Meredith Fraschi
Middle School Faith Formation
Fellow Parishioners:
What a great time to write about coming on
board with the Faith Formation here at Holy Family
Parish! The readings from last week and this both
explain everything that needs to be said. Last week,
Samuel was called by the Lord. Disciples of John the
Baptist (a familiar name!) began to follow Jesus and
were put to work by him. This week Jesus actively
began to call Apostles to Him, and in the Old
Testament Jonah (finally) answered God’s call and
went about His work. Which of our lives is so different?
I am proudly a cradle Catholic, raised and
educated at St. Bartholomew (another Apostle) in Penn
Hills, by parents who are now among the saints. Our
lives were always revolving around the Church. We
were instilled from the beginning with a love of God and
His Church. The desire to know Him better, as well as
to know about Him and His family is strong. The
renaming of our parishes after the Holy Family is a
strong reminder of our first contact with God and our
first teachers in faith.
I have been blessed with a Proverbs 31 wife,
named Vicki, and four remarkable children (now all
adults). Our choice of where to live was influenced by
the ability to be able to walk to church. We have been
members here since 1979, and were quickly introduced
to volunteering. I started here with the cantor program,
and expanded that to Eucharistic Minister, Lector,
Usher and Catechist, not to mention the festival and
odd jobs around the parish, such as the first
Octoberfest organized by Father George, and moving
pews when St. Irenaeus was remodeled.
The time spent as a catechist, (about 2
decades or so) has been among the most rewarding. It
has taught me more about the richness of our faith than
any class I signed up for. It was a very natural
transition for me to join the Faith Formation team with
Steph Williams and Meredith Fraschi. The more I learn
about God, and His limitless love for us, the more I
wish to know and share. My parents did their best to
keep us humble, but nothing expresses that as well as
the prayer we found in my father’s prayer journal after
he passed away. “Dear God, I pray for the gifts of
Wisdom and Love! Patience and Kindness,
Gentleness and Tenderness, and Living, Laughing and
Loving for Others! Help me to be Non-Critical and Non-
Judgmental of Others! And for the Graces received . . .
I give Thanks!”
Thank you for entrusting your children with me
and the Faith Formation Team and our selfless
catechists! Please pray for me that I may live up to the
calling and for the wisdom to direct them in right paths!
With Love and Prayers,
Bob Federline

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
READING I JON 3:1-5, 10
The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying: “Set out for the
great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I
will tell you.” So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh,
according to the Lord’s bidding. Now Nineveh was an
enormously large city; it took three days to go through it.
Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a
single day’s walk announcing, “Forty days more and Nineveh
shall be destroyed, “when the people of Nineveh believed
God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small,
put on sackcloth.
When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil
way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to
them; he did not carry it out.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9
R. Teach me Your ways, O Lord.
Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me Your paths,
guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my savior.
R. Teach me Your ways, O Lord.
Remember that Your compassion, O Lord, and Your love are
from of old. In Your kindness remember me, because of Your
goodness, O Lord.
R. Teach me Your ways, O Lord.
Good and upright is the Lord; thus He shows sinners the way. He
guides the humble to justice and teaches the humble His way.
R. Teach me Your ways, O Lord.
READING 2 1 COR 7:29-31
I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out.
From now on, let those having wives act as not having them,
those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing,
those buying as not owning, those using the world as not using it
fully. For the world in its present form is passing away.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. MK 1:15
The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the
Gospel.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL MK 1:14-20
After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee
proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment.
The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the
gospel.” As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon
and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea;
they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me,
and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned
their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther
and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called
them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with
the hired men and followed him.
COMO SENTIR LA PRESENCIA DE DIOS EN TU VIDA
(primera parte)
¿Cómo podemos comenzar a conec-

Join Holy Family Parish for a special at-home retreat -
33 Days to Greater Glory – a retreat with Father Michael Gaitley
Father Michael Gaitley, author of the popular 33 Days to Morning Glory has finished his third
book, 33 DAYS TO GREATER GLORY: A TOTAL CONSECRATION TO THE FATHER
THROUGH JESUS BASED ON THE GOSPEL OF JOHN. Our Parish has arranged a
discounted bulk rate of this book for us to hold another at-home retreat during Lent,
beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 17 and ending on Palm Sunday, March 28. Each
day involves a reflection reading from the book and a consecration on the concluding day that we will have at our weekend
Masses on Palm Sunday. The book also includes a nine (9) day consecration to St. Joseph. In addition, Father Nathaniel
Polinski, OSB, one of the popular guest Benedictine priests for Masses in Plum, recently authored an academic book, That the
Scriptures Might Be Fulfilled through Perfect Worship. Father Nathaniel will share a presentation from his scholarly work on
Palm Sunday afternoon. The title of his presentation will be “Diving More Deeply into the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ ac-
cording to John.” Parishioners, especially those who have completed the 33 Days to Greater Glory retreat, are invited to attend
in person at St. John the Baptist Church or via livestream. Sign-up now to reserve your copy of 33 Days to Greater Glory. You
can fill out the form below, call the parish office or email Karen Deemer at [email protected]. Please indicate at which
church you would prefer pick up the book.
Please place _____________ copies of 33 Days to Great Glory on reserve.

para cultivar una relación con Dios es
enfocarse en apreciar todo lo que Él ha
hecho por nosotros. La próxima vez que
encuentres algo que has estado buscando,
muestra tu apreciación agradeciéndole a
Dios.
contigo. A través de estas experiencias
podemos afinar nuestra percepción sobre la
intervención personal de Dios, Su presencia
constante y Su amor y preocupación por
nosotros.

Beautifying Our Sanctuaries
Holy Family Parish Art and Environment committee has been
working on ways to beautify our churches. Many of our churches
use live plants in their sanctuaries. Over time these plants begin
to look tired and need replaced. If you would like to donate in
honor of your family or in memory of a loved one, please send a
donation made payable to “Holy Family Parish” to the attention of
“Joyce Doyle - Sanctuary Plants.” Please indicate the church
and how the donation should be acknowledged in the bulletin.
We will use the money to purchase plants that are tolerant to the

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The Holy Family 31 Club
Supporting Future Vocations in Holy Family Parish
Would you be willing to dedicate prayer time one day of each month for vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and
religious life in Holy Family Parish? If so, The 31 Club wants you!
What: The 31 Club is a way for parishioners prayerfully to help in the vocations effort at the parish level.
When: No meetings, just sign up for one day a month.
Who: Open to all parishioners including those that are homebound and wish to offer their sufferings.
How it works:
-Sign a pledge form (below) to pray one day of the month (that you have chosen).
-Choose a type of prayer.
-Examples are: Mass, Rosary, Holy Hour before Blessed Sacrament, Divine Mercy Chaplet or some form of fasting,
abstaining, sacrifice, offering of suffering.
Goal: The 31 Club is to have dedicated prayer all possible 31 days of each month.
Prayer is talking to God. Through prayer we deepen our friendship with Jesus. Through prayer we deepen our
understanding of God’s plan for our life. Through prayer we deepen our appreciation for how much God loves us. Through
prayer we strengthen our spiritual lives so that we, through the grace of God, change ourselves. In seeking God’s call for
our lives, prayer helps us to choose and live our vocation.
Simple prayer: Lord, help me to live my vocation and pray for those called to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life.
The 31 Club Pledge
I,____________________________________________________________(printed name), pledge to offer one day a

PRAYER WARRIORS STILL NEEDED FOR 31 CLUB
The response to the announcement of the 31 Club seeking prayer warriors for supporting future

Warriors are needed for the following days of each month:
15, 16, 18, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28. Would you consider pledging to one day a month?
If you can commit to one of these days each month for a year, please fill out the “Pledge Slip” (below) and
return it to one of the Church offices or the white contribution baskets in any of the churches. Thank you.
