22nd Sunday of Ordinary

Time September 2, 2018

Reading I: Deuteronomy 4:1-2,6-8 Responsorial Psalm 15:2-3,3-4,4-5 Reading II: James 1:17-18,21b-22, 27 Gospel: Mark 7:1-8,14-15,21-23

Theme: “Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal

with unclean hands” (Gospel)?

“Don’t sweat the small stuff and small stuff taking over your life” is a book written by Richard Carlson and contains great insights on why we need to let go of things small and go for the right and bigger issues in life. One of the quotes in the book I like is, “As you put more emphasis on being a loving person, which is something you can control – and less emphasis on receiving love, which is something you can’t control – you’ll find that you have plenty of love in your life.” I bring this up because the gospel today speaks of Pharisees sweating the small stuff over the big ones. The Lord reminds the Pharisees that the integrity of worship and faith is not just the observance of human precepts and doctrines but faithfulness to God’s command of love. “Choose to be kind over being right and you’ll be right every time” (Richard Carlson).

In the second reading, St. James puts into perspective the true and big stuff when it comes to faith and religion. He says, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” We have so many rules that sometimes we forget the real reasons for having the regulations. Occasionally and in order to look from a different angle things you believe are different from yours, stepping back and honest introspection is necessary. Obsession to rules and observances without connection to life and God becomes a kind of Pharisee-ism. Evil is deceptive and the Lord reminds us bluntly where it can originate. "From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, un-chastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile" (Gospel). It is good to close our eyes in order to see more of what God wants us to see. From above, the view is lot bigger.

Let us pray: Lord, teach us to be humble, sincere, and pure in love. Make our hearts open to you and generous to all in need. Give us the grace to accommodate your abundant blessings and mercy, Amen.

Pastoral Reflection By Yvonne Rodriguez, Pastoral Council Member

In today’s gospel Mark shares information about the Pharisees and Jews ritual of not eating without carefully washing their hands in keeping the tradition of the elders. Many believed that Mark included this information because his audience had no knowledge of these rituals which inferred that many in his community were not Jewish Christians. Jesus criticizes the Pharisees for placing human tradition above God’s commandment. Jesus also comments on the significance behind the Pharisees’ language of holiness….referring to clean and unclean. He teaches that a person is not tainted by the food that passes into his or her body but rather by the sin that emerges from his or her words and actions. This reveals a deeper question following the one presented to him by the Pharisees. The real subject is holiness which comes from within and is demonstrated in the actions and attitudes that appear in a person’s life.

In today’s reading, the words to the Pharisees are often words of challenge. Jesus’ words challenge us as well. In our need to show that we are holy, we often give too much credibility to externals when we follow rules without thinking about the intentions behind the rules. Jesus reminds us that we do not make ourselves holy by our actions but, rather, we become holy when we allow God’s spirit to convert us. Our actions should reflect the conversion of our heart to our God and his ways.

Our children and school administrators have begun a new school year and will be enjoying this Labor Day weekend and first school holiday as most of us will as well. We pray for their continued success in the new year and the many challenges they will face. We are confident that their actions and their hearts will reflect the knowledge they gain from their teachers and family.

Holy Name Parish Year End Financial Report

Fellow Parishioners The year end financial report is included in this week’s bulletin. The report covers all financial activity beginning July 1st 2017 through June 30th 2018 as the fiscal year concludes on the last day of June each year. The report as always displays comparison data from the previous year. You will notice a new general ledger category named “ Bad Debt Expense”. This category was used for a one time write off of existing uncollectable receivables from the Holy Name school dating back to the 2015 - 2017 School years. This function was suggested by the Archdiocese and clears the books from old debt and brings all school related transactions current. On behalf of Father Martin and the Finance council we thank you all for your continued generosity in offering our financial resources to the Parish and our community. We appreciate all of your support and continue to work diligently for the best possible stewardship of your offerings.

Blessings to all, Gary Mulhollen Finance Council Chairman
