FROM THE DESK OF THE ADMINISTRATOR

Hopefully having returned from the Holy Land last Wednesday, it was after the “due date” for the bulle-tin. So, some reflections on the Holy Land next time, the Good Lord willing! I have been writing about life-long catechesis. We know it is for everyone using the catechumenal model of evangelization, catechumenate, sacrament, mys-tagogy. Rather than just “slapping on sacraments”, we need to be companioning our children through their youth. And what about the young at heart? We got you covered too! While we speak about the seven defined sacra-ments, what are the other “sacramental moments” of life? I think about the first child going to school or the last child going to school, whether that’s for preschool, kindergarten, grade school, high school or even col-lege! What about the challenging sacramental moments of career or job changes? How about when children marry and grandchildren come? What about empty nesting or when retirement happens? What about sick-ness? What about the death of a spouse at any age? These are sacred moments that should be a part of our life of faith. We should be companioning each other at these and a host of other times. People shouldn’t be falling between the cracks. What I am suggesting is an absolutely necessary paradigm shift in our understanding of faith formation. I will be honest and say our present way of faith forma-tion has failed us. That’s why we have the generation of “nones” – those who have no religious affiliation at all. That’s why we hear folks talking about being “spiritual” but not “religious” – “Oh, I pray, but I don’t need to do that in a church or an organized religion”. That’s one of the reasons why our pews have grown empty. We can’t be “business as usual” anymore! This is going to take a lot of work on all of our parts. Are you willing to roll up your sleeves and get to work? This is not someone else’s responsibility. It is OURS! We can’t pass the buck. We’re not going to hire someone to do this for us. We have to be in this to-gether. Who’s with me? As a side note, next week is the time for the Trien-nial Multi Day Convocation for the Priests in Oglebay, WV. It runs from Monday afternoon until Thursday. Please keep us in your prayers that it be a restful and fruitful time for each of us. More details to come, espe-cially concerning Masses and confessions. See you in church! Fr. Jim Gretz

MASS OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK AT HOLY SPIRIT CHURCH

The Annual Mass for the Com-munal Anointing of the Sick will take place on Monday, October 21st at 6:30pm in Holy Spirit Church. It is open to members of all parishes, mostly especially those in our grouping, who wish to participate in the healing

power of this great sacrament. Holy Spirit Christian Mothers will host and act as greeters, assist with the seating and pro-vide a light reception following the Mass in the parish cafeteria. It is preferable that we receive the names of those to be anointed by calling the parish office at 412-821-4424. However, no RSVP is required for the reception. Walk-ins will be welcomed as well.

CASH RAFFLE AT HSP A HUGE SUCCESS There are a lot of “thank you’s” to go around for the great re-sponse to our 2019 Cash Raffle. We will not be naming names in the event that someone is for-gotten. You know who you are and know that your parish is

most grateful! However, we do want to single out one person – Chuck Weidenweber – who for a number of days would sit in front of Kuhn’s Market on McKnight Road and sell raffle tickets. His raffle sales alone brought in a staggering number of sales. The total proceeds of the raffle will be forthcoming. Following is a listing of the 10 cash raffle winners: $3,000 – Debora Kuzmanko; $1,500 – Catherine Sikora; $500 – Mrs. Angelo Tabuso; $300 – L. Lang; $200 – Do-nato Sciulli; $100 – Ronald Argenas II; $100 – Ralph Waibel; $100 – Karen Glenn; $100 – Arlene Stoehr and $100 – Brian Park. Most grateful to all who purchased tickets, thereby assuring that our Cash Raffle was a success! Thank you!!

MANDATORY WORKSHOP FOR CHURCH VOLUNTEERS All Saints Parish in Etna will be holding a Protecting God’s Children workshop on Saturday, October 5th, from 9 am to 12:00 noon in the parish Activities Building. This work-shop is mandatory for all volunteers and employees of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and it is also very highly rec-ommended for parents, grandparents and all those who work with children. There is no cost to attend. To regis-ter, please call Anna at 412-781-0530.

BLESSING OF ANIMALS AT HOLY SPIRIT The Blessing of Animals will take place on Saturday, October 5th at NOON in front of Holy Spirit Church. The tradition, held at many churches, comes from St. Francis of

Assisi (whose feast is October 4th). St. Francis realized that animals are an integral part of God’s plan and crea-tion. This blessing is primarily for domestic animals. Dog and cats should be on leashes. Birds, rabbits and ham-sters in cages. Perhaps you might want to discern whether your pet would be “comfortable” with other animals. Borough ordinances regarding disposal of animal waste will apply! As always, voluntary collection of pet food items will be welcomed and distributed to animal shelters and to our senior citizens for their personal pets.

REGISTRATIONS STILL ACCEPTED FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES

As you are aware, Religious Education Classes take place each Sunday in the former Holy Spirit School Bldg from 9:30am to 10:45am. There seems to be a number of families who have not yet registered their child or children for classes this year. We realize that some people like to wait to the last minute. But even more concerning might be the fact that other things like sports, music les-sons and other commitments may be taking the place of Religious Education. We would hope that every family with children in the public schools ensure that their children – under the guidance of their parents or guardians – make the neces-sary commitment for these classes which our children will carry with them for the rest of their lives. If you have not as yet registered your family mem-bers, kindly do so as quickly as possible. This is espe-cially important for 2nd graders who intend to make their First Holy Communion and 8th graders who need to be prepared for the Sacrament of Confirmation. All calls concerning religious education should be directed to Elaine Magill at 412-821-2099 or email her at [email protected].

HOLY SPIRIT FUNDRAISING MEETING The next Cash Bash fundraising committee meeting is this Monday, September 23, at 6:00 PM in the school cafeteria. All are welcome to join our Holy Spirit Parish fundraising committee.

WEEKEND RETREAT FOR POST-ABORTION HEALING Rachel’s Vineyard, a weekend retreat designed to heal the emotional and spiritual wounds

of abortion, will be held November 22nd-24th at The Ark and The Dove Retreat Center (Gibsonia, Pa). In a confi-dential and supportive atmosphere, Rachel’s Vineyard demonstrates God’s love, forgiveness, and compassion to women and men struggling with abortion’s aftermath. To register or for more information, contact Toni Jester at 412-352-5348 or [email protected].
