to transfer additional credit hours from a 2-year institution toward graduation, but the requirement would be considered complete. More detail about this policy can be found on the UNC Admissions website.

Before we close, we would like to leave you with a few registration tips:

1. Be sure to check the Registrars Calendar at registrar.unc.edu for important dates and deadlines.

2. Remember to load your shopping cart with lots of back-up course options; up to 30 courses. The more courses in your shopping cart the more prepared you will be for registration.

3. On the days leading up to your registration date, get in the habit of checking the holds on your account that may prevent you from registering a few times a day. This can be found on the right side of your Student Center screen in ConnectCarolina. It’s important to leave yourself enough time to resolve the hold before your registration date.

4. Plan to register for 15-17 hours so that you stay on track for graduation or have the flexibility to drop a class if necessary.

5. Remember that you can always SWAP for different courses between now and the first week of the semester.

6. The keys to a smooth registration experience is to Be Prepared, Be Patient, and Be Persistent.
