The Fifth Sunday in Lent
March 13, 2016, 9:15am
Holy Eucharist Rite II
There in box of alabaster,
bearing nard of fragrance pure,
she with gift of outpoured sweetness
bids the mystic sign endure:
seeking from anointment healing,
lo, the sick anoints the Cure!
Dearly then for that dear offering
did our Lord in love repay:
since so perfect her devotion,
all her sins he put away:
made her be his own forerunner
on his Resurrection day.
Now be glory, laud and honor
unto him the Paschal Host,
who, in war with Death a Lion,
as a Lamb gave up the ghost,
and the third day rose a Victor
crowned with spoils that Death had lost.
~ Philippe de Grève (ca. 1160 - 1236)

The Fifth Sunday in Lent9:15am The Holy Eucharist Rite II
March 13, 2016
Order of Service Opening AcclamationAt the sound of the bell, please stand as you are able.
Celebrant Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. People His mercy endures for ever.
At the sound of the bell, the ministers will process in silence.
A Ritual of ReconciliationCelebrant Jesus said, “The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Let us pray.
Have mercy on us, O God, according to your never-ending love;People According to your abundant mercy blot out our sins.
Celebrant For we know our transgressions, and our sin is ever before our eyes.People Against you only have we sinned, and done what is evil in your sight.
Celebrant You desire truth in all our hearts; teach us your wisdom.People Create in us a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within us.
Celebrant Do not cast us away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from us.People Restore to us the joy of your salvation, and give us the spirit and will to do what is right.
Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.
People Amen.

The Collect of the DayCelebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. People Amen.

The Liturgy of the WordThe First Reading Isaiah 43:16-21Please be seated.
Reader A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah.
God, who carved a path for us to walk through the sea, who saved us from the chariots and horses and all the warriors and armies, says this to us, “Don’t get stuck on the way things were. Don’t rehearse them over and over again in your head. I am about to do something completely new. It’s happening all around you. Can you see it? I am making roads in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The animals who run wild will bow down to me—even the ostriches and the coyotes. I give my people in the desert water to drink. They are people I formed for myself, so that I might hear their praise.”
The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.
Gospel AcclamationPlease stand as you are able.
Wonder, Love, and Praise Hymnal 825 Words: Psalm 103 Music: Jacques Berthier (1923-1994)
The Holy Gospel John 12:1-8
Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Deacon Six days before the Passover, Jesus and his disciples were in Bethany, where Lazarus and his sisters lived. (Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead, remember?) Martha put on a lovely dinner for them. After supper, Mary brought out some very expensive perfumed oil and
6
massaged Jesus’ feet with it. Then she wiped them dry with her hair. The whole house was full of the fragrance. Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples, the one who was going to betray Jesus to the authorities, ruined the moment by saying, “I can’t believe you didn’t sell this perfume and give the money to the poor.” It’s not like Judas cared at all about the poor. He said that because he was a thief. He was the treasurer of the disciples and used to steal from the money they had set aside.
Jesus said, “Back off. Leave her alone. She honors me with this beautiful perfume and her care of me. She bought that perfume to prepare me for my burial. You always have the opportunity to help poor people. You won’t always have me here with you in the flesh.”
The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.
The Sermon The Rev. Dr. Mark Francisco Bozzuti-Jones
Silence follows the sermon.
The Nicene CreedPlease stand as you are able.
All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
7
who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Prayers of the PeoplePlease stand as you are able.
Reader Jesus, remember us when you come into your kingdom. Hear us as we pray:
For your church around the world,People we ask new life.
Reader For all who carry out ministries in your church, People we ask grace and wisdom.
Reader For people who have accepted spiritual disciplines,People we ask inspired discipleship.
Reader For Christians of every land, People we ask new unity in your name.
Reader For Jews and Muslims and people of other faiths, People we ask your divine blessing.
Reader For those who cannot believe, People we ask your faithful love.
Reader For governors and rulers in every land, People we ask your guidance.
Reader For people who suffer and sorrow, People we ask your healing peace.
Reader For family, friends, and those who are no longer with us, People we ask that your loving arms embrace them.
After a brief silence, the leader concludes the prayers, saying:
Celebrant Holy God, your Word, Jesus Christ, spoke peace to a sinful world and brought humanity the gift of reconciliation by the suffering and death he endured. Teach us who bear his name to follow the example he gave us. May our faith, hope, and charity turn hatred to love, conflict to peace, and death to eternal life; through Christ our Lord. All Amen.

10
Celebrant Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.
On the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever.
All Amen.
Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen
FractionThe Celebrant breaks the bread.
Celebrant Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God.
All who hunger for God are cordially invited to this table, including children. You may consume the bread and then drink from the chalice (please grasp the bottom of the chalice to guide it to your lips). Also, you may dip the bread in the wine and then consume it, or you may leave the bread in your palm for the chalice-bearer to dip in the wine and place on your tongue. Gluten-free wafers are available; please indicate to the priest that you require this alternative. Those who do not wish to receive communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. The ushers will guide you.

we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the
risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.
