Laurel Hall, at the time the only public meeting hall in San Carlos, was located over a bar across from the firehouse on Laurel Street. On this fifth Sunday in Easter (and Mother's Day), Pastor Beilstein wrote in the bulletin: "With this service Holy Trinity Lutheran Church begins its work in the City of San Carlos. We do so in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost. It is our high aim ever to proclaim nothing, but the “Good Word” - the Gospel of a Savior slain for the sins of man that through Him we might have eternal life. May the Lord keep us faithful in this joyous task.” Holy Trinity shared its anniversary year (and use of Laurel Hall) with Epiphany Episcopal Church. By all accounts, Laurel Hall wasn’t just over a bar, but also served as one itself. A lot of mornings, the men had to go to the Hall early and clean up the beer cans before services.” Pastor Beilstein remembered that his services were interrupted not only when the bar downstairs threw out its empties, but it seemed every time he started to preach, the alarm at the fire station summoned the volunteer firemen.

In observance of Labor Day, the office is closed Monday, September 7th.

Holy Trinity is moving from one chapter in its life into another.

As we move into the next chapter at Holy Trinity it’s an opportunity to reflect on our rich beginnings.

On Sunday, May 11, 1947, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church held its first service in Laurel Hall. Laurel Hall, at the time the only public meeting hall in San Carlos, was located over a bar across from the firehouse on Laurel Street. On this fifth Sunday in Easter (and Mother's Day), Pastor Beilstein wrote in the bulletin:

"With this service Holy Trinity Lutheran Church begins its work in the City of San Carlos. We do so in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost. It is our high aim ever to proclaim nothing, but the “Good Word” - the Gospel of a Savior slain for the sins of man that through Him we might have eternal life. May the Lord keep us faithful in this joyous task.”

Holy Trinity shared its anniversary year (and use of Laurel Hall) with Epiphany Episcopal Church. By all accounts, Laurel Hall wasn’t just over a bar, but also served as one itself. “A lot of mornings, the men had to go to the Hall early and clean up the beer cans

before services.” Pastor Beilstein remembered that his services were interrupted not only when the bar downstairs threw out its empties, but it seemed every time he started to preach, the alarm at the fire station summoned the volunteer firemen.

“This is a faith venture. Otherwise we would not dare consider building in these days of high costs.

Especially since we are but a one year-old mission.”

The parsonage was dedicated on September 25, 1949. The mortgage for the $35,000 debt for the two

buildings was paid off and burned 10 years later.

65 years later, as a result of the Spring Forth! campaign, Beilstein Hall and the parsonage received a “face lift”. Additionally, new landscaping greatly enhanced the long neglected Glenwood side of the church property.

In its almost 70 year history, Holy Trinity has been served by six full time pastors:

Pr. Emmett Beilstein 1947-66 Pr. Ken Zabel   1966-84

Pr. Don Fisher 1986-90 Pr. Kim Eifert Krogstad 1991-2003

Pr. Dan Smith 2005-2010

Pr. Christian Jennert 2011-15

Each has added a richness to our faith lives!

April 1948 was a busy month: the church site was purchased, an architect was hired, Pastor Beilstein was installed and Holy Trinity was received into membership of the CA District of the American Lutheran Church. On August 7, 1949, the Parish Hall was dedicated and served as Holy Trinity’s sanctuary until 1963.

Thank You to everyone who supported our HTLC Relay for Life Team! Our team had over 50 Luminaria bags lighting the Carlmont HS track on Saturday, July 18. We got pictures of all the Luminaria bags, so if you'd like a digital copy sent to you to pass on, contact Mary Webb ([email protected]). Co-captain John Schornstein did a great job with our logistics, setting up our booth & tents...& making sure they didn't blow away! He helped man the booth during the day, then came back Sunday morning to break everything down. Lillian Pogreba & Chris Kidwell joined me for the Survivor Lap. Thanks to Karen Schornstein & Eloiza Meier for helping in the booth & to Chris Kidwell for being a trooper & staying all day through the Luminaria Ceremony, even though she was recovering from a lengthy flu. Last, but not least, thanks to my wonderful teammate Brita Segerhammar who was a walking machine - & my tent mate through the night. Walking on & off until 10 am Sunday, Brita logged well over 60,000 steps during the Relay. ~ Mary Webb

Intentional Interim? What’s that?

Trained ministers from the Intentional Interim Ministry program are equipped with skills to help a congregation understand what it takes to get ready for a new pastor. As an unbiased outsider with insight into the issues and concerns a congregation may face, the intentional interim minister has the ability to be a step removed and view the situation with neutrality and perspective. These ministers come to the congregation knowing they are temporary shepherds and not eligible to become the settled pastor. Their purpose – to bring the congregation to the best outcome – is well defined from the outset.

In addition, churches get the support necessary during the interim period to sustain the church and maintain its ministries.Congregations receive:

• Pastoral care and administrative leadership as determined by the congregation and the intentional interim pastor. This includes helping with staff and volunteer transitions.

• A pastor trained to deal with conflicts, help heal divisions, and assist in changing attitudes and expectations. Intentional interim ministers are trained in change management and conflict resolution.

• The security of a steady pastoral ministry while internal changes and decisions are being made. • Alternative views to ministry and parish life. An intentional interim minister can expose the congregation to

alternate models of ministry that can bring an exciting new dimension to the church. • Transition team leadership to assist with the steps the congregation needs to take. This may include helping

articulate the values, vision and mission of the church. Intentional Interim Ministers are not involved directly in the call process.

News from the HTLC Call Committee — Submitted by Greg Bohlmann, Call Committee Chair

The committee guiding our transition to a new pastor, known as the “Call Committee”, has been approved by the Council to include the following eight members: Greg Bohlmann (chair), Barbara Padilla, Lisa Antonino, Mary Webb, Gaby Knauth, Anna Friedman, Bobby Rodgers and Doug Southard. The committee is meant to represent the various groups in Holy Trinity including age and gender balance, new and longer time members, and a youth member.

The call process will be a time of discernment for Holy Trinity and the Call Committee. The Call Committee will be asking itself and the congregation searching questions about mission, ministry and theology. After meeting with a representative of the Bishop’s office, the committee will develop a ministry site profile for Holy Trinity. Upon completion of the congregational profile, the Bishop’s office will review it and submit the names of 3-5 candidates to the Call Committee for interview. During this time of discernment over the coming months, please keep the Call Committee and Holy Trinity in your prayers.

Interim Call Update

Greetings! The Interim Call Committee is making great progress and would like to give you an update. The Committee, made up of Barbara Richards, Bob Beuthel, and Gary Wiessinger, first put together a profile of what we’re looking for in an interim pastor. One of the key elements we identified is someone trained and experienced in Intentional Interim Ministry (see separate article).

The Synod has given us a candidate, who we interviewed on July 16. The interview went extremely well, and all three of us were very impressed by the candidate and excited by the possibility of him/her joining us. The candidate is trained in Intentional Interim Ministry and has excellent experience as interim with six different congregations. She/he is very personable and has a strength of faith that is apparent and contagious.

For our next steps, we will observe the candidate in one or two services at the church where the candidate is currently the interim pastor and will also complete reference checks with several churches that the candidate served at in the past.

We will keep you updated on our progress. Please let any of us know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Barbara, Bob, & Gary

As part of the Glenwood landscaping, two new signs have been installed by SignWorks, a San Carlos sign company. These photos show the process from installing the template to drill holes, to installing the letters/sign.

The photo on the left shows work at the parking lot entrance by Webb Builders in preparation for the new permanent sign. Design for that sign is currently being reviewed by the City of San Carlos. Once approved, the sign will be installed and the area will be finished and landscaped.

July Council Meeting:

• The July Council meeting was a Special meeting with Rev. Nancy Nelson, Bishop’s Associate, and the Interim and Call Committees

• Nancy reviewed the call process and guidelines with an opportunity for Council and committee members to ask questions
