November 21 - 22, 2015
…from the Pastor’s Desk: We celebrate Thanksgiving this Thursday. It‘s a favorite holiday as family and friends gather to eat turkey and pumpkin pie, and maybe watch some football. Inevitably on that day someone will ask, ―So – what are you thankful for?
And the usual will be offered; Family, health, friends, parish, faith, job, country, and the like. Same, same. It doesn‘t mean we do not mean them- it‘s more that we just don‘t think about adding much to the list during the rest of the year. So, it is good to ask ourselves- how do we show thanks for them? And, how do we show thanks to God for everything?
Sometimes, instead of being thankful for what we have, for the gifts from God, we look around to see what others have. Or worse, we want what they have – instead of them having it.
One way to break free of that is to stop, take a breath and say thanks to God. That small prayer of thanksgiving really gives back to the one praying. It helps return focus to God and to what is really important – but are often taken for granted. Thanking God for the simple things comes naturally. Thanking the people around us requires a constant effort.
Here is a reminder of giving thanks for the simple everyday things that we don‘t notice:
I am thankful for the mess to clean up after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends.
I am thankful for the homework I have to do because it means I live in a country where I am free to study and learn.
I am thankful for the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have had enough to eat.
I am thankful for my chores, because it means I have a home.
I am thankful for all the complaining I do
about the government because it means we have freedom of speech.
I am thankful for the parking spot I find even way down the block, because it means I am capable of walking.
I am thankful for my big heating bill because it means I am warm.
I am thankful for the person behind me in Church who sings off-key because it means I can hear.
I am thankful for the piles of laundry and ironing, and dishes to wash, because it means I have a family.
I am thankful for weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I have been productive.
And finally,
I am thankful for the alarm clock that goes off early in the morning because it means that ..............I am still alive.
So, we take a few moments to remember what it is that you are thankful for.
Happy Thanksgiving my friend.
I...am Thankful ...for you.

The Advent Season lights four candles in winter

candles, we retell our holy stories from scripture.
All are invited to join us on Sunday evenings after
the new Sunday evening mass (about 6:30 pm) to
break open the Sunday readings helping us to
deepen our response and anchor sharing, prayer
and fellowship with God and each other.
We will order Paper Murphy’s Pizza to fill our
stomachs as well as our hearts and spirts! Sign up

Sunday Evening Mass
As mentioned in last week’s bulletin we are starting a Sunday evening mass at 5:30 beginning November 29th. A mass not so much primarily just for ‘Youth’ or even ‘Young Adults’ but one that certainly will engage them and address the realities of their lives.
It will also provide a time for young families, and single people as well who might not otherwise be able to attend the Sunday Morning services.
The mass will be contemporary, progressive and efficient in that it is ‘no-frills’. Not that we will rush or skip anything. We will certainly be respectful and adhere to all liturgical guidelines.
Advent is a good time to start it. If it catches on through Advent and the Christmas season – we’ll re-evaluate and decide whether to keep it. If not, well, we won’t.
As far as readers and Eucharistic Ministers and Music – I am leaving that in the Holy Spirits hands (or…Wings). I have to see who shows an interest.
Bottom Line: Starting November 29th, Holy Spirt Catholic Church will have a Sunday evening mass beginning at 5:30pm.
