Message from the Rector Dear People of God,

Our Season of Advent has begun. The liturgical colors have changed and the daylight continues to grow shorter. The crisp November air gives way to December’s bitter winds as the barren trees brace for another long winter. Over the next few Sundays our Advent wreath will symbolize the light of Christ overcoming the darkness of our lives. Christ, our light and our hope, is the in-breaking of God into our midst. As we begin our Advent Season, it’s easy to lose perspective and the “reason for the season.” Let us not take Christ out of Christmas and let us wrap the gifts of love, compassion, forgiveness and time for all people, especially our family, friends and the poor. For Advent is about waiting—our waiting for God and God’s waiting for us. Most importantly, we make Christ present in our midst by serving and loving others—especially those who are poor. Advent also speaks of patience and relationships—especially family. Isn’t it ironic that Advent gives way to Christmas morn which is followed by the Feast of the Holy Family. I share with you this reflection . . . and pass it on.

Family I ran into a stranger as he passed by,

“Oh excuse me please” was my reply. He said, “Please excuse me too: I wasn’t watching for you.”

We were very polite, this stranger and I. We went on our way and we said good-bye.

But at home a different story is told, how we treat our loved ones, young and old.

Later that day, cooking the evening meal, My son stood beside me very still.

When I turned I nearly knocked him down. “Move out of the way,” I said with a frown.

He walked away, his little heart broken. I didn’t realize how harshly I had spoken.

While I lay awake in bed, God’s still small voice came to me and said, “While dealing with a stranger, common courtesy you use,

But the family you love, you seem to abuse. Go and look on the kitchen floor, you’ll find some flowers there by the door.

Those are the flowers he brought for you. He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue. He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise.

You never saw the tears that filled his little eyes. By this time, I felt very small. And now my tears began to fall.

I quietly went and knelt by his bed; “Wake up, little one, wake up,” I said. “Are these the flowers you picked for me?”

He smiled, “I found them by the tree.” “I picked them because they’re pretty like you. I knew you’d like ‘em, especially the blue.”

I said, “Son, I’m very sorry for the way I acted today; I shouldn’t have yelled at you that way.”

He said, “Oh, Mom, that’s okay. I love you anyway.” I said, “Son, I love you too, and I do like the flowers, especially the blue.”

As we begin Advent—ask the right questions—keep perspective—don’t miss the point of this beautiful Season of waiting—the gift of family—and always root life with faith in God—and sprinkle a sense of humor, patience and forgiveness!

ADVENT SMALL GROUP

Faith Formation Commission offers an opportunity to spiritually connect with Advent, using Kerry Weber’s Mercy in the City. The group will meet for three sessions, December 4, 11, and 18. Space is limited. To register contact Dr. Ken Ortega.

YEAR ROUND CATECHUMENATE

In this Advent season, we celebrate the fruits of this new process. At three separate liturgical celebrations we received 32 adults into the Catholic Church:

Eleven newly-baptized adults

Ten adults, baptized in other Christian traditions, making a Profession to the Catholic Faith

Eleven Roman Catholics completing the Sacraments of Initiation.

We are currently preparing 9 adults and one child for the Rite of Acceptance (December 15), and meeting with two inquirers.

Your 3.5 hours of volunteering not only contributes to local families’ meals but also provides food credits for Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly to use to purchase food from the Depository. You are invited to join our vibrant community of Ministers of Care (MoC) serving Catholics who are hospitalized or homebound and cannot come to Mass. We have openings at all five locations (Galter, Feinberg, Prentice at Northwestern Hospital, Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, and Warren Barr Rehab Center) as well as opportunities to serve the Homebound. Schedules are very flexible and you will receive complete training beginning at 8:30am on Saturday, December 7. Our training classes are taught primarily by Holy Name Cathedral priests and hospital chaplains.

Our Parish Life Commission invites you to our annual Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, December 8 from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM in our parish cafeteria. Our generous neighbor, Sunny Side Up, will be preparing pancakes and sausage, juice and coffee for the bargain price of $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.

Everyone who attends will be given a Christmas season remembrance as well as a free raffle ticket for a Christmas decoration!

Perhaps the most striking feature of the Cathedral, the Resurrection Crucifix, created by artist Ivo Demetz, in 1969, is a powerful interpretation of this universal sign of Christianity. The wooden Cross depicts Christ as he is today and always - not a figure in agony, but the risen and triumphant Lord who died for our salvation. You can own an 8 inch replica to display in your home or give as gifts just in time for Christmas. Donation is $20.00 each and can be purchased in the Rectory office. Events Holy Name Cathedral Young Adults welcome everyone in their 20’s and 30’s to share companionship in Christ.

FAITH AND FOOTBALL: PRAYERS & BEARS Thursday, Dec. 5, 7:00pm (After Prayers with Mary)Audience: Young Adults (those 21-39 years old) Join us for a night of faith and football on Thursday, December 5th! Prayers with Mary will start at 6 pm in the chapel. Rosaries, Miraculous Medals & prayer guides will be provided. If you need help finding the chapel, feel free to ask the security guard inside of Holy Name for assistance. Around 7 pm, we will head over to Jake Melnick’s (41 E Superior Street) to catch the Bears game. You are welcome to join us at any point in the evening during either prayers or social. Looking forward to an evening of faith, food, fellowship and football!

YOUNG ADULT TOY DRIVE Sat Dec 7—Sun Dec 8, Before/After all masses Audience: All Ages Our annual Christmas Toy Drive will occur December 7 and 8. Toys and monetary gifts will be collected to be donated to Catholic Charities and given to families in need. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy to Mass to donate. No gift is too small. If you don’t have time to shop, a donation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! ZOO LIGHTS SOCIAL Saturday December 7 at 6:30pm Audience: Young Adults (those 21-39 years old) Join us after the 5:15pm mass as we head to Zoo Lights at Lincoln Park Zoo. This fun, free, family-oriented holiday celebration features luminous displays and holiday season activities throughout the zoo. Mass Intentions: Weekday Mass intentions are available for parishioners who would like their intentions to be remembered at Mass. Intentions are available for those who have died or through a Spiritual Bouquet for someone who is living. Stop by the Cathedral Administrative Offices to obtain a date and time.

Eucharistic Adoration: Join in adoration in the Cathedral on the first Friday of the every month and every Thursday after the 12:10 p.m. Mass. Rosary: The Rosary is prayed Monday through Wednesday after the 5:15 p.m. Mass. On the first Wednesday, our Rosary and Novena honor Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Tours: Want to know more about the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Chicago and this historic landmark in our city? Schedule a tour through our website with one of our Cathedral Docents. Baptisms: Infant baptisms are celebrated on designated Sundays throughout the year at 2:00 p.m. Parents of infants are asked to participate in a one-time baptism preparation class before the baptism. Baptisms for children over the age of six are coordinated through our Children’s Faith Formation program. Marriage: You must be a currently registered member of Holy Name Cathedral in order to be married at the Cathedral. Please allow at least six months prior to the wedding date you desire before making any other plans. Consult our website for more information on celebrating the sacrament of matrimony at the Cathedral.
