WYD PILGRIMAGE

SAA Airmiles needed. One way to help ourWYD pilgrims to travel to Brasil in July 2013would be to donate SAA airmile rewards to theirtravel. With enough airmiles (around 120 000 each)the costs will be dramatically reduced. Any parish-ioner who feel they would like to help using theirsurplus airmiles should please contact Wanika on021-761 4256. So far we have enough for 2 of the 8pilgrims to travel.

Just a Thought…

ADVENT HOPE

Some people have told me recently that they have given up watchingthe news. It’s all too gloomy, it should be called “The Bad News”.Watching the ‘Bad News’ every day can generate despair and depres-sion. This sense of misery is heightened at this time of year when toall the bad world news is added the carnage on our roads during thefestive season. Let’s watch sport instead –even though sports news isunfortunately not exempt from its share of grief.

Christian hope stands firmly against the tide of despair. Rooted infaith and informed by love, Christian hope looks steadily at a greaterhorizon, a horizon whose name is God. Christian hope anticipates thefull future of God’s final kingdom and the liberating resurrection of allcreation. Christian hope believes that everyone and everything can beredeemed –in Jesus the Messiah.

Christian hope takes on a special tone in Advent. In Advent the Chris-tian looks more specifically at the coming of Christ in glory. Oftenreferred to as the “Second Coming”, Christians in Advent make readyto present to the Lord of Glory a world of justice, love and peace.Hence Advent hope is not an escape from daily dullness, but a powerfulincentive to prepare a world where truth and beauty and grace aremore pervasive than their opposites.

Perhaps this Advent we can hope for those who have no hope, forthose whose hope is wavering and for those who are trying to sharetheir hope. Our Advent hope can bring light and joy to those who ‘labour and areheavily burdened’. The grace of Advent is available to those who wantit. If we watch the News with Advent hope, we will begin to discernrays of hope in many dismal stories.

“Who is Alpha for?”Alpha is for anyone...anyone who wants to explore

the meaning of life.

People attend from all backgrounds, religions, and viewpoints. They come to investigatequestions about the existence of God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, the claims of Je-sus and more. Some people want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with Godthat really changes their lives. Others come for the close, long-lasting friendships thatare built during the Alpha course.

Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionallybut feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Everyone iswelcome.”
