Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time (A)

July 12, 2020

Reading I: Isaiah 55:10-11 Responsorial Psalm: 65:10,11,12-13,14 Reading II: Romans 8:18-23 Gospel: Matthew 13:1-23 Theme: “But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a

hundred or sixty or thirtyfold” (Gospel).

It takes a lot of labor to water the plants and trees during the summer heat. Even with constant care and attention, some will still not make it. A good downpour of rain is all needed to bring back life and lush to the garden. Praying for rain and begging God to give relief to the parched land is indeed a divine intervention. With rain, we recognize the blessings and God’s goodness that is unfailing. In the first reading, Isaiah says that the word of God is given to us like the rain that waters the earth and bears fruit, so also God’s word transforms the heart that receives it. God’s generosity is abundant even before we see the need for it. It is God’s nature to share and give.

We look too much on our miseries that it closes the door of gratitude. We self pity and aggrandize growth and conditions of things and people. In short, we make it hard for ourselves. As Shakespeare puts it, “much ado about nothing.” This is not to see less of what is going on, like the pandemic crisis. In fact, it is seeing reality as it is. It is horrible, terrifying, and ugly. Yet in the context of God’s grace, it is part and parcel of redemption story. We are all vulnerable and in need of salvation. With God’s mercy and help, we will all make it to a condition and situation where our faith takes us. St. Paul aptly tells us in the second reading. “We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies” (Romans 8:22). Let us prepare our hearts and be ready to receive God’s grace. As the gospel tells us, “But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold” (Mt. 13:23).

Let us pray: God our Father, transform our hearts and make us humble to receive your Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever, Amen.

Lectura I: Isaías 55: 10-11 Salmo Responsorial: 65: 10,11,12-13,14 Lectura II: Romanos 8: 18-23 Evangelio: Mateo 13: 1-23

Pastoral Reflection By Martha Jo Rodriguez, Pastoral Council Co-Chair

The Moral of the Parable of the sower is that not everyone who hears Jesus gospel will understand and believe. Jesus parables about the land. This one is about the sower and the seed stands out as the most insightful in the depths of teaching about the seed of the gospel and the sow and works in the field of life. No other parable shows us now the evil, and all the nows of the world and the cares of life conspire from the root from our lives and eternal truths of his words. Our modern world is full of distractions- the rocks, thorns, and that conspire to prevent God's word and his callings from taking root and bearing fruit. In that knowledge is vital understanding for all of us. The seeds of the Gospel of Jesus are spread before you, make good use of them! Be safe and Blessings

Holy Name Church Attendance Procedures

We ask for Christian patience and understanding during these difficult and challenging times. It is imperative that each of us strictly abide by these procedures to prevent contamination and/or spread of the Covid-19 to one another.

For the safety of all, these procedures are mandatory and must be adhered to for Mass attendance. Anyone who cannot comply are asked to leave. Holy Name Catholic Church Procedures will follow the Archdiocese of San Antonio Guidelines for Mass Attendees and are as follows:

1. If you are feeling sick, we ask that you stay safe at home. We highly encourage those who are most vulnerable to continue to participate in mass via live stream or website (holynameusa.org).

2. Wash hands thoroughly before coming to the church.

3. Everyone must have their temperature taken before entering the church when applicable. Anyone with a fever will not be allowed entry. Anyone coughing or sneezing may not be allowed entry.

4. All must wear a face mask that covers both nose and mouth before entering the church and throughout the Mass. No exceptions except for infant children.

5. Bring hand sanitizer, your own missal or other mass aids to church.

6. Always maintain 6 feet between you and others not in your cohabitating family.

7. Follow the instructions of the ushers as you enter and leave the Church.

8. When guided by the ushers to receive communion, is the only time you may temporarily reposition your mask to consume the Host, then immediately recover.

9. Seating will be on a first come first served basis for now, Mass capacity will be dependent on the number of attendees in each group, we can Safely seat. 10. Unfortunately, there will be no saving of seats. We ask that you ensure you enter with whomever you want to sit with. Once seated we cannot allow anyone to reposition because it will compromise the 6-foot separation distance.

11. After receiving Communion, we need everyone to maintain in their seats until the ushers direct your row towards the exits. We ask that you please be patient, as we are doing our best to maintain exiting in an orderly manner.

12. Finally, we ask that you be very patient with us, especially our volunteers who did not establish these procedures, but are only following them. They are giving of their time to help us conduct Mass, without volunteers this Mass would not happen. Thank you.
