Evangelization 101: The Church’s furnace

In the Diocese of Portland, only roughly 20 to 30% of Catholics attend Mass on a regular basis. In addition to this gloomy statistic, the number of people attending Mass at various churches in the Diocese continues to drop. This means that many people currently in our pews are soon to be part of the next group of inactive

Catholics. This is not good news. It’s easy to blame the outside world and high school sports schedules for drawing people away. The fact is that there is also something wrong “in house.” Jesus’ sheep have always been ripe for the taking.

The fact the Catholics are so easily snatched from the Church means that many of our brothers and sisters have not been en-gaged in the life of the Church. Their relationship with Jesus isn’t solid, and they’ve never truly experienced the splendor and joy of being Catholic. Our declining numbers tell us something important about ourselves-that we as a Catholic community have become lukewarm. We’ve stopped giving off the spiritual heat that would naturally attract people to us.

The good news is this-the Church herself is never lukewarm. At the heart of the Church is something that is like a blazing furnace-the love that burns for us in the heart of Jesus who is made present for us in the Eucharist. The problem is that large parts of our parish community-and even ourselves-aren’t always adequately connected to the source of heat. Even if we regularly attend Mass and are active in the parish, interiorly we might still lack a deep personal connection with Christ. This happens as the result of a number of things: lack of a regular prayer life, infrequent confession (75% of practicing Catholics go once a year or never), a slowness in addressing personal sin and spiritual blockages, turning a blind eye to sin and shrinking from proclaiming the fullness of the Gospel-particularly the hard teachings of the Church. These things deaden the lives and souls of individuals and parishes.

If we want to revive our parish, stop declining Mass attendance, and bring inactive Catholics back home, we must first reverse these tendencies in ourselves and in our parish community. The things that fire up Christ’s love in us are the same things we must cultivate in our parish: a culture of personal prayer, frequent reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) to unblock our spiritual arteries, and embracing the transforming power of the Church’s teachings, especially the more radical ones. Above all, remembering that the Church’s primary source of spiritual heat is the Eucharist, we must cultivate more beauty and reverence in the Mass-resisting the urge to become complacent in our manner of celebrating the Eucharist-and help our people discover per-sonally the love the Jesus in the Eucharist has for each and every one-a love available to us in every tabernacle and on every altar.

We don’t have to reinvent the wheel. We have the warming fire of charity in the Eucharist-the heart of the Church. Our task is to simply do the necessary work to allow ourselves and others to tap into that source of warm and allow Jesus to set us on fire for him once again. Peace! Fr. Aaron
