We look forward to welcoming many visitors to the Cathedral for worship during Holy Week and Easter 2019. Please come for all or part of the week’s powerful retelling of Christ’s passion, death and glorious resurrection.

This year, BBC Radio will broadcast two Easter Day services, meaning some inevitable restrictions as to when the Cathedral is open to the public. The Easter Garden this year will be located in the Education Garden, next to The Archbishop’s Palace.

PALM SUNDAY (14 APriL)

10.30am SUNG EUCHARIST WITH PROCESSION OF PALMS AND LITURGY OF PALM SUNDAY The Minster joins with the congregation of Our Lady of Victories (OLV) in re-enacting Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Meeting at OLV we walk in procession to the Minster to hear the Passion Gospel sung in dramatic form.

3.30pm EVENSONGSung by the Lay Clerks of the Cathedral Choir, Evensong includes Tallis’s stunning setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, leading us into Holy Week.

7pm HOLY WEEK EUCHARIST With extract readings from Dorothy L Sayers’ sequence of plays ‘The Man born to be King’.

7.30pm DIOCESAN CHRISM EUCHARISTThe Blessing of Holy Oils and Renewal of Ordination Vows with the Bishops. All are welcome to attend.

MAUNDY THUrSDAY (18 APriL)

7.00pm THE LITURGY OF MAUNDY THURSDAYStarting in celebratory mood we remember the Last Supper. The Gloria in Excelsis is sung for the first time since Ash Wednesday, and the last time before Easter Day. The symbolic foot washing re-enacts Jesus washing the feet of his disciples, commanding us to love one another. The service ends with the dramatic stripping of the altars and the Watch, waiting with Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. For those who wish to stay, the Vigil continues to 10pm.

GOOD FriDAY (19 APriL)

9.30am STATIONS OF THE CROSSThis interactive experience traces Jesus’s own journey to the Cross, and is appropriate for all ages.

10.30am THE LITURGY OF GOOD FRIDAYThis is at the heart of Holy Week. At the foot of the cross, music, readings, prayer and silence all contribute to this moving act of worship.

12.00noon THE THREE HOURS Re-membeRed by Love

Readings, and reflections with hymns, prayer and silence led by The Ven. John Reed. Please feel free to arrive and leave on the half hour if you cannot stay until 3pm.

EASTER EVE (20 April)5.30pm EVENSONG The mood of lament and desolation is captured by the music and readings before the joy and victory of the risen Christ bursts open the tomb on Easter Day. N.B. Doors will open at 5pm owing to a rehearsal in the Minster earlier in the afternoon.

EASTEr SUNDAY (21 APriL)

6.00am LIGHTING OF THE EASTER FIRE AND HOLY COMMUNION Due to the BBC broadcast all of this service will talk place outside the Minster, beginning in the north porch and moving to the Easter Garden.

8.10am SUNG EUCHARIST (broadcast live on BBC Radio 4)Please tune in to this service. Sung by the Cathedral Choir. Preacher: The Rt. Revd. Paul Williams, Bishop of Southwell and NottinghamN.B. If you wish to attend this service, please be seated by 7.45am, when the Minster doors will close.

10.30am SUNG EUCHARISTOur principal Eucharist for Easter Day. Preacher: Canon Nigel Coates, Canon Chancellor. All welcome. With Junior Church, followed by an Easter Egg hunt.
