During Lent, the children of our parish collected coins for the Missions. They collected a total of $1,075 that was donated to purchase much needed supplies and medicine. However, the greatest gift is that of caring and the time the children spent col-lecting the donations.

Last weekend we wrote about the history of the Salve Regina. This weekend in addition to the Salve Regina as our Post Communion meditation, we are singing the English translation, Hail Holy Queen

This version, which is #205 in our hymnal, is the one most Catholics are familiar with and is attrib-uted to Melchior Ludwig Herold, who was born in 1753 in Germany. Very little has been written about him, but this English translation has been used since the 18th century.

The hymn has not been limited to church use, and has found its way into our popular culture. For example, the words of the first verse of the Salve Regina were used as a repeating theme in the song, Oh What a Circus in the musical Evita. In 1992 a rock infused version of Hail Holy Queen is featured in the movie Sister Act starring Whoopi Goldberg, which later became a Broadway show with the same title.

This hymn is said to be a favorite of our Lady her-self by testimony of those who have reportedly seen her in visions. One account concerning this claim relates a vision St Dominic had. He was en-tering a corridor of the monastery to resume his midnight prayer vigil when he chanced to raise his eyes and see three beautiful ladies approach him. He knelt before the principal lady and she blessed him. Even though St Dominic recognized her, he begged her to tell him her name. The Lady re-plied: "I am she whom you invoke every evening: and when you say, 'Turn then, most gracious Ad-vocate, thine eyes of Mercy toward us,' I prostrate myself before my Son, entreating Him to protect this Order."

PARKING PERMITS A Parking Permit (the Blue Static Cling Window Decal) will soon be required for use of the church parking lot (Manville Road & Tompkins Avenue) for the 5:15pm Mass on Saturday and Sunday evenings only. If you attend these specific Masses and park in the lot please stop by the parish office Monday-Friday from 9:00am-3:00pm to pick up a Parking Permit Decal.

We are very grateful to Mr. Gerry Roggemann, their catechists and priests of our parish, and also to their parents for guiding the children to their very special encounter with Jesus.
