The First Reading Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15

Reader A Reading from the Book of Exodus.

The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have

brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not.”

Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, ‘Draw near to the LORD, for he has heard your complaining.’” And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. The LORD spoke to Moses and said, “I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the LORD your God.’”

In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.”

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 78:23-29

All So God commanded the clouds above * and opened the doors of heaven.

He rained down manna upon them to eat * and gave them grain from heaven.

So mortals ate the bread of angels; * he provided for them food enough.

He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens * and led out the south wind by his might.

He rained down flesh upon them like dust * and winged birds like the sand of the sea.

He let it fall in the midst of their camp * and round about their dwellings.

So they ate and were well filled, * for he gave them what they craved.

The Holy Gospel John 6:24-35

Please stand as you are able.

Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The next day, when the people who remained after the feeding of the five thousand saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon Eva Suarez

A brief silence follows the sermon.

The Nicene CreedPlease stand as you are able.

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

Page 6: Holy Eucharist Rite II St. Paul’s Chapel€¦ · He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens * and led out the south wind by his might. He rained down flesh upon them like dust

6

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Intercessor We have heard the Gospel proclaimed in our midst. Therefore let us join together, lifting our joys and concerns to God in prayer. Let the People of God say…

People O Lord, your love endures forever!

Intercessor We pray for the Church—the Body of Christ throughout the world. Let us give thanks for the faithful ministers who lead us onward in the Way of Jesus. Let the People of God say…

People O Lord, your love endures forever!

Intercessor May the wisdom and compassion of the Living God fill the leaders of the nations and all in authority, that peace may prevail upon the earth. Let the People of God say…

People O Lord, your love endures forever!

Intercessor You have given us the good Earth, your own creation. Grant us the strength and courage to be faithful stewards of its rich blessings. Let the People of God say…

People O Lord, your love endures forever!

Intercessor The Holy Spirit draws near to those who suffer in any way. We remember especially the concerns of this community, naming aloud those things which are in our hearts at this time.

The People may add their own intercessions aloud.

Let the People of God say…

People O Lord, your love endures forever!

Intercessor The breath of the Spirit breathes new life into all creation: Raise into your resurrection life those who have died, especially those we name now.

Page 7: Holy Eucharist Rite II St. Paul’s Chapel€¦ · He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens * and led out the south wind by his might. He rained down flesh upon them like dust

The People may add their own intercessions for those who have died.

Let the People of God say…

People O Lord, your love endures forever!

Confession of Sin and AbsolutionCelebrant Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, therefore let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

All Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving BCP 361, Eucharistic Prayer A

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of the week overcame death and the

Page 8: Holy Eucharist Rite II St. Paul’s Chapel€¦ · He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens * and led out the south wind by his might. He rained down flesh upon them like dust

8

grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Celebrant Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Celebrant We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

All Amen.

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

Page 9: Holy Eucharist Rite II St. Paul’s Chapel€¦ · He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens * and led out the south wind by his might. He rained down flesh upon them like dust

9

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

BULLETIN BOARDSchool Supply DriveBuy supplies through August 20Donate online through September 18More than 80,000 children enrolled in New York City schools were homeless at some point during the 2012-13 school year. These students and many others cannot afford to buy school supplies such as pencils, paper, and folders— which can lead to a scholastic disadvantage. To help them out, Trinity is collecting school supplies to go directly to children from low-income families. You can help by buying supplies, packing bags, and donating online. For more information, pick up a card at Trinity Church, St. Paul’s Chapel, or the Parish Center, go to trinitywallstreet.org/school-supplies, or contact Ariella Louie at [email protected].

Parish Center Open HoursThe Parish Center will be closed for a private event Friday, August 7.

Reconciliation Preaching PrizeSubmissions due August 1St. Paul’s Chapel was the site of an extraordinary ministry of healing and service following the events of 9/11. As part of this ongoing legacy, you’re invited to submit an original sermon that explores the theme of reconciliation in a contemporary context. The competition is open to people of all faiths; no ministry background required. One winner will be invited to preach their sermon at a special service on September 11. Interested in writing a story instead of a sermon? Enter the Songs and Stories of Reconciliation contest: submit a true, original story about reconciliation. Six winners will be chosen to tell their stories in front of a live audience on the evening of September 10 at St. Paul’s Chapel. Information, including details, terms, and conditions: trinitywallstreet.org/reconciliation.
