Luke 2:19 . . . if riches increase, do not set your heart on them. Psalm 62:10c The Sunday School teacher told her fifth-grade class: “The gospel tells us the love of money is the root of all evil.” One fine young student responded: “Well, it’s not that I love money, I just love the things money can buy.” Don’t we all! What we love says a lot about who we are. So you could say that our financial statements revealat least in partwhat or who we love. How we spend our money (or our time and abilities) can give us a clue to discovering our true priorities, our true values and our true delights. When Jesus says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” he’s asking us if we know what is in our heart and if there is any “heart” in what we treasure. Saint Lawrence was one of seven deacons of the congregation in Rome and, like the deacons appointed in the book of Acts, was responsible for financial matters in the church as well as for the care of the poor. Lawrence lived during a time of persecution under the emperor Valerian. The emperor sent soldiers to Saint Lawrence to demand that he surrender the treasures of the church. Over three days, Lawrence took the silver and gold of the church and distributed them among all the Christians in Rome. Then Lawrence gathered lepers, orphans, the blind and lame. He brought them to the emperor and said, “Here is the treasure of the church.” The emperor was so enraged that he sentenced Lawrence to death. While we can surmise that Lawrence treasured the poor and the Christians in Rome, we know for certain that the Emperor did not. The things and people we value are that which we are willing to pay any price to attain and maintain. There was much heart in Lawrence’s treasure but no heart in the treasury of the Emperor. So I ask myself, is there a heart in my treasure? What is my heart treasuring? The witness of Saint Lawrence and Mary challenge and inspire me to take assessment of what and who I treasure and how I can better invest my time, my talents, and my treasure to reflect things and people of true value, to reflect what Christ loves and values. There is a piece of wisdom from George Sand that I find helpful to contemplate in the midst of reflecting on what is of value: “Guard within yourself that treasure, kindness. Know how to give without hesitation, how to lose without regret, how to acqui re without meanness.” Kindness, generosity, joy, and humilityall are gifts of the Spirit. There is much heart in these to be treasured! I hope you will join me in valuing them and investing in them in our life together.

Is There a Heart in Your Treasure? But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. Luke 2:19 . . . if riches increase, do not set your heart on them. THE TIDINGS

The Sundays of 2015

Pentecost 19, October 4 Giving Thanks With a Grateful Heart—The Gift of Companionship No one questions the gift and importance of community but today’s readings from Genesis and Mark lift up the importance of the more intimate gift of friendship and companionship. Pentecost 20, October 11* Giving Thanks With a Grateful Heart—The Gift of Giving *2nd Sunday Family Communion Service at 9:15 AM Many of us remember the famous line in the movie Wall Street by character Gordon Gekko, “Greed . . . is good. Greed is right, greed works.” Out of love and not as judgment, Jesus has a conversation with a rich young man that offers him an open door to life—sell all you own and give it to the poor. Our culture bombards us with the message that we will find life by consuming. Through us, Jesus offers an invitation to find life by divesting for the sake of the other. Pentecost 21, October 18 Giving Thanks With a Grateful Heart—The Gift of Serving Today’s gospel starts with the disciples obsessing over who’s number one, which leads Jesus to say something about God’s take on importance and power. Here Jesus makes it explicit that the reversal of values in God’s community is a direct challenge to the values of the dominant culture, where wielding power over others is what makes you great. When we pray “your kingdom come” we are praying for an end to tyranny and oppression. We pray this gathered around the cross, a sign of great shame transformed to be the sign of great honor and service. REFORMATION SUNDAY, October 25—Commitment Sunday Giving Thanks With a Grateful Heart—Freely, Because of God’s Giving Us His Son The Rev. Aaron Richter, Assistant to the Bishop, Guest Preacher On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ—the good news—that makes us free! We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In Christ, God’s grace makes us free to be children of God. With joy and thanksgiving we offer what God has first given us—our selves, our time, and our possessions—signs of God’s gracious love.

THE TIDINGS

The Sundays of

2015

ALL SAINTS DAY, November 1—Remembrance of All Saints Rite of Confirmation of Steven Kelly Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. The feast of All Saints celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who are the body of Christ. The saints are those who know something about God and point away from themselves and towards the One who is all in all for them, namely God. In holy baptism God makes saints out of sinners. This feast day is especially appropriate for publicly affirming baptism in the rite of Confirmation. Pentecost 24, November 8* The Lord raises up the poor from the dust, to make them inherit a seat of honor. *2nd Sunday Family Communion Service at 9:15 AM Widows are visible everywhere in today’s readings. Jesus denounces those scribes who pray impressive prayers but devour widows’ houses. He commends the poor widow who in his view gave far more than the major donors. Jesus doesn’t see her simply as an object of compassion or charity. She, like the widow of Zarephath who shares her last bit of food with Elijah, does something of great importance. Pentecost 25, November 15 Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to stand before the Son of Man. November begins with All Saints Day and ends in or near Advent, when we anticipate Christ’s coming again. Jesus’ disciples ask for a sign of the “end times”;; Jesus redirects them to focus inward on faith. Some people look for indications of the future in weather, political, climate and economic forecasts. Yet, Jesus encourages his disciples to stay focused on the good news rather than being led astray by anxiety and persecution, encouraging them to provoke one another to love and good deeds. The Reign of Christ Sunday, November 22 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Even after Israel had experienced the vagaries of kings, they still longed for a true king to set things right. He would have the king’s title of Anointed One (Messiah);; he would be the “one like a human being” (Son of Man) given dominion in Daniel’s vision. Jesus is given these titles, even though he is nothing like an earthly king. His authority comes from the truth to which he bears witness, and those who recognize the truth voluntarily listen to him. We look forward to the day he is given dominion, knowing his victory will be the nonviolent victory of love. ADVENT I, November 29 Hark, the Glad Sound! Advent is about the “coming day.” God’s people have always lived in great expectation, but that expectation finds specific, repeated enunciation throughout the four weeks of Advent.

Blessing of the Animals and Commemoration of St. Francis Sunday, October 4 Noon—Front Lawn Burton Avenue

BRING YOUR PETS! St. Francis of Assisi is remembered not only as a friend of animals, but primarily as a renewer of the church, urging the church to be faithful to the Gospel. Francis, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant, renounced his wealth and future inheritance and devoted himself to the poor. He said that all followers of Christ had the task to preach the Gospel and to “use words if necessary.”

In commemoration of St. Francis, please join us on Sunday, October 4, on the front lawn at noon and bring your pets for a brief, but maybe raucous, special Blessing of the Animals Service.

Romans: The Letter That Changed the World A Seven-Week Bible Study Begins on October 8 at 7 - 8:30 PM Concludes on November 19 Brilliant. Counter-cultural. History-shaping. With blazing clarity, Paul's letter to the early churches in Rome revealed both the transforming light of the gospel and the darkness of the surrounding world. Discover just how radical a message Paul's letter to the Romans really was and why it has inspired both hope and conflict through the centuries and why today it continues to challenge our culture and change hearts and lives. Discover why this letter launched the Reformation in 1517 when Luther “saw the whole of scripture in a different light and it opened for him “the very gate of paradise.”

All are welcome! Join the conversation on Thursday evenings at 7 PM. For more information, contact Pastor Susan by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 201-288-6889.

FROM THE PORCH . . .

TO THOSE IN NEED

Thanks to everyone's continued generosity, WELCA and SWIM have been able to send 26 backpacks filled with school supplies to Lutheran Social Ministries for the children in their foster care and other programs.

Holy Trinity’s next From the Porch project will be a Christmas gift collection for the residents of the Veteran’s Home in Paramus. Many of these men and women have no families to bring them gifts or even the things they need for everyday living. These people generously put their lives on the line for us in their younger years and must not be forgotten now when they are most in need.

Items being collected should be new. We are requesting bed jackets for women, men’s pajamas (sizes M-4X), crew style socks without elastic tops, baseball caps and sweatshirts or sweatpants in all sizes for men or women. Our Prayer Shawl Ministry will be working on shawls and lap robes for the veterans and will welcome them from members of the community as well. Finally, if you have medium/large Christmas gift bags to spare, these will also be appreciated.

We will be collecting during the months of September, October, and November. Items may be left on the Porch of the church or in the bin provided in the lobby. If you have any questions, please call the church office at 201-288-6889.

Thank you, as always, for helping to make our ministries to those in need possible and sharing in . . .

HELP A CHILD EXPERIENCE THE JOYS OF CHRISTMAS — FILL A GIFT BOX

WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) will be participating in Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child, aka "The Shoe Box Project," again this year. During the months of September and October, we will be collecting items to fill shoe boxes for children all around the world. You may pick up a decorated shoe box at Holy Trinity or you may choose to use and decorate your own shoe box (please wrap the top and bottom separately so it can be easily opened). Boxes should be filled with any of the suggested items listed in the brochure found either in the box or on the table in the lobby; or, simply just donate any of the appropriate items and let WELCA do the rest. If you decide to fill a box, please be sure to indicate whether the box is for a BOY or a GIRL and the age category, 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14 years of age, using the available labels. All boxes and/or items must be turned in by November 1.

Note: In just the last five years, more than 1.1 million children have prayed to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior through Operation Christmas Child’s follow-up discipleship program, The Greatest Journey. So, be creative, think outside the box — put the items in a shoe box or give them to WELCA and make a child smile!

“Your gift of love may be the door God uses to open a child’s heart to Jesus . . .”

We Did It! The ELCA Malaria Campaign has reached its $15 million goal! Ashley Debilzen

(reprinted from The ELCA Malaria Campaign Blog)

Friends, we did it! The ELCA Malaria Campaign has exceeded its fundraising goal of $15 million dollars! That means 15 million reasons to say THANK YOU. Your generosity and dedica on made this moment possible. As a result of your support, malaria programs in 13 African countries have been fully funded. Together we have had great success – millions of community members were educated about the disease, nearly 10,000 local volunteers were trained on disease preven on and treatment methods, 50,000 nets were distributed, 32,000 pregnant women received preven on medica on and more.

Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton also thanks you for your hard work: "We began the Malaria Campaign in the depths of the Great Recession and at a me of considerable turmoil in this church. The goal of raising $15 million might have sounded improbable at the me, but our people responded generously. We are honored to accompany our global companions in the Lutheran churches in Africa in their work to make malaria history." Although the campaign's financial goal has been met, the ELCA will con nue its an -malaria work post 2015 through ELCA World Hunger.

Please share this wonderful news with your synods, congrega ons and Facebook friends—we want everyone to know that ELCA members have stepped up in faith to make a difference and to end deaths from this preventable and treatable disease.

A Few Frequently Asked Ques ons What happens now that we have raised more than $15 million? We celebrate Lutheran generosity! As addi onal gi s come in designated for malaria, they will be spent to expand exis ng malaria programs or allow companions in other countries to get involved.

Can I s ll give to the ELCA Malaria Campaign? Yes. Fundraising efforts will con nue un l the end of the fiscal year (Jan. 31, 2016). But now that we have reached our fundraising goal, we encourage you to send gi s to ELCA World Hunger. If you would like to specifically support malaria work, you can indicate "malaria" on your check's memo line. Gi s can be sent to: Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Gi Processing Center, P.O. Box 1809, Merri-‐field, VA 22116-8009. Or you can give online at www.ELCA.org/malaria/donate.

What happens to malaria programming? Though our fundraising campaign efforts for malaria have ended, our commitment to walking together with our companions and sup-‐por ng their health-care ministries will not end. Our global companion churches and Lutheran partners who would like to con nue or begin new malaria programming in the coming years will seek funding through ELCA World Hunger, which has a history of suppor ng health-related programming.

Good News!

THE TIDINGS

During the Middle Ages, few people other than monks and priests knew how to read and write. But, with the Renaissance (a time in history when people took a new interest in learning about science and art), more and more people became educated and learned how to read. At the same time, the printing press was invented allowing for new ideas, as well as scriptures of the Bible, to be easily printed and distributed. People were able to read the Bible for themselves for the first time.

As Martin Luther studied the Bible, he began to question the practices of the Catholic Church. He found many areas where he felt the Bible and the Catholic Church disagreed. On October 31, 1517, Luther took a list of 95 points where he thought the Church had gone wrong and he nailed it to the door of a Catholic Church.

One of the practices that Luther disagreed with was the paying of indulgences. This practice allowed people to be forgiven of their sins when they paid the church money. After Luther nailed his list to the Church, the Catholics began to make less money. This made them mad. They kicked him out of the church and called him a heretic (someone who goes against the teachings of the church). This may not sound bad today, but in those times heretics were often put to death.

Many people agreed with Martin Luther that the Catholic Church had become corrupt. Much of northern Europe began to separate from the Catholic Church and the Lutheran Church was started.

Reformation Sunday is a day that we celebrate all the teachings of Martin Luther. This year, Reformation Sunday will be celebrated in our church on October 25. Our bell choir, the Joyful Noise Ringers, will play a special song on the bells to help us celebrate.

THE TIDINGS Because it had too many problems!

Q: Why was the math book so sad?

A:

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.

Psalm 100:4 (NIV)

Word Search puzzles are fun. The title of the puzzle on the right is “Thanksgiving Top 10 List.” We have so much for which to be thankful! You may want to write your own list. Your top ten list might be different from the one this person wrote. . .

10. My house – many people in this world have no place to live. Many sleep on park benches and under bridges.

9. Food - we have plenty to eat at our house. Many people don’t.

8. Clothes – Many people only have the clothes that they are wearing.

7. Health – I am blessed with good health. Some people have serious illnesses which keeps them from enjoying a full and happy life.

6. My country – I live in a country where I enjoy great freedom. There are countries where you don’t have much freedom. In some, you can be put in prison for telling others about Jesus.

5. Teachers – I am thankful for the teachers that I have in school and in church who teach me the things I need to know to live a happy and successful life.

4. Friends – In times of trouble, I have always had friends who were there to help me.

3. Family – God has given me a wonderful family whom I love very much.

2. Parents – I am thankful that God blessed me with wonderful parents who love me, care for me, and teach me about Jesus and his love.

1. Jesus – Jesus is number one on the list. No one ever loves me like Jesus. He loves me so much that he was willing to die on a cross so that I can have everlasting life. Thank you, Jesus.

What would you add to your list?

We have been given so much. The Bible says that God blesses us and gives us much so that we may show our thanks by sharing it with others. We hope that this Thanksgiving, we’ll all share what God has given us with those who do not have as much as we do. At Holy Trinity, we celebrate Thanksgiving by going to church on the evening before Thanksgiving Day, Wednesday, November 25. Pastor will bless the food items you bring with you to share with others.

Remember to pray every day: Dear Lord, thank you for all of your rich blessings. Help us to share what you have given us with those who are less fortunate than we are. Amen.

THE TIDINGS

The worship service on Rally Day Sunday, September 13, began with a Welcome Back Litany of Thanksgiving for the Youth Gathering 2015 Team and concluded with a Farewell and Godspeed to Pastor and Mrs. Dreyman. The message of the YG 2015 Team's presentation was "Jesus is Good News!" The Team presented it first to the congregation during the gathering litany, Kathi Kelly shared it during the children's message and continued to lead the chant that "Jesus is Good News" during their presentation accompanied by photos of their time in Detroit. During the Farewell and Godspeed for Pastor and Mrs. Dreyman, there was an exchange of gifts: WELCA presented them with a quilt, the congregation presented them with a plate handmade by Dianna Mammone, a Russian icon of the Holy Trinity, the "Beekeeper's Bible" and journal, and a gift of over $1,700. Pastor and Mrs. Dreyman also presented a gift of $1,000 to the congregation for the purchase of new green paraments. Immediately following the service, everyone enjoyed delicious grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and homemade side dishes and desserts. The children enjoyed the petting zoo and pony rides, too.

READERS

The Readers group at Holy Trinity met in September to discuss the book, Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. It was a great book set during WWII dealing with the Japanese Internment camps and immigrant life. We enjoyed a lively discussion while dining on take-out Chinese food. The discussion covered the topic of identity, heritage and our modern day immigration struggles.

We’ve agreed to meet on Friday, October 23, when we will discuss our newest book selection, Perfect Match by Jodie Piccoult. In its description, Amazon poses the following questions: “What does it mean to be a good mother?” and “How far would you go in the name of love and justice?” — “In the course of her everyday work, career-driven assistant district attorney Nina Frost prosecutes child molesters and works determinedly to ensure that a legal system with too many loopholes keeps these criminals behind bars. But when her own five-year-old son, Nathaniel, is traumatized by a sexual assault, Nina and her husband, Caleb, a quiet and methodical stone mason, are shattered, ripped apart by an enraging sense of helplessness in the face of a futile justice system that Nina knows all too well. In a heartbeat, Nina's absolute truths and convictions are turned upside down, and she hurtles toward a plan to exact her own justice for her son — no matter the consequence, whatever the cost.”

We will stay in at Holy Trinity for refreshments and discussion. Feel free to join us. Watch for more details in the weekly Tidings or call Dianna Mammone at 201-546-0426 or Rita Krieger at 201-288-9256.

COUNCIL O R N E R

September 8

Plans are being made for a monthly prayer service, to be held on the first Tuesday of the month from October to May.

Pastor will be a representative at a national ELCA meeting regarding the 2015

Youth Gathering. Sunday School will continue to use the Holy

Moly curriculum. Plate and current collections for August were

below budget projections. Average Sunday attendance for July 2015 was

41 compared to 52 in 2014 and, for August of 2015, it was 39 compared to 46 in 2014.

The bell choir will be planning a performance for residents at Wellington Hall.

The next Council meeting will take place on October 12 at 7:15 PM.

To all who helped in the planning and preparations and clean up for Rally Sunday to make it a great day and to all who contributed side dishes and desserts for us to enjoy.

To Arnie Ulrich for the use of his tent which allowed us to enjoy our picnic lunch outdoors.

To all the men who helped set up the tent, tables and chairs with Dottie Heflich and Debbie Stelzle.

To John Heflich, Charlie Niestempski and Al Vereeken for serving as our grill masters on Rally Sunday.

To Kathi Kelly who delivered the children’s message, Jesus is Good News, on Rally Sunday.

To Michael Fiore for sharing his talent with us and enhancing our worship by playing the trumpet on two Sundays this summer.

To all of our Town Day volunteers who took time from their busy schedules to man our table in Woodland Park and tell others about Holy Trinity.

To our knitters and crocheters for making 100 hearts with a message of God’s Peace to share with others on Town Day.
