Special thanks to our Youth and Adult choirs, under the direction of Maria D’Angelo Dougherty, for the beautiful and inspiring Christmas music and angelic singing! This made the Mass a joyous celebration. You are greatly appreciated. Thank you and God bless you all.

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Christmas flower collection this year. The sanctuary looked beautiful because of your generosity. If you need a copy of the flower donation list, call the parish office.

The Food Bank Collection total for the month of December was a most remarkable amount of $1,327.00 in monetary donations. Because of your generosity, many families will have a delicious Christmas dinner! Thank you for all your support this year and may God bless you as plentifully as you bless others. Mass Intentions for 2019—Please be aware of our new Mass times and, if possible, submit your Mass requests via the collection basket or mail. Please include a Mass stipend of $10 per Mass as determined by Diocesan policy along with your telephone number and/or email. Include a self-addressed envelope if you would like to know when the Mass was scheduled. Also, a few dates still remain in 2019 for the outdoor Pieta Shrine for a $5 donation.

Our Knights of Columbus is happy to announce that the Annual Wreaths Across America, Wreath Laying Ceremony at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies was a great success.

More than 11,000 wreaths were placed on the Veterans graves by approximately 2,000 volunteers in less than a half-hour. Our Council is a W.A.A. Fundraising Group Sponsor and are proud of the 947 wreaths sponsored on our behalf. We owe our gratitude to our members, neighboring Knights of Columbus groups, parishioners, businesses, clubs, First Responders, and friends who sponsored wreaths. Our goal is to make sure there is a wreath for every Veteran’s grave. God bless you.

Our special thanks to Salandra Funeral Home for their generosity in

providing the beautiful Feasts and Saints calendars for 2019. Please pick up your copy.

Welcome to Claire Elizabeth Dinnen, daughter of Ryan and Julia Garrity Dinnen, who was baptized last Sunday. Congratulations and may the Lord bless

you in grace and goodness always. The Meaning of the Mass — Come and deepen your faith on Sunday, Jan. 6 from 9 to 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Center. Deacon Joseph Cerenzia will be offering a workshop on “The Meaning of the Mass.”

It is the ultimate expression of worshiping God, in which we join with Christ to thank, praise and glorify the Father. This discussion unlocks the richness of the Mass, reviews its connection to the Old Testament and focuses on how grace received through the Pascal Mystery enables us to fulfill the mission of Christ in the world.

Balancing work and prayer—Fr. Jon Brzek, parochial vicar at St. Joan of Arc/St. Louise de Marillac Parish, will present and lead discussion on the importance of keeping focus on Christ while balancing work and prayer on Sunday, Jan. 6 at St.

Louise de Marillac Church, Upper St. Clair, in the Bishop Leonard Room (directly under the church).

Fr. Jon was born in McKeesport, attended Duquesne University, St. Vincent Seminary and California University of PA. Fr. Jon was Chaplain for the US Navy for 16 years on ships with overseas assignments. Please arrive to be seated before 1:45 p.m. when Daytime Prayer from Liturgy of the Hours begins. The meeting will end at 3 p.m. with an opportunity to stay for refreshments.

Readings for Sunday, Jan. 6

First Reading -- Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The Lord shines upon you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm -- Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72).

Second Reading -- The Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel -- Magi from the east arrived, looking for the newborn king of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-12).

From the Desk of Fr. DeVille: Homily from December 23, 2018

Today, the fourth Sunday of Advent, is the last

Sunday of four Sundays of Advent. During these four weeks of Advent, we have been listening to the Scripture that reminds us of the need that we all have to prepare ourselves for the coming of the Lord on Christmas Day.

Now is also the time to consider how our relationship with God has progressed during the Advent season and in this year that is about to end.

During the season of Advent, the liturgy has been attempting to make us aware of the importance of the coming of Christ on earth. Just as John the Baptist prepared the way for the coming of Christ, today the church has acted as the “advance man” for Christ, preaching the need for spiritual preparation and repentance.

Christmas should be the time of universal joy. The birth of Christ, brings new spiritual life that should generate love and joy in our hearts. As we approach Christmas Day we should ask, “is there someone in our family or acquaintances who is lonely, sick or estranged?” Would my presence make a difference? God’s grace works in wondrous ways.

Each act we perform has reference to Christ’s teaching. The moral code, we attempt to follow is based on his teaching of the love of God and the love of neighbor.

There is one day remaining to complete our preparation for the birth of Christ. Will you be ready on Christmas Day?

Thank you to everyone who made our Christmas Masses here at Holy Rosary so very beautiful. Many willing hands were needed for various needs including singing, planning, ushering, setting up extra chairs, volunteering, cleaning, decorating, donating and so

much more. Your kindness is greatly appreciated. God bless you.

Today ’s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflicting schedules and commitments, a young man, testing the limits, has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big

city. Mary and Joseph search frantically, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and scholars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious center of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gathered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. Still, everyone longed to journey to the temple to participate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obligations of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tradition. There has always been an appreciation in Christianity for the value of pilgrimage--the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life's journey to God, and a sense of connection to important events in our family history. During the Christmas season, many of us undertake pilgrimages to the family homestead for festival meals, to the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights. There are few better days than this in our calendar for spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one gets left behind!
