LUMEN GENTIUM AWARDThe Lumen Gentium awards are given every other year by Bishop Joe Vásquez in recogni-tion of service and faithfulness of Catholics throughout the Diocese of Austin. Recipients are nominated by their pastor or diocesan staff. The awards ceremony, which was scheduled for June 16, was canceled because of heavy rains. Therefore, pastors were asked to honor their nominees at their respective parishes.

We congratulate parishioners Tom & Rosa Maria Peña who were awarded this year’s Lu-men Gentium award. They have worked tirelessly for the building of His Kingdom at Santa Cruz Church.

Tom has been the lead usher for a number of years. He is a ‘behind-the-scenes’ person. He schedules and trains ushers. He makes sure the collection is secured and counted. He works hard to make sure Holy Day Masses are covered. Most people never see him but they sure would notice if all he does was not done. His sons have joined him in this ministry and we now have a second generation of ushers coming up. He is a blessing to Santa Cruz.

Aug. 15-16, 201520th Sunday in Ordinary TimeWhat a privilege it is that we have been invited to the banquet of eternal life and endless grace. Filled with the very life of God we can live as Paul rec-ommends: people filled with the Spirit, with grat-itude and joy. We can be people filled with wisdom rather than foolish-ness. But will people notice a difference during the week? Will others be touched by a deep sense of God’s life in us? What can we do this week to be living bread for the poor and those in greatest need since we have feasted at this heavenly banquet?

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION/EDUCACION RELIGIOSA: K-12 ~ YOUTH ~ ADULT RE & FAITH ENRICHMENT

RELIGIOUS ED (K-12TH GRADES)Coordinators: JoAnna Rubio & Delia Blanco

Back Pack & Teacher BlessingsReligious Education, Adult Faith Formation & the Youth Ministry would like to help you get ready for back to school! Next weekend at all the Masses we will have our annual Back Pack & Teacher Blessings! Please plan on attending any of the Masses and be blessed!

Reconciliation & First Communion Preparation - Traditionally chil-dren celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (First Confession) and First Communion in the second grade. For their preparation, children attend Religious Education for two years (1st grade & 2nd grade). The first year is traditionally 1st grade and the second, 2nd grade, is continued preparation for the sacraments and the celebration. Older children who have not celebrated the sacraments and need to prepare participate in the RCIA for Children Program. Register for Religious Education to get your child ready to celebrate the sacraments.

Confirmation - A minimum of two years, traditionally 8th grade and 9th grade, of formal religious education in a parish precedes the Confirmation Preparation Program at Santa Cruz. Students who attend their 8th and 9th grade years will enter into the Confirmation Preparation Program in their 10th grade year. If a student did not attend 8th grade, the DRE / High School RE Coordinator will work with parents to place the child in appropriate classes. These guidelines are in accordance with the Diocese of Austin. Register for Religious Education to get your child ready to celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation.

SANTA CRUZ CATHOLIC SCHOOL/ESCUELA CATOLICA

News from the Principal’s DeskSanta Cruz Catholic School teachers and staff spent a busy week pre-paring for our new school year. The week was filled with classroom organizing, curriculum workshops and planning, safety courses, and a writing and technology in-service.

We also welcomed a new kindergarten teacher to our school. Sta-cey Graham has joined our staff replacing Caitlin Brejcha who took a position with Hays CISD. Stacey comes to us with nineteen years of experience in the lower elementary grades. She is also a dyslexia teacher. We are thrilled that she chose to join our expanding staff.

Students begin classes on Wednesday, August 12th. On Monday, all of the Catholic schools in our diocese will come together at St. Helen’s in Georgetown for a beginning of the year Mass and luncheon. Bishop Vasquez and Bishop Garcia will be our celebrants. What a wonderful way to begin the new year!

Have a blessed week,Mrs. Flanagan

Non-Discrimination PolicySchools within the Diocese of Austin do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin in: (i) the admission of stu-dents; (ii) the offerings of rights, privileges, programs, or activities generally made available to their students; or (iii) the administration of educational policies, admissions policies, loan programs, athletic programs, employment practices or policies, or other school-admin-istered programs.

Bendiciones,Sra. Flanagan

The Santa Cruz Catholic School Advisory Board has openings for two new members. The Advisory Board meets every other month on the fourth Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The School Advisory Board (SAB) acts in an advisory capacity to the Pastor. It formulates and evaluates polices for the parochial school and works to provide the atmosphere that will enable the school to reach its goals. CHURCH ORGANIZATIONS / ORGANIZACIONES PARROQUIALES

COME AND SEE!Are you, or do you know anyone, who has not yet been baptized or was baptized in another Christian faith? Ever wondered why Catholics bless themselves with the sign of the cross, what they believe about communion, what’s up with all those saints and statues, and rosaries, and standing, sitting, and kneeling, why does Mary seem so important? Well, why not come and see and come and learn?

This year’s RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Program begins on Thursday, Sep-tember 10. There is no cost, no obligation and no commitment necessary. In a series of friendly, informative and spiritually exciting classes we will explore the major things Catholics believe and why. We will learn more about the Mass and what is happening and why. Learn about prayer, scripture, sacraments, and Church history, and much more.

Are you Catholic and interested in learning more about your faith? Would you be willing to be part of this program, to be part of a faith community willing to journey with and support those interested in learning more about our faith? Now may be the moment that God is calling you to be part of an exciting ministry.

So, if you are currently a non-Catholic wanting to learn more about Catholicism, or a Catho-lic willing to be part of an exciting ministry, please call Sandy Dodson at (512) 213-4554 or Deacon John Kerrigan at (214) 886-8239. You may also email Deacon John at [email protected].

God may be calling you… Listen, pray and come and see!
