GATHERING

Welcome and Announcements

Prelude “Built On The Rock” - setting by Don McAfee

*The Confession & Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, (+) one God, who forgives all our sin whose mercy endures forever.

Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love

you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves

into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us

our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us

again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life

through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with

Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of (+) Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven.

Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts

through faith. Amen.

*The Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with

you all.

And also with you.

*The Kyrie (spoken)

In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For the peace from above, and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.

Lord have mercy.

For the peace of the whole world, for the wellbeing of the church of God, and for unity of all, let us

pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord have mercy.

Help save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

Amen.

*The Prayer of the Day

O God, with all Your faithful followers of every age, we praise You, the rock of our life. Be our

strong foundation and form us into the body of Your Son, that we may gladly minister to all the world,

through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen

The First Lesson Isaiah 51: 1-6

Listen to me, you that pursue righteousness,

you that seek the LORD.

Look to the rock from which you were hewn,

and to the quarry from which you were dug. 2 Look to Abraham your father

and to Sarah who bore you;

for he was but one when I called him,

but I blessed him and made him many. 3 For the LORD will comfort Zion;

he will comfort all her waste places,

and will make her wilderness like Eden,

her desert like the garden of the LORD;

joy and gladness will be found in her,

thanksgiving and the voice of song.

4 Listen to me, my people,

and give heed to me, my nation;

for a teaching will go out from me,

and my justice for a light to the peoples. 5 I will bring near my deliverance swiftly,

my salvation has gone out

and my arms will rule the peoples;

the coastlands wait for me,

and for my arm they hope. 6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens,

and look at the earth beneath;

for the heavens will vanish like smoke,

the earth will wear out like a garment,

and those who live on it will die like gnats;

but my salvation will be forever,

and my deliverance will never be ended.

Psalm 138

The Second Lesson Romans 12:1-8

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a

living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to

this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will

of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.

3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than

you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God

has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same

function, 5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of

another. 6 We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; 7 ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; 8 the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in

generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

*The Gospel Acclamation (spoken in unison)

Alleluia. You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Alleluia. (Matthew 16:16)

The Holy Gospel Matthew 16:13-20

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people

say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still

others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon

Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him,

“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father

in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of

Hades will not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever

you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

He ascended into heaven

He is seated at the right hand of the Father

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers of Intercession

With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of

God’s creation.

The Minister concludes each petition with “Lord In Your Mercy,” and the response is, “Hear our

Prayer.”

The Lord’s Prayer

L. Lord, remember us in your Kingdom and teach us to pray:

C. Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is

in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

SENDING

*The Blessing

Almighty God, Father, + Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen.

(Silence is observed for meditation as candles are extinguished.)

The Dismissal

Minister: Go in peace, serve the Lord.

Response: Thanks be to God!

As these weeks drag on and on of not being able to attend worship for some of us, if you and/or your

family is interested in meeting Pastor Fischer in the church sanctuary to receive private Holy

Communion, simply contact him to set up an appointment.

The Church Council met recently via Zoom and decided that the sanctuary CAN now be used for

funeral/memorial services during this time of COVID-19, for the immediate family only.

Please note, during this coronavirus time, WELCA will not be preparing or serving bereavement

meals for the family.

During this COVID-19 time, there will be no Combined Worship Services on our 5th Sundays.

REMINDER!!!! BUILDING ENTRY Each church building (Fellowship Hall, Office, and Sanctuary) has access via an electronic keypad

with a code that has been given to each church member; if you need be reminded of the code, please

contact the church office or Pastor Fischer. As a reminder this code is not to be shared outside of

church family. The new church key will also give you access to all buildings as well. As for the florists who deliver altar flowers on Saturday, they have been given a code of their own to

use.

RETURN TO SANCTUARY WORSHIP

The Church Council has decided to open the sanctuary to in-person worship beginning Sunday,

September 6! We will be using all the safety measures we are currently using for COVID-19 at

worship at Fellowship Hall. More details to follow.

Also, we will be returning to celebrating Holy Communion twice a month, beginning in September,

on the first and third Sunday of each month. Communion will be distributed in a similar manner we

are currently using in Fellowship Hall. We will not be gathering at the altar rail to eliminate the

touching of surfaces in kneeling.

Worship Guidelines

To help facilitate social distancing, chairs in Fellowship Hall are set up in 19 clusters, 7 feet

apart, to accommodate a total of 50 worshipers.

To minimize possible exposure to the virus, worship services will be shorter than what we are

accustomed to.

Surfaces will be cleaned between the worship services.

In the place of hymnals, we will be using bulletins with a printed worship service.

Several recent studies have found that forceful, sustained breathing, such as during singing,

appears to pose a greater danger of spreading the coronavirus. To minimize these dangers, the

singing of hymns, the Kyrie, and the Psalms, will be omitted. In addition to a prelude, we will

be using a soloist for a hymn and speak the remaining parts of the liturgy.

We will be refraining from handshaking and hugging.

No nursery or Sunday School will be offered at this time.

Offering plates will not be passed during the worship service but instead, be placed at the

entrance.

You are asked to enter using the door from the back parking lot (not the door off Oakland

Street). Entering and exiting, the door will be either propped open or someone will open the

door for you so that you will not have to touch the door handle.

For the protection of others, the wearing of masks is strongly encouraged during worship. You

are encouraged to bring your own mask, however, masks will also be available at the door.

We will continue to record one of the worship services every Sunday morning and post these on

the internet, as we have been doing.

A word of caution: We cannot provide a 100% sterile and sanitized environment at all times.

Due to the size of the Fellowship Hall, the complexity of the structures and the furnishings

within, and the myriads of church members who come to worship, therefore, if you have

underlying health issues/concerns, you should not be at worship.
