Dear Friends Read: Psalm 17 v1-8
This is one of only four Psalms that is given the title ‘A Prayer.’ The Psalmist is in trouble and he turns to God in prayer. The prayer Psalm can be summarised in three words:
Verse 1 hear
Verse 5 hold
Verse 8 hide
And he who is heard, held and hidden by and in God need not fear even the fiercest foe.
In verses 1-5 the cry of help from the Psalmist is founded on a profession of innocence. The innocence stated is in regard to the occasion and situation of distress in which he now finds himself. It is not an arrogant assertion of innocence of all life! It is a parallel to the case of Job. Neither David nor Job claimed to be sinless, but each declared that the distress in which he then was, had not been occasioned by his sins. If you turn to verses 3, 4 and 5 we see that the Psalmist asks God to examine his heart, his mouth and his feet. That is his thoughts, his words and his deeds. He lays these before God to be examined by God, secure that he is innocent in this situation.
In verse 3 – even though he is pleading his innocence he still requests that God purifies his heart to find if his claim of innocence is true. He welcomes God’s refining fire process in his heart.
In verse 4 He states that he has followed the Word of God in his own speech and has not used his lips to gain earthly reward. He

has not had lying or flattering lips. When I read this verse it reminded me of Paul to young Timothy about the danger of telling people what they wish to hear and not the truth of God’s Word.
In verse 5 he states that he has walked faithfully in the ways of the Lord God. Walking in such a path may be difficult but his feet are secure on that path and he has not stumbled along it. There is confidence in his stride because he knows he is walking in the ways of the Lord God.
In verse 6-12 we have a vivid description of the Psalmist’s enemies. Yet if we look at verses 6-8 his first thought is not of foes arranged before him but of God. His first thought is God. In verse 6 he repeats the petition of verse 1, only this time he addresses it to God – denoting the power of the One to whom he is praying. He is confident that when he calls on God, God will answer. That is such a blessing in prayer. To know that God has inclined His ear towards our hearts and listened to our words and will answer. There is confidence and assurance here in David’s words. Borne, no doubt, out of past experience of answered prayer.
Verse 7 what a wonderful verse. He is in a difficult situation, surrounded by enemies and pursued by them. Yet his first petition is not for deliverance but for God’s loving kindness to be expressed towards him. David knew what it was to be chastised by God and he fears the judgement of God far more than the enemies around him. As Jonathon Edward’s once said ‘it is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of an angry God.’ He goes on in this prayer to refer to God as the one in whom he takes refuge from his enemies. God’s loving kindness is shown in salvation – hence David
Holy Trinity -‐ Woodburn 5
November 2013
addresses God as the Saviour. The right arm = might, power, prestige, honour and kingly authority.
Verse 8 – what a lovely verse to end on this morning. Such a simple petition and yet one whose depths we cannot fully understand. To be the apple of someone’s eye is to be their beloved – do you remember singing that as a child? ‘I am my beloveds and He is mine and His banner over me is love.’ David wants God’s loving gaze to be upon Him. He wants to be cherished, to be loved and to be favoured by God. Not only does he want God to look on him with favour He seeks God’s protection at this time. Christ used this image when He spoke of being like a mother hen gathering her chicks under her wings for protection. Think of that image – when you look all you see is the mother hen. You cannot see the chicks. To get at the chicks you have to go through the mother hen. When God hides us under the shadow of His wing our enemies see Him and to get at us they must go through Him. No wonder David is confident in this prayer. He is confident that hidden under the shadow of God’s wings he is safe, secure and protected. Verse 8 is a wonderfully powerful verse, full of imagery that we need to take down deep into our souls and allow to grow there.
May we have the confidence of David in prayer, confidence to turn to God who will answer and to seek His face in the face of our
enemies. And may we know that we are the apple of His eye and that we dwell under the shadow of His wings
Yours in Christ

Fields of Life
Over the past nine weeks we have had the honour and privilege to be associated with the Fields of Life Children’s Choir, from Uganda, during their tour of Ireland and GB. In that time we, along with many thousands who attended their concerts, have been ‘blown away’ by their sheer joy for life. Their smiles, their enthusiasm, their talents for singing and dancing, their appetites and their sense of fun have all played an enormous part in the pleasure of being with them. Their love for Jesus Christ, however, has been the most awe inspiring and humbling experience of this whole tour. This wasn’t just put on for the tour, this is how they are all of the time – a lesson for us all.
Thanks to everyone at Holy Trinity who supported the choir during such a memorable and rewarding experience. God is good.

Holy Trinity Bowls Fellowship INVITATION: A warm welcome awaits any member of Holy Trinity to join us every Thursday at 7.45pm. We give thanks to God that our numbers have increased. However it is still the case that a number of our current members also play for other bowls clubs in the town involved in league competitions. Many of these league games seem to fall on a Thursday evening which in turn can make our weekly attendance erratic. We would be delighted to see the majority of members of the Bowls Fellowship coming from our own congregation. Please accept this invitation to come along. You will be given tuition if you have never played before and we know that most of the people who try it find it very enjoyable and keep on playing. The invitation is open to anyone over the age of 18 years of age. Young people of secondary school age are also welcome provided they are accompanied by a parent or grandparent each time they attend. This regulation fulfills our requirement under "Safe Guarding Trust". If you want any other information please come and talk to me or any other member.

Uplift: On behalf of myself and the cast of 'Showtime' I would like to thank the Women's Group for coming up on Friday 18th October to support our show. Now that the show is over we will start working on the Christmas Show which will take place on the 14th December at Downshire school. Keep an eye out for more info in the future.
Weekly classes at Holy Trinity run from 10am to 6pm and includes an adult class. Uplift is not a church organisation is it is a separate business and makes donations to Holy Trinity for the use of the building. As Amy and I are both Christians we encourage our students to attend church no matter where that may be. A lot of our members don't even go to church and walking through the doors of Trinity on Saturdays may be there only experience of what it is like to be in a church. As a separate organisation we would like to state that we support the church and we are grateful that the church support us. Working with Trinity since 2009 has been a blessing and we love that we can affect the local community together.

8th Carrickfergus BB Company
October has been a busy month in the Boys’ Brigade. On Sunday 6th October we joined other member of the East Antrim Battalion for the Annual Church Parade in Larne. We were blessed with glorious weather. The parade was the largest for many years with 600 Boys’ Brigade Officers and Boys on parade. Also at the Parade 8th Carrickfergus were presented with the McCune Cup again. This cup is only awarded to companies within the Carrickfergus Borough area; if you look at the cup in our trophy cabinet you will see we are ‘regular’ winners!
Please also take a look at the new pendant displayed in the cabinet. Each Company within our Battalion was presented with this as a token to mark the 125th Anniversary of Boys’ Brigade in Northern Ireland.
Our 22nd Annual Enrolment Service took place on Sunday 20th October.
Thank you to Marjory Edgar and Helen Wootton who’s fingers having been busy working magic making poppies. The funds raised from the sale of the poppies will be divided between the Royal British Legion and 8th Carrickfergus. We have a group of Senior Boys travelling to London to take part in the Remembrance Parade at the Cenotaph.

So as you can see we have been busy and I would ask you to keep all the officers and boys in prayer as we continue with our busy and varied programme.
