Holy Land Photographs from the 1800s

American and European travelers explored the Holy Land in the 1800s, among them Mark Twain whose book, Innocents Abroad, describes his personal experience of the dismal conditions in the Holy Land at that time.

European and American photographers shot scenes of the Holy Land. Until then, Holy Land scenes were depicted in paintings - largely the products of active imaginations. Photos showed the real story.

Many of the scenes in the following photos are the same today. Only a visit to the Holy Land allows comparison. Check out these photos to whet the appetite - and perhaps we can welcome you to Israel one of these days.

Galilee Scenes

From Mount Tabor - site of the Transfiguration - to Cana - site of the miracle of water into wine - to the holy sites along the Sea of Galilee, the holy sites in the Galilee can be visited and experienced by hiking the Jesus Trail, or by car, far less strenuous.

Here's a thought for couples: renew your vows at the Wedding Church in the village of Cana, followed by a festive meal of local ethnic foods. Experience Romantic Holy Land.

Jerusalem Scenes

The Old City of Jerusalem is a treasure trove of holy sites for three religions and numerous ethnic groups. A walk in the Old City is pure eye candy from the trinkets in the open air markets to the garb worn by the very mixed local population.

Besides at least one day of guided touring, leave a day to wander the alleys and cobblestoned streets, camera in hand.
