PASTOR’S NOTE

I recently came across a quote in The Nation from Marcel Duchamp, French modern artist that seems to touch on our relationship to the Gospel—an association that might have shocked Duchamp himself! His dictum in regard to art: “The viewer completes the work.” As it curiously applies to art appreciation and it also made me thank of a Scripture quote. Paul in Colossians 1:24 speaks of “making up for what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ.” What could possible be lacking in the sufferings of Christ? Nothing...except their application in the lives of His followers. That’s us! As a work of art is completed in its viewing, so the Paschal Mystery (Jesus’ Death and Resurrection) is made complete when we live it. A work of art can transform a person’s life. Even more so the definitive act of divine love and mercy in Jesus can change us and this weary world.

The young Sioux poet above dreams of a world where goodness and justice abound. He ends with the cynical rejoinder about reality coming first, crowding out the dream as it were. For us REALITY is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, capable of transforming our own jaded views of the real world around us into hope. The salvation of Jesus is poured out in an ocean of forgiveness and the Divine Mercy shows itself most beautifully in making us over into true good and beautiful men and women—saints in other words. It is what our Eastern brothers and sisters call the grace of “divinization”—making us like unto God Himself. As the early Church Father Tertullian wrote: “The glory of God is a human being fully alive!”

Neverending dream where life ends— where people live in perfect harmony where color is not wrong where we can walk and sing without laughter of putdowns where someone greets you with words of joy where loneliness and inequality become a speck of dirt in the winds of the past— But reality must come first.

The Music Ministry wishes to congratulate the members of our Junior Choir who are receiving their First Holy Communion this weekend and next. Our congratulations to Keira Borello, Sofia Hukkanen, and Cecilia LaMagna, daughter of our bass player, Robert and wife Niki. We are very proud of you!

The music for our liturgies this weekend will share some of the same hymns used at the Communion ceremonies to show our love and support of our parish children and to help them remember their special day.

As we sing together as a parish community, let us pray that this wonderful sacrament will bring all of our first communicants closer to our Lord!

Congratulations to all and we welcome you to the table of the Lord!

A SPECIAL “THANK YOU” FROM FR. BILL VOS

On behalf of the Benedictine Sisters of St. Agnes, I wish to express my gratitude for the wonderful experience I had at Holy Innocents this past weekend. It was simply a joy for me to be the homilist at each Mass. The hospitality and enthusiasm you extended to me, starting of course with the Friars but also from all whom I met to pray and celebrate with, was just marvelous. What a blessing! In particular, I offer my sincere thanks on behalf of the Sisters for your financial support to sustain them and their ministries.

To stay informed on what’s happening with this community go to chipolebenedictines.org.

Blessings, Fr. Bill Vos
