While We Wait for God

They had to wait for it, and so do we. Advent is the consecration of waiting in our lives.

Human life is full of waiting people wait for trains, buses and planes; they stand in lines at

shops; they sit nervously in dentists’ waiting rooms; they wait in anguish for news of a lost

loved one. They wait for the slow process of healing to take its time; they wait for the birth

of a child. Waiting can be very different in these different situations, according to our

attitude. In an age of “instant” products any delay can be viewed as purely negative, for

“time is money.” Yet some things cannot be skimped or hurried; we have to let them take

the time they need. You can’t make the grass grow by pulling it, as the proverb wisely

warns.

[We often think] of faith as a breakthrough, the leap towards the invitation of the

Lover. But it is not like that all the time. In between those obviously creative moments,

faith can demand long, patient waiting, when nothing seems to be happening, and this is

just as necessary to growth. We sometimes have to go on doing the small, ordinary things,

while we wait for God, as May did while she waited for the birth of Jesus; we have to wait

for his moment, and wait for his work to ripen in ourselves. It may sometimes be more

fruitful in the end if we live with a lingering question, and grow slowly towards wisdom,

than if we find a quick answer partly dictated by our own desires. The waiting changes us,

schools us, teaches us to know God.

* * * * Holy Family Church presents its first annual Holiday Wreath Fundraiser. These memorial wreaths will be inside and outside the church. Holy Family Bereavement Group

You are invited to join a group that is meant to provide heal-ing for the mind, body and spirit. This group is for all of us who have lost someone or something important in our lives; whether through death or separation. Personal loss may apply to a person, a pet, a job, a house, or anything else that has been lost. We will get together to talk about the loss as well as to do help us process this experience. The bereave-ment group at Holy Family provides a safe and confidential environment for us to develop a supportive network and build coping skills to help us through challenges of grief and loss through our daily lives. The bereavement group will be conducted by Maureen Welsh. Each group will consist of 8-10 members. The group start potentially in March as the group roster is developed. Please call Mrs. Welsh at 718 709-6172 or the Rectory 718 257-4423 to sign-up. The bereave-ment facilitator will contact you in a timely manner.
