Meals on Wheels - St Mary’s at Your Service

At St Mary’s we have again embraced an exciting venture to help others as a part of our Catholic

mission – Meals on Wheels. We are extremely fortunate that our Year 6 students have secured a

permanent monthly position delivering meals to people in need within our local community.

Once every month we will be taking children out and about to be involved in this social justice

experience. This is a wonderful connection between our Catholic gospel values and how we live this

out in our community by reaching out to others. It is a great opportunity for our students to make a

difference to their world around them.

It has been amazing to witness the interactions between our students and the elderly people during

visits, chatting about everything from the weather to what they experienced when they attended

school.

History Box Incursion

This term our children have been learning about events that have shaped our Australian history. To

compliment their history units, we welcomed back Barry and Cynda, who run The History Box

Incursions program. The History Box conducts onsite history programs complete with very engaging

“hands-on” activities that teach children a great deal about the past as they participate in the program.

Year 4 Echuca Camp

The Year 4 students, teachers and helpers headed off to Echuca on 15th June for 3 days of fun-filled

activities. They went on the paddle steamers, visited a zoo and the highlight was going on the

trampolines and slides at The Gravity Shack.

GRIP Leadership Camp

On Friday May 3rd, St Mary’s Sea Lake Grade 6

students were lucky enough to participate in the

2019 GRIP Leadership conference at the Bendigo

stadium. We completed four different sessions on

core strengths, making a difference to my team,

culture within my school and making a difference

to a cause in society. The day taught us how to

understand the proper qualities of a true leader.

‘It was a fantastic experience that taught

us about generosity, responsibility,

integrity and interacting with people.’

Celebrating Open Day

It was wonderful to show case our school to

the community on Friday 7th May. We had a

lovely morning with the Kinder children

visiting and participating in activities with our

classes. Thank you to Sandra, Carol, Danielle

and Bailee and the Kinder children for

supporting our day.

Cluster Cross Country

On Wednesday 8th May, Grade 3-6 students

competed in the Cluster Cross Country at the

Complex. We had great success with 19

students making the regional level in Swan Hill.

Congratulations to all students on your fantastic

effort.

On Friday 10th May we all wore a splash of blue in honour of

Dolly. Do It For Dolly is about raising awareness and money

to stop bullying around Australia, so other kids don’t take

their lives like Dolly did.

We raised $62.00 for the Do It For Dolly Foundation.

Well done Team St Marys.

Mothers Day

On Friday 10th May we celebrated Mothers Day

with a liturgy followed by morning tea. It was

great having all of the Mums and special friends at

school. All Mothers and special friends received a

pink carnation from the children. We all then

enjoyed our yummy cake.

PJASS Pilgrimage

In May, four of our Year 10 students participated in a pilgrimage from Melbourne to Penola. The

students spoke highly of the journey, reflecting that ‘overall we met new people, new friends and defined

a clear relationship with Mary MacKillop. Today her legacy is an important one as it serves much of our

school’s identity and is an inspiration to achieve our goal of a passion for learning. Being a part of the

AJASS pilgrimage was an absolute privilege. It felt great to be in the spirit of Mary MacKillop, as it felt like

she was right there with us as we walked in the very places she walked through many years ago. Mary

MacKillop is the reason our school is standing today and we should feel proud to be a part of this. ’

Top Marks for Tahlia

On Monday 3rd June, Tahlia was awarded a Premier’s VCE

Award for obtaining a perfect study score of 50 for VCE VET

Sport and Recreation in 2018. Tahlia is pictured receiving her

award from the Deputy Premier, Mr James Merlino.

Obtaining a perfect score in any VCE subject is an outstanding

academic achievement and Tahlia is to be congratulated for

her dedication, hard work and enthusiasm towards her

studies.

Murray River Culinary Challenge

The Murray River Culinary Challenge

inter-school competition was held on

Wednesday 5th June. VET Hospitality

students were set the task of cooking three courses within a set amount of time.

Students were judged by local chefs on

their workflow, cooking techniques and

presentation. Thy Pham-Nguyen and Kate

Gillingham were the winners and now make up the St Mary MacKillop College

team who will compete against the Swan

Hill College team in August.

Transition Day 1

Grade 6 students from Swan Hill and district schools attended our first Transition Day in May. Approximately 140

students attended, which was fantastic to see. Students enjoyed a tour of the school, before experiencing a timetable

of different subjects including; Science, Food Technology, Woodwork, Japanese, Drama and Physical Education. At

recess the students were treated to muffins made by the first year Hospitality students, and at lunchtime a BBQ lunch

was provided. Students then participated in fun lunchtime activities, including rock painting in the library. The Grade

6 students enjoyed the day, meeting new friends and staff as well as familiarising themselves with life in a secondary

school setting. Students who have enrolled for Year 7 2020 will be invited to attend the second Transition Day on

Thursday 30th July 2019.

2020 Enrolments now being accepted

With a wonderful turnout on Transition Day, our expectation is that our enrolments will increase at Year 7

in 2020. Please do not miss out on a place as, depending on applications, we may need a waiting list. Enrolments for Year 7, 2020 close on Monday 15th July, the first day of Term 3.

If you know of any interested families or students for year levels other than Year 7, please encourage them

to apply as soon as possible, as we have limited places available at some year levels.

Wicked Tickets now on sale!

St Mary MacKillop College is excited to announce our 2019 production of Wicked: The Untold Story of the

Witches of Oz! The show will run on Thursday 15th August and Friday 16th August at 7:00pm at our Jubilee

Centre in Splatt Street.

When Dorothy famously triumphed over the Wicked Witch, we only ever heard one side of the story. WICKED

tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two young women who first

meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda (played by Charlotte Rush)

and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba (played by Phoebe Griffiths and Kate Mullan). Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (played by Jethro Edullantes and Harrison Sawyer), their

friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unflinching desire for

popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those

around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. Their extraordinary adventures

in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased through the Front Office. Phone: 03 5032 9771.

On May 29th our three Parish Schools came together to celebrate mass at St Mary’s Primary School, Swan Hill as part of Catholic Education Week Celebrations, with a shared lunch and fun activities afterward. The theme this year was ‘Listen With the Ear of Your Heart.’ Fr Matt challenged everyone to really listen with our heart and be people of love and compassion towards one another. It was lovely to have all staff and students within the Holy Family Parish, as well as parents, grandparents, friends and parishioners come together to share this wonderful celebration. Listen With the Ear of Your Heart

Benedict of Nursia

With the occasion of Catholic Education Week, it is fitting that we remind ourselves of who we are as a Catholic School Community and what makes us so important and special. Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of individuals and in the wider community by challenging young people, through God, to find meaning and value in their lives and reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of our community. Catholic schools are welcoming and compassionate, learning and living by the Gospel values everyday. Jesus Christ is our role model and inspiration as we strive to become the great people He created us to be.

Nandaly’s Biggest Morning Tea

With the May weather being kind and the

invitations sent out, people started to arrive

to once again enjoy Nandaly’s hospitality.

The Nandaly ladies worked hard during the

week to set up the hall - Jo Brady had the

stage looking great with her ‘home with

rooms’ theme. The ladies that did the scones

were on deck with the baskets of scones

being distributed to the tables with the jam

and cream or butter as preferred.

The cakes stall was laden with a variety of

goodies, as only the country folk can make,

and as expected, they sold like hot cakes.

Plants by Bernie Kiley did a roaring trade and

the fancy goods were a great hit.

A total of 78 persons attended and enjoyed

the entertainment supplied by Alyis Scougall

and her squeezebox and a good day was had

by all. A wonderful total of $4 821.05 was

raised, which included a donation from Tom

Elliott as the profit book.

God our Father,

Through the intercession of the Holy Family our patron,

we pray that You bless this parish so that we may love

You more.

Help parents to be a good example to their children

and our youth to grow in strength as good Christians.

Encircle our families with Your loving care; to the sick and

the weak grant health;

to the aged bring serenity; and to those in sorrow joy.

May we grow stronger in faith and may our love for one

another become deeper in our daily life.

Amen.
