A GREAT WAY TO HELP A HURTING

FRIEND Do you have a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative

going through a difficult time? A Stephen Minister may be able to offer the support he or she needs. Stephen Ministers are members of our church trained to provide emotional and spiritual care to people who are hurting. To learn how you can help a friend receive care, contact our Holy Spirit Church Stephen Ministry Leader David Chaffee (913) 317-8393.

Our Stephen Ministers Are There To Care!

“Silent Strength” prayer group is dedicated to praying for our Catholic children, friends and relatives who have fallen away from the church. We meet on the 1st & 3rd Mondays of the month at 7:20 am in the Martha & Mary Room.

Welcome Fr. Ric Halvorson to our parish on Thursday, Feb. 18, 7:00 pm. Please join us for an evening of fellowship as we welcome Fr. Ric to our parish. WOS and SGC are hosting the evening in the M/M room. Soup and salad will be served. All women of the parish are invited.

Please do not park in the fire lanes (curbing painted yellow) when attending Mass.

There is parking available in the parking lot. We all want emergency personnel to be able to get here quickly

in the event of an emergency. Thank you.

Your pledge is appreciated! As we look at our lives and the many ways God has blessed us, let us give back a proportionate gift to the Archbishop’s Call to Share. Our archdiocesan family is truly an extension of our parish life. We are grateful to those who take part in this effort!

Our parish goal is $185,783.00. To date, 8% of our parishioners have made pledges of $ 64,410.00 which is 35% of our goal. Thank you for your generous gifts in support of the ministries of the Church in Northeast Kansas!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED There are many ways to be involved in your parish but one of the more personal ways to embrace the Year of Mercy is to bring a meal to a parish family in need. There is a wonderful program in our parish lead by Ellyn Tyrell. It's an easy, online program which allows you to cook a meal or send a meal. More volunteers are needed to make this program successful and respond to the occasional needs of our parish family. Please contact Ellyn Tyrell at [email protected] or 913-469-6211.

Marriage Minute ~ February 14 This year the first Sunday of Lent falls on Valentine’s Day. While prayer, fasting and almsgiving don’t seem particularly romantic, there is actually a significant tie-in. In today’s Gospel, Jesus is tempted by Satan to put temporal things such as money and power before his relationship with the Father. Isn’t that what gets in the way of us feeling “in love” in our marriages? Long hours at work crowd out time together. Stress about bills makes us snap at each other. A desire to be right drives a wedge between us. We don’t mean it, but sometimes these things get in the way of the fundamental truth that we are a man and woman in love. If this is our situation, what if we decided to rethink Lent this year? What if we skipped giving up chocolate and instead tried to do something we know would make our spouse feel more loved? Here are some ideas: • Skip lunch out at work and buy flowers with the money. • Fast from criticism. • Suggest a date night (out or in) that includes your spouse’s favorite

activity. • Make an effort to correct a habit that irritates your spouse. • Be home by six for dinner. • Set a specific time to pray for or with your spouse. For marriage enrichment opportunities, check out www.archkck.org/family. Let us take advantage of the graces of Lent to help improve our most significant relationship!

In this dynamic talk Dr. Scott Hahn explains the im-portance of oaths, which invoke God’s name and implore His assistance. He shows that oaths are also the means of transforming our personal relationship with Christ into a covenant relationship. Dr. Hahn then explains what led him to move from believing in only two Sacraments to all seven. In sharing these insights, he connects oaths to the seven Sacraments and unveils their mystery and im-

portance. He reveals that the Sacraments are the ordinary means by which God empowers us to do His will. You'll discover that the Sacraments don’t make holiness easy, but they do make it possible. $3 suggested donation.

First Sunday of Lent February 14, 2016 SISTER M. TERESA, FSGM

DIRECTOR of School of Religion

Introduction of Pope Francis’

2016 Lenten Message “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice” (Mt 9:13).

The works of mercy on the road of the Jubilee 1. Mary, the image of a Church which evangelizes because she is evangelized. In the Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, I asked that “the season of Lent in this Jubilee Year be lived more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus,17). By calling for an attentive listening to the word of God and encouraging the initiative “24 Hours for the Lord,” I sought to stress the primacy of prayerful listening to God’s word, especially His prophetic word. The mercy of God is a proclamation made to the world, a proclamation which each Christian is called to experience first hand. For this reason, during the season of Lent I will send out Missionaries of Mercy as a concrete sign to everyone of God’s closeness and forgiveness. After receiving the Good News told to her by the Archangel Gabriel, Mary, in her Magnificat, prophetically sings of the mercy whereby God chose her. The Virgin of Nazareth, betrothed to Joseph, thus becomes the perfect icon of the Church which evangelizes, for she was, and continues to be, evangelized by the Holy Spirit, who made her virginal womb fruitful. In the prophetic tradition, mercy is strictly related – even on the etymological level – to the maternal womb (rahamim) and to a generous, faithful and compassionate goodness (hesed) shown within marriage and family relationships.

[email protected]. As our class prepares to receive the Sacraments of Initiation and enter the Church at Easter, we look at some of the things they are doing to prepare:

January 30th: We attended a retreat at Holy Trinity, Chosen in Christ, put on by the Archdiocese. February 14th: Our Parish will send them off to their next phase in RCIA at the 10:30 Mass, where the Archbishop will celebrate Fr. Ric's installation as Pastor. February 16th: Those in the class who wish to continue their journey to Catholicism, will attend the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion, which marks a significant step in the process. Archbishop Naumann chooses them, elects them, in the name of the Lord and our Church, where they belong. Throughout Lent, the parish will pray for the class several times during Mass during minor rites.

Thank you for keeping our class in your prayers!

Dear Holy Spirit Families, My name is Jimmy Cahill, and I am in eighth grade and a Boy Scout at Holy Spirit. I am collecting items for the Sisters from The Apostles of the Interior Life. The Sisters live entirely off of what is given to them (Divine providence). They are working on a room in their house in Lawrence. They are fixing it up for Bible studies and gatherings with KU students and they have requested a religious framed photo. It would hang above a daybed, so larger sizes would work. If you can donate, or if you have any questions, please email me at [email protected].

Congratulations to the follow-ing families whose children were baptized here: Adalynn Rose Seaton, child of Nicholas & Emily Seaton, and Ava Scarlet Ford, child of Brandon & Abby Ford.
