Another busy week at Holy Spirit College! Sporting commitments are increasing for the winter months, as well as significant preparation for the upcoming College production. Don’t forget to purchase your tickets. June 23 to 25 at the Miner’s Lamp Theatre Corrimal. We look forward to seeing you there.

Enrolment interviews for Year 7 2017 were completed and the offers will be issued in the second last week of this term. Senior representatives from Year 11 and Mrs Knowles attended Breakfast with the Bishop at John Therry Catholic High School. This was a wonderful experience for the students and they gained an effective insight into the work of the Bishop and his office. Assessments are now in place for most year groups and reports for semester one being prepared by the College staff.

Next week I am attending a Josephite Conference in Christchurch, New Zealand. The Catholic Education Office has an immersion program for all of their Education Office and Ms Cynthia McCammon will be Acting Principal in my absence from Tuesday to Friday. Ms McCammon used to work at Holy Spirit College and we welcome her and I wish her well for the week.

We have also been working through the Master Planning for the site and provision for future teaching resources for the students. The Australian government has had a focus on the future through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM). What I see as really important along with subject specific knowledge is the ability to be creative and have a great understanding of the design process. This is what our young people need for a solid future in employment across many different industries. The ability to be creative does not depend on intelligence, but on the ability to problem solve and to ‘think outside’ given parameters. Young people need to be able to work collaboratively and have the capacity to incorporate ideas from others, communicate ideas well, and to source information as required. These skills are covered in many areas of the curriculum and I believe that students need wide and varied experiences to develop a work-ready skill set. This is going to be a future focus for the College.

Year 11 Work Experience I remind all Year 11 students that they need to be organised for their work experience, as I expect all students to use the week productively and to experience the world of work in an area related to their interests. This exposure to the workplace can be invaluable for setting a future direction.

Dental Bus Please make sure your Dental Bus forms are returned, as this is a wonderful opportunity for free dental care. Please make the most of this service.

Prayer for ReconciliationLord, open up our hearts so that we may hear the

message you teach of a world in which the wrongs of the past are recognised,

a world in which a reconciled people walk and talk together sharing stories;

a world in which all burn with the desire to have your peace and justice reign.

That the wrongs of the past may be recognized,That our awareness of the journey so far be

awakened,And that the Spirit moves us to walk the talk and see

through what has been started. We ask this in the name of the Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit.

AMEN

Writing Competition

On June 16 all Year 8 students will be participating in the annual International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) writing competition run by the UNSW during their usual timetabled lesson. This competition provides valuable insights for both the individual student and the school.

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Writing competition assesses students’ ability to write an extended response to a given task. This year will focus on a narrative response.

Good luck Year 8 Students!

Mrs Kelli Davidson Grose

Year 8 and 10 Australian National History Competition

Years 8 and 10 History will be competing in an Australian wide competition on Wednesday 25 June. Year 8 will be undertaking the competition during periods 1 & 2 and Year 10 during periods 3 and 4. Unfortunately, the competition has fallen at a bad time for the students as it coincides with the start of the exam period. Students however will not have to study for this competition as it is skills-based with all source material provided.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our History buffs to challenge themselves against the rest of Australia.Students are requested to bring one or two HB or darker pencils and an eraser to the competition.

Conversations with the Bishop

On Thursday 2 June, St John Therry College in Rosemeadow hosted ‘A Conversation With The Bishop’. Darcy Jordan, Phoebe Hinde, Rebecca Aramayo and Ashleigh Walsh of Year 11, were lucky enough to attend this event along with 12 other Catholic High Schools from the Wollongong Diocese.

We spent the course of the day participating in activities that encouraged us to reflect on the Catholic Church’s teachings and the impact they have on the lives of young people today. We began by listening to the story of Bishop Peter Ingham’s life, his childhood, journey through priesthood, and the triumphs and hardships he has faced. We were given the opportunity to ask Bishop Peter questions about issues facing the youth and ways in which we could approach certain situations. Most of all, we were provided with a greater understanding of the role our Bishop fills within the Wollongong Diocese and the inspiring work he does for our Catholic Schools and Churches in the area. We are very privileged to have such an amazing role model and leader in our community.

We would like to thank Mrs Wilson for the invitation to attend, The Catholic Education Office in Wollongong for organising such a wonderful day and John Therry High School for hosting the day. We would also like to thank Mrs Knowles for kindly taking us to the event. It is much appreciated.

Student Presentations for 2016

Paul Dillon Head of DARTA will be delivering Drug and Alcohol Information Presentations to Years 10, 11 and 12 on Monday June 20.

Year 10

Young people, alcohol and risk taking: Looking after your mates.

The presentation focuses primarily on alcohol and attempts to ‘bust’ some of the myths around drinking and particularly on how to look after friends. It provides accurate, up-to-date and credible information so that informed choices can be made by the young people, covering issues such as perceived prevalence of alcohol and other drug use by young people, the risks associated with drinking spirits and the dangers associated with the disinhibiting effects of alcohol. Basic life skills will also be discussed around alcohol-related emergencies, particularly in regards to looking after themselves and their friends.

Year 11

Alcohol and cannabis: What if something goes wrong?

Building on the information delivered in the Year 10 session, this presentation again focuses on the risks around alcohol use for young people, as well as introducing some information on cannabis. Practical strategies around ‘looking after your friends’ will be reviewed and additional information provided. Potential harms associated with cannabis use will be discussed, with a particular emphasis on its impact on mental health. Students will then be given some warning signs to look out for in friends who may be experiencing problems with their cannabis use. The presentation will end with some information on the impact of alcohol on the adolescent brain.

Year 12

Last year at school: What do I need to know about alcohol and other drugs?

This presentation provides information on a range of issues that students in their last year of school are likely to face currently or in the years ahead. Many of these students will now be driving or about to get their licence, so drink driving and the process of random breath testing (RBT), as well as roadside (RDT) or mobile drug testing (MDT) will be covered. This is the last opportunity to discuss illicit drugs such as ecstasy and some basic information will be provided, including the impact that being caught with an illicit substance can have on a young person’s life and the importance of seeking help as quickly as possible should something go wrong after use. Where appropriate, issues around attending Schoolies’ Week celebrations will be covered.

More information about Paul Dillon and his company can be found on his webpage www.darta.net.au

HOLY SPIR IT COLLEGE Be l lambipresents an evening of double entertainment

Under 14’s Boys Rugby League Steelers CupOn May 17, a beautiful sunny autumn day, Holy Spirit College participated in the Steelers Cup (Buckley Shield). The Competition involved Catholic and State Schools as far flung as Mulwaree High, Goulburn to the west, Kiama High to the south and Bulli High to the north.

We were pitched against two other Catholic Schools in our pool, Corpus Christi and Edmund Rice College. In the first game we quickly skipped to a 2 try advantage which was quickly relinquished by Corpus Christi’s talented fullback who scored twice in quick succession. In the end Holy Spirit College proved to be too strong crossing the line twice again with a sensational solo effort from Brandon Morkos. The final score 22-12.

Our second game against Edmund Rice was an entertaining affair. The sides were closely matched and played intelligently and with great passion. The game ended in a draw 12-12, however Holy Spirit College got the advantage owing to scoring first in the game.

The boys were a little weary after their second game and had to regroup against Kiama High, the ultimate winners of the overall competition. The game was very close with a multitude of penalties from a referee who was very happy to blow his whistle. Ultimately we went down 20-18, ending the day with a worrying ankle injury to our star Captain, Jordan Karakousis.

I think some of our players weren’t too concerned with the loss. They were battle weary and happy to go home and lick their wounds.

I was very proud of the boys. They all played with vigour and good sportsmanship. The Tom Anderton Shield is coming up in week 7 so we face our nemesis, Edmund Rice College once again.

Squad: Benjamin Cauduro, Euan Colquhoun, Rory Green, Noah Hill, Spencer Hines, Jordan Karakousis (Captain), Joel Kettley, Harry Marning, Thomas Morgera, Brandon Morkos, Harrison Mormile, Jamie Perusco, Jacob Petre, Kane Rodwell, Matthew Toohey, Beau Yeaman, Samuel Zustovich
