God is king, poet and lover. God is mountain and whirlwind, and all of them are partial and limited. We cant assume theres only one image of God. We cant assume that the nicest image is the best either. That s the underlying danger here, a sense that the best thing is always what feels good. That we should always be able to put our feet up and able to walk around in our PJs thinking to ourselves, alls well. Blessed are you who fear the Lord, the Psalmist says, and fearhere means respect. It means to be in awe of. Its like going to the Grand Canyon. Theres something really there, objectively out there, and it s so beautiful and so vast we naturally stop talking, and should. That s what God is and who God is: God is the Grand Canyon and Michelangelo and everything vast and beautiful rolled into one. The fact that this God becomes a child, is born into our world, walks in our world and reaches out to us and tells us to be not afraid, only makes God more magnificent and deserving of awe. That s why we dont have cup holders in the pews; why we dont eat popcorn during mass. IN & AROUND THE PARISH

Each year we welcome the names of your dear ones who have died and we remember them in our prayers and during a Novena of Masses offered for the Dead. We invite you to use the envelope for All Souls to enroll your deceased in this Novena: as well as for daily remembrance in our prayers. The time of All Souls Day and the month of November are essentially days for trust in the mercy and love of God, a remembrance of our dear ones gone ahead of us, and a sign of our own eternal destiny. As the Canon of the Mass puts it:

“To our departed brothers and sisters, and all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory, when you will wipe away every tear from our eyes. For seeing you, our God, as you are, we shall be like you for all the ages and praise you without end.”

Bereavement Mass will be November 18, 2019 at 7pm.

IN & AROUND THE PARISH

A Novena is a nine days

of focused prayer, private or

public, to obtain special

graces. While the number

eight in the Judeo-Christian

tradition was always thought

of as a festive number of new

beginnings, the number nine

seemed to be often linked

with suffering.

The heart of any Novena is the same as the first one,

called by our Lord Himself. "He commanded them not

to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of

the Father." (Acts 1:4, emphasis mine)

Nine day vigils were noted in Church history from

the third century onward. By the middle ages novenas

for the Pope and Cardinals were commonplace. Still

today, whenever we undertake a novena of prayer, we

are declaring that same supreme desire to wait for the

promise, persevering with confidence until the end.

Either as a public or personal observance, a novena

involves nine days of hopeful anticipation of an answer

for the petition or intention for which prayers are being

offered. Often a sense of urgency and earnestness

accompanies these times. they are also a wonderful

witness to a belief in the power of prayer and the

dynamic role of genuine faith.

When we pray a Novena, we either pray the same

prayer for all nine days or follow a list of prayers to be

prayed for each day. Every novena is a bit different in

the intention, formation of prayers and practice.

Parishes often offer a novena of Masses for the

departed or for a special intentions, such as Mother’s

and Father’s days, vocations to the priesthood and the

religious life, or leading up to the Feast of Our Lady of

Guadalupe.

With the traditional songs and the recitation of the

rosary on December 3 begins the novena in honor of the

Virgin of Guadalupe. This is organized by our

Guadalupe Ministry at Holy Cross, along with other

activities that precede the great celebration of

December 11 and 12. Everybody is invited!
