PASTOR ALICE WOLFE “Breakthrough Prayer”

God is so good! I am excited to see and hear all that

God is doing in and through the prayers and people of Christ UMC! Some of you are experiencing God’s pres-ence in a way you never have before. Some have started prayer walking at work each morning—and God is already changing the atmosphere for the better. Some are enjoy-ing a new boldness and vitality in their prayer life. And many are enjoying the power of prayer walking in and around the church and community. I can’t wait to see and hear about all the possibilities God will open and the mira-cles God will as a result of your prayers! Praise the Lord! If you missed one or more Sundays in January, let me give you a brief recap so you can join in our year of Break-through Prayer—A Year of Prayer and Possibilities! 1) God unleashes his power and presence in the world when we surrender and sacrifice ourselves to God on the altar of prayer. Therefore, we are asking EVERY-ONE at Christ UMC to commit to pray the following DAILY for Christ UMC:

a) The Holy Spirit’s breakthrough to renew and revive Christ UMC, unleashing new life! b) Every individual attending Christ UMC to be empowered with the contagious, miraculous message of Jesus. c) The Spirit to transform and use me boldly, without limits, to reach and make new disciples of Jesus Christ and heal people everywhere.

(Breakthrough Prayer cards are available at the Connec-tion Center. If you don’t already have one, please get one and put it in your Bible to remind you to pray daily.) 2) To talk is static. To walk is active. To PRAYER-WALK is dynamic. The legend of the Circle Maker tells of a man who drew a circle in the sand and refused to leave the circle until God answered his prayer for rain. We can-not demand that God answers our prayers, but we can and should commit to praying faithfully for and claim God’s

promises and all he calls us to do. We are encouraging everyone to write on post-it-notes the concerns and promises of God for which you are praying, and then place them on one of the prayer circles in the sanctuary. We, as the congregation, will then “circle” them and join with you in prayer for them. When God answers your prayers, please move the note to one of the An-swered Prayer boards—so we may rejoice and praise God with you! In the same way the Israelites circled and prayer-walked around Jericho, we are also encouraging people to prayer walk in and around the church—including all the prayers named in the prayer circles, the community, your homes, and your schools or places of work. We are also asking EVERY group in the church to begin or end their time prayer walking in or around the church for at least 5-10 minutes. We have another Breakthrough Prayer card with more details about prayer walking—please pick up your copy at the Connection Center so you may join in the joy and experience the presence and power of God in your prayer walking. 3) We would LOVE to hear your prayer testimonies or stories about how God is working in your life or the lives of the people/church for whom you are praying. Please let me know if you have a prayer story to share! 4) Please know that I am “circling” you in prayer. I sin-cerely thank God for calling me to serve and be part of this wonderful church family at Christ UMC! You are near and dear to my heart, and I hold you in my heart and prayers before God. If you have specific concerns or dreams that you would like to share with me, please let me know! 5) I would also appreciate your prayers—prayers that I will be for Christ UMC and the community who God wants me to be, and prayers that God will either heal me of my hypothyroidism or that the medicine will help me regulate my thyroid so it will not hinder God’s ministry. I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism in November and started taking medication on Thanksgiving Day. I wondered why I was so utterly exhausted all the time and having trouble thinking straight (more than normal! :-). I thought it was just because I am now a single parent pastor. As Paul prayed for the church in Ephesus, I pray for you:

I pray that the eyes of your heart will have enough light to see what is the hope of God’s call, what is the richness of God’s glorious inheritance among believers, and what is the overwhelming greatness of God’s power that is working among us believers… Ephesians 1:18-19 (CEB)

Fervently praying with you and for you!

KRISTY SCHOOLER Prayer Ministry “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the

Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

~Jeremiah 29:11

The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception.

~Proverbs 14:8

Some years ago, I purchased a devotional book called “God’s Abundance.” The devotions are written by many different Christians and contain many wonderful insights. I often pick it up and open it randomly to read a couple pages for inspiration. Quite a few pages are marked with colored paperclips, because they are messages I need to read/hear often. I’d like to share parts of one that has helped me keep my life from becoming impossibly busy (when I remember to actually do it!). It’s written by Jean Fleming.

She explains that on a finely-pruned tree, the trunk and limbs are prominent. The limbs grow out of our relation-ships with Christ and sprout many new branches each year. We must examine our trees and determine which branches need to be pruned back or hacked off at the base. Because life is always changing, our trees must undergo changes too.

The process she uses to prune her tree is stopping three or four times a year to spend half a day with the Lord to evaluate her life, examine her schedule, and set some new directions for the months ahead. She spends most of the time reading the Bible, praying, and singing to the

Lord. The quiet time acts like a knife to cut through the illusions and mirages of everyday life. It enables her to focus her attention, to set her heart on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. She sets her mind on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:1-2).

Then she lays out her tree before the Lord. She makes lists of current obligations, activities, and opportunities. And she prays, “At this point in my life, Lord, what is it you want me to do? What must I do to keep my relationship to You vital? What do You want me to say ‘yes’ and ‘no’ to?”

She reminds us that when she says ‘yes’ to something, it means she will be saying ’no’ to something else. Time is, after all, limited. For example, if she says yes to accepting a position on a church committee, it may end up crowding out her personal time with God, her time with her family, her preparation for Sunday school…

Looking at life her way helps her ensure that she doesn’t become too busy or fragmented to maintain her relation-ship to the Lord, to have vital family time, or to have a part in influencing the world for Christ.

Life is seasonal. There is a time and a season for every-thing (Ecclesiastes 3:1). No one can do everything at once. And we shouldn’t try. So the question becomes, at this point in our lives ~ what should we be doing according to God’s will for our lives? It takes some thought, focus, and prayer to be finely pruned trees.

Keep praying and praising, Kristy

Update CONSULTATION INITIATIVE Resource Refocusing Event:

On December 1, 2013, about twenty of our church leaders met with the Rev. Joseph Bishman for our Resource Re-focusing Event. Our primary task for the evening was to look at what we are currently doing as a church and then to identify the primary focus of each. We discovered that the vast majority of our ministries and activities (and therefore our resources) focus primarily on caring for the community (both within and outside the church); some had a primary focus on discipleship; and only one or two had part of their primary focus on reaching the un-churched and helping them become disciples of Jesus Christ. We discovered that while we are ministering to people in many ways, we need to be more intentional and strategic so that all of our ministries will help the un-churched become disciples of Jesus Christ.

Bishman suggested that as we move our focus toward the unchurched, every committee, ministry team, staff person, or volunteer planning any event, activity, or ministry should ask three questions to help us refocus our re-sources in living out God’s mission for us to make disci-ples of Jesus Christ:

1. How will non-members/unchurched be invited to this event?

2. How will they experience radical hospitality? 3. How will they be personally invited to return to anoth-

er event or activity (possible assimilation)?

Because the leaders who gathered on December 1 only had time to list and evaluate part of the activities and min-istries of Christ UMC, they will gather again the morning of Saturday, February 15, to complete the list and continue our conversation.

Next Steps:

In December, Joe Farmer, Kristy School, Mike Snider, and Pastor Alice met with Rev. Sue Nilson Kibbey, one of the leaders of the Missional Church Consultation Initiative to discuss and prayerfully discern our next steps in the pro-cess. Because we have not yet had the time or ability to put into place some necessary foundational pieces, we all felt God calling us to wait to have our consultation week-end sometime this fall (instead of this winter or spring as originally planned). Slowing the process down will help us make sure we have all the necessary pieces in place and allow us to make sure we are ready for the consultation weekend. Thank you for your prayers and help in this pro-cess! We will keep you posted of our progress, and we will be contacting you about opportunities for you to participate and share your thoughts, prayers, and dreams. Thank you for your continued prayers for Christ UMC—that we will truly be all God wants and is calling us to be to make disci-ples for Jesus Christ in Baltimore, Ohio, and around the world!

Would you like to be able to earn money to support and fund the ministries of Christ UMC without it coasting you anything? Well now you can! Every time you’ll shop online from the participating stores, you will help the church. Here are a few of the participating stores: Amazon.com, Macy’s, Expedia, Office Depot, Sears, Barnes & Noble, Overstock.com, Lowe’s, Staples, Old Navy, Marriott, Family Christian Store, Petsmart, Office Max, Dell, and hundreds more!

Go to http:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgebqiZYtpg to watch a video explaining UMCmarket and how it works.

How to get started:

Go to UMCmarket.org and Join by entering you email address and a password of your choice in the box down to the left.

Find your church:

Enter the name of your home church in the middle box. Type in “Christ,” then click Search. When a list of churches appears, click on “Baltimore Christ,” and then (when our address appears), click on “Join organiza-tion.”

Time to shop:

Browse through all our categories and choose to shop from our hundreds of stores. Every time you shop the stores will donate a portion of your purchase back to your home church. Make sure to log in before going to the stores and to have an empty shopping cart before you start to shop. Also, you need to complete your pur-chase within 24 hours to be eligible for a donation.

What stores are participating and how much do they give back?

Under the tab Stores you can search for stores in a lot of different categories. Next to every store you will see the percentage that they have agreed to pay back every time you make a purchase. Your micro-donations will automatically appear in your account for all stores except for AMAZON. Amazon purchases have to be claimed. About 2 to 7 days after your purchase you can usually claim it by going to MY PAGE on UMCMAR-KET.org and click on AMAZON CLAIMS. If the purchase was from a third party within Amazon it usually takes up to 7 days until you can claim it. Add the name of your item on the row with the corresponding price and your donation will soon be approved.

When will the church get the micro-donations I create?

Every time you have made a purchase you’ll get an email stating the amount of your micro-donation. Depend-ing on the store and if they have the item in stock or not, it can take up to 7 days for them to reply. Every month the church with a accumulated value from donations that have been approved of $100, it will roll-over to the next month until the accumulated amount reaches $100.

How is it possible?

We’ve partnered with hundreds of stores who’ve agreed to give back a portion of your purchases. It’s their way of saying “thank you” to UMC market for referring customers to them. The money that you get back goes automatically as a donation to the church that you’ve selected in you account.

Thank you for supporting your United Methodist Church!

We’re starting 2014 with several big catering events on our calendar. The first one is Saturday, February 22, the Fair-field County Cattlemen will have their Annual Banquet in the Family Life Center. This is a large group and we will need workers to help that day especially to plate and serve the meal, bus and wash dishes. If you’re one of our pie bakers, can bake pies for this dinner, or can help in any way, let Louise know by either seeing her at church or call-ing 862-6018.

During the Christmas holidays, on December 27, we served the Liberty Union-Thurston Athletic Hall of Fame

Banquet.

Our fundraising total for 2013 was $8,765—90% of this was applied to the Family Life Center mort-gage principle and 10% to apportionments. Thank you to everyone who helped with these events.

Growing out of a discussion at Administrative Council Re-treat at Soggy Hill on July 29 and 30, 1983, the Church approved the operation of the Christian Academy in March of 1985. The purpose for the Academy was as described in Second Timothy 2:15 “Do your best to win full approval in God’s sight, as a worker who is not ashamed of his works, one who correctly teaches the message of God’s truth.”

The Academy was to have four study sessions each year covering topics from Bible Archeology to the study of Rev-elation. It had a board of three directors and awarded “Degrees” for members who attended the sessions. The “Degrees” to be offered depended on the number of hours spent and were Disciples Degree, Faith Degree, Hope Degree and Love Degree.

Classes were taught by Church members, the local Minis-ter or by visiting Ministers. Some of the local teachers were Chris Eddy, Dottie Harman, Judy Fletcher Littrell, Maxine Quilliam, Rob Sayer, Pastor Don Shaver and Paul Smock. Members could get credits by studying approved workshops and courses offered elsewhere. During the seven years the Academy was in operation, it had fifteen courses, fifty-five individuals attended at least one class, and Jane Farmer attended fifteen.

Studies included Trinity, Old and New Testaments, Bible Survey, Peter, Galatians, Visitation, Christian Secret of a Happy Life, Personal Growth and Equipping for Ministry, Church History, Cults, Crowd of Witnesses, and Prayer.

WORTH HARMAN Historian: The Christian Academy

Winter is in full swing, and along with it, the Trustees are trying to keep up with the leaks that have popped up in the various roofs around the church. About the time we think we have one figured out, another appears. We have had a contractor out to look at the situation and are in the process of coming up with a game plan to cor-rect the problem(s). With the extreme cold we had a cou-ple of weeks ago, we had our first pipe break in the fur-nace room. Fortunately the water sprayed down and not up into all the electrical boards that are near by. The pipes are in the process of being fixed. Jim and Steve have been busy stripping the wax and re-waxing the main hallway in the church. It turned out very nicely. Think Spring and warm weather!

ATTENDANCE & GIVING

It has been a crazy, busy time at the food pantry. Besides rearranging the new food pantry, requests for food have been keeping everyone busy. The needs for February are:

February 2 Saltine Crackers

February 9 Dish Soap

February 16 Shampoo

February 26 Chunky Soup

Thanks again to everyone for bringing “salt” and “light” in this very dark and needy world.

TIM & SUE COOPER December Food Pantry Challenge

The next meeting of the Good Neighbors will be Monday, February 11

th at Faith Lutheran Church. Board members

meet at 6 p.m. and everyone else (all interested parties) meet at 7 p.m.

The Middle School is still in need of mentors to work with a student during study hall time. The session would last from 20 to 40 minutes—not much out of a day to help a child succeed in school. Call Kay Williamson to volunteer: 862-6693 or [email protected]. Good Neighbors is working to develop a wellness out-reach. If anyone is interested in helping in this area con-tact Gayle McCreery ([email protected])—it

may be as simple as taking blood pressures or joining a walking group.

Anyone is welcome to join the Monday Bible study at Walnut Creek Apartments at 2 p.m. each week. Dottie and Worth Harman are leading this opportunity to fellow-ship with residents and help the folks be a part of the neighborhood.

Blessings! Celebrate the Love of Jesus in your neighbor-hood!

The Empty Bowls Project is an international movement

that began in the early 1990’s and has raised millions of

dollars in donations to help hungry people. It was founded

by several school teachers in Michigan whose students

wanted to raise money to help the local people who were

hungry. They decided to have a fundraiser dinner of soup

and bread. The image of the empty bowl reminds us of the

many people whose bowls are empty because they don’t

have food.

As we fill our bowls with soup, we are reminded of how

blessed we are to have a hot meal everyday. Our grati-

tude leads to giving.

In 2012 the Baltimore and Thurston communities had their

first Empty Bowls Project. The goal was to raise money

for two area charities: The Baltimore/Thurston Food Pan-

try and the Liberty Township Community Chest. These

local organizations help to support individuals and families

in need of food, rent, utility, clothing and prescription as-

sistance. Our local Empty Bowls Project raised almost

$3,800 in 2012 and over $4,700 in 2013.

The 2014 Empty Bowls event will be Sunday, March 16th

at the Baltimore VFW. The planning committee is meeting

to decide the details. Please save the date and plan to

support this community event.

In January of 2013, I began a 12 month term as chairman

of the Christ United Methodist Finance Committee. I admit

that I was a little concerned about managing the budget

that showed a projected deficit of about $114,000. I was

told this was normal. The projected income is based pri-

marily on the pledge cards, but that number is always less

than actual giving. Okay, that made me feel a little better.

More importantly, I also had to have faith that God would

provide for our needs.

Now, a year later, I am happy to report that, due to the

financial commitment of giving by our congregation, and

the frugal budget management of the Administrative Coun-

cil, the committees, and our trustees, not only did we pay

all of our expenses and our apportionments, but we were

also able to add money into our savings account, pay off

the smaller of our two mortgages, and also start putting

money into a fund to replace the furnaces that heat our

sanctuary.

We begin 2014 with a budget of $406,762, which is actual-

ly $4,000 less than last year’s budget. The deficit from

expenses to projected income in 2014 is $96,000, which is

$18,000 less than last year. Again, this is primarily based

on the amount shown on pledge cards. Thank you to all of

the committee chairs for providing your requirements as

input into the 2014 budget.

Copies of this year’s budget are available in the church

office if you would like to review it. If you are like me, you

don’t look at budgets and financial spreadsheets on a daily

basis. So if you pick up a copy, please take note of a few

things.

PRAISE BAND DIRECTOR

1.) Projected expenses are shown above the line of ***,

projected income is in the lower left section below the line

of ***, and projected balance is in the lower right section

next to expenses.

2.) Each major budget category is listed with a total

amount. The lines under that show the detailed break-

down under the major category. Those amounts are

shown in the Subtotal column. Some of those subcatego-

ries are broken out even more under the Line Item column.

3.) For confidentiality, only the total amount is shown in

staffing costs, not individual amounts.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I will do my

best to answer or find an answer.

Dave Brookover has accepted the Finance Committee

chair role for 2014. Please pray for Dave, the Finance

Committee, and the continued spiritual growth of us in our

congregation for giving, not just financially, but also our

time and talents.

THANK YOU

Dear members of Christ Church,

I just wanted to take a minute to let you all know how much I have enjoyed my time as the interim choir direc-tor. We are all called to get out of our comfort zone in ser-vice, and directing definitely put me out of my comfort zone! My discomfort resulted in uncountable blessings. I must also make sure to say thanks to Julie for all of her efforts as our accompanist.

I would also like to take this time to encourage any of you who enjoy singing to join our choir and start adding to your blessings.

Yours in Christ, Tim Lawlis

Christ United Methodist Church,

Thank you very much for your prayers, food, funeral visita-tion, words of encouragement and condolence cards. Your acts of Christian love were greatly appreciated as comfort at mom’s passing. God bless each of you.

Barry & Barb Waites, Wayne & Lorri Mauger, and Families

Staff & SPRC,

Thank you so much for the flowers you sent to my father’s funeral and for all your support.

Nikki Kellner Noland on behalf of the Family of Milton “Porky” L. Kellner Jr.

Dear Pastor Alice, Staff, SPR Committee & All of Christ’s Church Congregation,

Thank you so very much for all of your prayers, concerns & caring thoughts during Porky’s 64 month illness. Also, thank you very much for all the cards and the lovely plant-er honoring Porky & his life. I appreciate the meal after the funeral as well.

Pastor Alice, thank you for all of your love, guidance & caring during these past few months.

I still need your thoughts & prayers as I adjust to Porky’s physical absence. He will be really, really missed.

Sincerely, Diane
