Good People of Holy Cross, Our Catholic faith teaches the presence of Jesus on earth/ Our Catholic Church is a flawed, imperfect human institution. Which of these two statements is true? Or what about: Human beings are fundamentally sinful creatures/ Human beings are made in the image and likeness of God. Or: Jesus was fully human/ Jesus was fully divine. Of course this last pair gives it away, because Jesus, we believe, was fully human and fully divine. Jesus was both, at the same time, however difficult that’s always been for us to understand. We tend to be “either/or” thinkers. We want things one way or the other. Simple. Black and white, but the mystery of God calls us to paradox; to see that in matters of faith opposite things can be true, and usually are. Christianity is the great faith “of and”, not of “either/or.” This helps as we bump up against other Christians. We believe that Catholicism contains the fullness of truth. Our Protestant friends are faithful people living the truth. How can both these things be true? What about our relationship, to Hinduism and Buddhism and Islam? Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, that’s what we believe. Absolutely. But at the same time, our Church has consistently taught that “elements of sanctification” exist in other traditions and they are to be treated with open-mindedness and regard. How can that be? Jesus is the way and there are other ways? Yes. Exactly. It’s a paradox, it’s a tension. Theologian Laurence Freeman, a monk, puts it this way, “now more than ever we must humbly acknowledge and accept the paradox of being a Christian in the world, the paradox of being committed and rooted in a particular faith while being also respectful and truly open to the truths of other faiths.” I love this. Its directness, its practicality. This is just the way life is, Freeman is saying, and we just have to get used to it. We can’t solve it, we can’t fix it, and we don’t have to! Por supuesto, esta última pareja lo revela, porque creemos que Jesús era completamente humano y completamente divino. Jesús era ambos, al mismo tiempo, por difícil que siempre haya sido para que nosotros lo entendamos. Tendemos a pensar "o lo uno o lo otro". Queremos las cosas de una manera u otra. El teólogo Laurence Freeman, un monje, lo expresa de esta manera: “Ahora más que nunca debemos reconocer y aceptar con humildad la paradoja de ser un cristiano en el mundo, la paradoja de estar comprometido y enraizado en una fe particular, al mismo tiempo que somos respetuosos y sinceros, abiertos a las verdades de otras religiones". This year the theme of the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is “Go, there-fore, and make disciples.” One way we can show our love to our brothers and sisters in faith is to generously respond to the Archbish-op’s request for a pledge to the 2019 Appeal. Through your generous gifts, we can continue the work we were called to do as Christians:

educate our seminarians, support our retired priests, provide catechesis to our children and protect the rights of the unborn. Please be prepared next weekend to make a pledge to the 2019 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. For more information, or to donate online, go to appeal.archatl.com.

Holy Cross, High School Senior Youth of the Year Nomination

The Atlanta Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Woman each year recognize one high school senior from each parish that have put in those extra hours to carry out God’s work in their church and in their community, as well as academically. Holy Cross will be accepting nominations from our parish community until February 24th. To nominate a high school senior who has a good academic record, please submit their name and a letter of recommendation stating how they have been involved in the parish and community to: Barb Garvin, Director of Faith Formation. Nominations may be submitted by email at bgarvin@holycrossatlanta.org or delivered to the Faith Formation Office. No nomination will be accepted after February 24, 2019

Altar Flowers: The altar flowers may be given in memory or honor of loved ones or special occasions, such as anniversaries and birthdays. To schedule your altar flower intentions, please call Martha Murphy at 770-934-1464.

Votive Candles: Celebrate the life of family or friends with a Votive Candle. Votive candles burn brightly night and day as expressions of prayer for special intentions. At Holy Cross, the bottom rows (the smaller candles) are lit for a love offering. Simply deposit your offering and push button. Contact Yrene Lorenzo for a monthly or yearly intention.

Gluten-Free Hosts Gluten-free hosts are available upon request. Please call the parish office ahead of time if you would like to receive one.

Hearing-impaired devices Hearing-impaired devices are available at all weekend Masses. If you would like to use one, please visit the Welcome Desk or as an Usher.
