The past 100 years have been something to be proud of at Holy Trinity High School!

Throughout the years, Holy Trinity‘s mission has continually provided thousands of youth of

all backgrounds and circumstances an excellent Catholic education in a nurturing

environment. September 8, 2010 marked 100 years to the day since Holy Trinity first

opened its doors in 1910. As we celebrate our rich tradition of success, we are also

preparing for our next century of service. To ensure that we are ready for the next 100 years

of our mission, Holy Trinity launched the Centennial Capital Campaign in March. This

ambitious effort will enhance all aspects of our school over the coming months and years.

Holy Trinity Today

Holy Trinity is transforming students' lives through excellence in education. Holy Trinity has a

proven approach to education and a record of success to support it:

For each of the last 5 years, 100% of our graduates have been accepted to college.

Our 11:1 student to faculty ratio is one of the best in the city.

Our innovative initiatives, such as the Friends for a Future Internship Program, provide

students unique opportunities to explore their interests and the world around them.

Our commitment to the Holy Cross values of Excellence, Integrity, Family, Discipline,

and Zeal provide the foundation for lives of meaning and service to others.

Holy Trinity enjoys a broad network of support, consisting of a dedicated Board, generous

donors, committed alumni, volunteers, and friends provide an increasing avenue of

support for our school and our students. With this strong foundation, we are very excited

about our bright future!

What’s Next for Holy Trinity?

The Centennial Capital Campaign is calling upon our entire school community to help lay the foundation for our next 100 years. With

increased financial support, Holy Trinity can have an even greater impact on a wide range of students. Holy Trinity will provide its students with

the best educational experience, building upon our established programs and empowering students to reach their full potential. To accomplish

this, we are focusing our fundraising efforts on three main areas, financial assistance and scholarships, academic enhancements, and capital

improvements with an overall campaign goal of $7.5 million. It has not

taken long for the Holy Trinity community of donors, board members, friends,

alumni, volunteers, faculty and staff to respond to this call, and within the past

nine months, we have already raised over $4.5 million! We are truly

inspired by the response of the Holy Trinity community, and we are keeping the

momentum going!

assistance and scholarships. A key goal of the Campaign is to expand upon our

current assistance programs so that we can serve more families and provide

My Friends for a Future Experience By Tania Neri ‗11

Friends for a Future, Holy Trinity‘s summer Internship program, teaches students all about how to secure a job in the corporate world and succeed once you get there.

The Friends for a Future journey starts when a student chooses to take the Corporate Experience class their junior or senior year. I took the class my junior year and I loved it. Mr. Brown, Mr. Grothaus, and all the other people involved with the Corporate Experience class did a great job at putting together lessons that taught us how to be prepared for our summer jobs. Class lessons included formal dining etiquette , resume writing, professional dress, interview skills, and networking skills.

One of most challenging parts of the class was the mock interview. Chicago business professionals came to our class room and interviewed each student as if it were a real job opportunity. With the teacher and the whole class watching, we had to interview for the job. The mock interviews were definitely a

great help, though I will admit I was terrified of getting up in front of the class to get interviewed. However, now when I look back, I realize it was worth ignoring my stage fright, because I was able to experience what a real interview would be like even before I left the classroom.

After going through the Corporate Experience class, I ended up working for Holy Trinity‘s Development Office, which I have really enjoyed. My job in the Development Office consisted of a wide variety of tasks and I was even able to serve as an interpreter because I am fluent in both Spanish and English. I really like it because the staff did everything they could to teach me something new and valuable everyday.

An important part of the Friends for a Future program is that each intern gets paired with a mentor. The role of the mentors is to give students advice and guidance through their first professional experience. My mentor, Sarah, is a Banking Associate for American Chartered Bank, Sarah is so happy to answer any of my questions that it makes it easy for me to contact her as often as I need to. When I see her, she is always eager to answer any questions I might have, even if they are not work-related. For example, given that she is a University of Illinois graduate, and that I am looking into U of I, we have been able to talk about some of my college plans, and she has offered to help with anything I need.

Choosing to take the Corporate Experience class was certainly one of the best decisions I have made! I am learning and discovering important information that I will definitely need in the future, for example, how to write a resume and how to follow up after an interview. Friends for a Future teaches things that most people do not learn until after they graduate from college and get a job. I am very proud and happy to be

part of the Friends for a Future program.

(Holy Trinity Turns 100, Sets Sights on the next 100, continued from pg. 1)

Holy Trinity has developed one of the most comprehensive

programs of student financial support in Chicago, with the basis of

support coming from individual donors, outside scholarship

agencies, and corporations and foundations. Without this network

of support, students like Charles (see Student Profile on the right )

would not be able to receive the excellent education they deserve.

For Charles and the rest of his classmates walking into the doors of

Holy Trinity is like walking into a sanctuary. Holy Trinity is not just a

place of scholarship, it is a second family! Although the world

outside our doors can be unstable, Holy Trinity fosters a culture of

safety, respect, and discipline. As a result, students want to be here

and they take advantage of the opportunities given to them.

With additional resources, Holy Trinity will be able to provide even

more students the opportunity to receive a superior, values-based

education, and we can do so by reaching our Centennial Capital

Campaign goals. For over 100 years, we have carried on the

tradition of helping Chicago‘s deserving youth achieve success.

With the help and support of our community, our current and future students will be able to achieve their dreams.

What’s Next for You

What Holy Trinity’s Students and Alumni are Planning

“I am looking forward to spending a

lot of time my senior year giving back

to the Holy Trinity community and

teaching the underclassmen how to do

the same.” - Jobari, Class of 2011

“I am looking forward to new challenges

to test my abilities. I want to build on my

relationships with my classmates and

teachers because I love Holy Trinity. The

people here really care for me and want

me to achieve something in life.”

- Daniel, Class of 2012

“I am loving everything about senior year.

I’m looking forward to college acceptance

letters and graduating, but not before I

make a lot more memories with my Holy

Trinity family.” - Valerie, Class of 2011

“I am now at DePaul University and

what’s next for me is completing my

dreams.” - Victoria Mora, Class of 2008

STUDENT PROFILE

A HOLY TRINITY EDUCATION MADE POSSIBLE…

Charles loves to cook, and he dreams of going to culinary school and becoming a chef. Thanks to our donors, who have helped support him and his family, his dream is on its way to becoming a reality. His story is an inspirational one, highlighting the importance of family, education, generosity, and hard work. Charles' mother worked long hours in order to support her family, pay the rent, and provide a Holy Trinity education for her oldest son, Mark. The bills were still too much. While Charles was in 8th grade, his mother had no other option but to move to Peoria leaving his father and older brother Mark behind.

Being uprooted and moving to a new community and a new school was extremely difficult for Charles, and his performance in school suffered. When it came time to selecting a high school he knew he wanted to go to Holy Trinity. Recognizing the importance of education, especially for an at-risk, teenage boy like Charles, Holy Trinity‘s network of support gave him the opportunity to attend school in the fall. Charles could not be more excited. ―I want to be with my big brother, where he can guide me," says Charles. He observes that "Holy Trinity offers more structure and programs than other schools.‖ Charles is also aware the he has an opportunity to improve at Holy Trinity, and this has renewed his drive to succeed. He said, ―I know I will get better grades than I used to. I have a scholarship, and I am not going to lose it.‖ CENTENNIAL CAPITAL

Our Newest Alumni

June 5th, 2010 was an emotional day for the Class

of 2010 as they gathered for Commencement at

St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. While they were sad

to say goodbye to the halls of Holy Trinity, the

members of the Class of 2010 have bright futures

ahead of them. Thanks to their profound

commitment to a future of success and hard work,

100% percent of the graduates were accepted into

college and university programs throughout the

country.

Holy Trinity is excited to announce the launch of

the Young Alumni Connection, a new effort

building on the Young Alumni Committee's work to

help renew, build, and maintain our Young

Alumni‘s connection with one another and the

larger Holy Trinity community.

Under the leadership of Young Alumni volunteers,

the Connection will:

Host social events in the city each month to

give alumni a chance to catch up with one

another

Provide alumni with opportunities to support

current HT students through rap sessions,

workshops, mentoring, and special events.

Encourage Young Alumni to give back what

they received as students. Holy Trinity students

have many needs and Young Alumni can help

to make their future bright.

Help alumni reconnect with one another and

share resources. Have an opportunity you

want to share? Let us know and we will acti-

vate the Holy Trinity network!

Ayobami Olugbemiga Class of 2007 A Summer Internship on Capital Hill

Coffee runs, making photocopies, and organizing files are typical daily business for interns in

corporate America. However, for Ayobami Olugbemiga, a 2007 Holy Trinity Alum, the day-to-day

activities are not so mundane. That is part of the territory when you are working for Congresswoman

Schakowsky.

Arriving to the office at 9 a.m. on Capitol Hill, he works closely with the communications director to

review the Wall Street Journal and summarize key issues including healthcare, the oil spill, and the

war in Afghanistan. According to Ayobami, ―working for Congresswoman Schkowsky has been very exciting. I get to see members of

Congress on a regular basis; I even speak with some of them every now and then." One of Ayobami's favorite jobs is attending the hear-

ings and briefings on Capitol Hill. ―I love American politics," he says, "and thought there was no better place to learn how politics works

than on Capitol Hill.‖ Ayobami applied for various summer internship programs last spring, with his top vote being Congresswoman

Schakowsky. He was accepted into her summer program and started work on June 7.

Ayobami is currently studying political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and works in in the housing department during the

school year as the Diversity Coordinator. He will graduate next summer from UW, and in the fall he hopes to attend George Washington

University to pursue his Masters in Political Management. His dream job is to be a congressman where he will focus his efforts on

―secondary education, especially when it comes to access and funding." He continues, "I am currently working on next year‘s issue brief

for Congresswoman Schakowsky regarding for-profit colleges; the benefits, problems and recommended improvements."

Ayobami first came to Holy Trinity as a transfer from Nigeria back in 2005. His father moved the family into the neighborhood-–directly

behind HT. With no idea where to send Ayobami to school, his father spoke with the apartment security guard who recommended the

high school next door! ―Holy Trinity welcomed me with open arms. The teachers held my hand throughout the process, indicating to me

what classes I should take and what areas I should focus on,‖ says Ayobami.

Recalling the most important influences from his Holy Trinity education, Ayobami describes his bond with Mr. Arreguin, an HT alumnus

from the Class of ‘85, Notre Dame Graduate, and HT teacher for 20 years, ―I call him my American dad, and he calls me his African

son!‖ Mr. Arreguin suggested Ayobami apply to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a school he previously had not considered.

―Honestly, I would not be where I am today without Holy Trinity, and to be more specific, I would not be studying at UW if it wasn‘t

for my math teacher, Mr. Arreguin.‖

In Loving Memory

Dr. Emanique (Matthews) Joe, a graduate of Holy Trinity in 1990, passed away on July 18th, 2010 in Ann Arbor Michigan after an

extended illness. Emanique is survived by her husband, Dr. Sean Joe, and her children, Edrick and Jordan.

Born in 1972 in Chicago, Emanique found a home away from home in Holy Trinity. She went on to receive

her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1995, her master‘s degree

in social work in 1997, and her doctoral degree in education in 2007 from Temple University.

Classmate Latrice Fitzpatrick-McGee ‘90 knew Emanique better than most, having gone to grammar school,

high school, and college with her. Latrice describes Emanique as ―the leveler – she leveled out all of our

classmates‘ different personalities. Her laid-back, funny personality and her beautiful spirit kept everyone

balanced.‖

When asked what Emanique would want for Holy Trinity‘s current students, Latrice does not hesitate,

―Emanique would love for them to all go to college, to not be intimidated about going to a big school away from home, to not be

afraid of pursuing a professional degree. We are two girls from the West Side of Chicago and we have been able to do so much.

Emanique would want them to know that the sky is the limit.‖

In celebration of Emanique‘s life and legacy, a scholarship has been created in her name at Holy Trinity. The scholarship will be

awarded to a deserving member of the Class of 2015. This student will carry on the legacy of his or her scholarship‘s namesake and

continue the tradition of academic success as he or she graduates on the 25th anniversary of Emanique‘s Holy Trinity graduation. To

support the scholarship fund, contact John Malloy in Holy Trinity's Development Office at [email protected] or at

773.278.4212, ext. 3040.
