their math abilities and increase their math esteem.
Math Center’s Contest HCC Farmer’s Market Stand
Pignatare’s Farm has just opened
up a new stand at Holyoke Community College (HCC) in the
Student Lounge in the Donahue Building. Bob has been
sitting in his statistic class for 75 minutes; he starts to hear
his stomach growling. He remembered that he hadn’t eaten
breakfast. Bob hears about the Pignatare’s stand from his
classmate. He is going to give it a try, because he wants to
start eating healthy. Bob gets to the stand and buys his lunch
then notices that the amount he is paying for his lunch is a
rearrangement of digits of the amount of money he has in his
wallet - the money he has left over is also
another rearrangement of the same three digits
of the lunch that he paid for at the stand. How
much money did Bob start with?
Rules for the “HCC Farmer’s Market Stand” Contest:
You will need to show ALL your steps to the problem to
win the grand prize of a healthy fresh basket from the
Pignatare’s Farm Stand.
Drawing will take place at the Math
Center (DON 246) on April 26, 2019 @
1pm. (Participants are encouraged to
be there, but don’t have to be present to
win.)

Egg-Cellent
Jynelle is in fourth grade. This year, her classmates want to give back to the community.
With the help of their teachers, they are making 57 Easter egg baskets for an orphanage in
Springfield, MA. Each month they make 13 more baskets. Another elementary school in Holyoke,
MA got so interested in this project, they started putting together 71 baskets and 6 more each
month. In how many months will the two schools have the same number of Easter egg baskets?
Solution:
Let y = total number of Easter egg baskets
x = number of months to make those baskets.
Using y = mx + b:
y = 13x + 57 Equation 1
y = 6x + 71 Equation 2
Now let’s equate equations 1 and 2 by letting the y's be equal as they represent the number of
baskets.
13x + 57 = 6x + 71
Solving the linear equation gives;
7x = 14
Therefore,
x = 2 months
In conclusion, it will take 2 months for both schools to have the same number of baskets.
