Pledges/donations to date: $378,450.17 Special Giving—-Interior: $114,083.24 New Adoration Chapel inviting for quiet time with Our Lord When we began this column in the bulletin several months ago, parishioners shared testimonials to express what Eucharistic Adoration means to them. Returning to that practice, here are some reflections on my first experience of quiet time in the new Our Lady Queen of the Angels Perpetual Adoration Chapel.
“The chapel is very beautiful in the simplicity of its interior. Because it is small, it provides an intimate yet very inviting setting. It’s you (the adorer) and Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament – up close and personal.
My first hour of adoration in the new chapel followed a fraz-zled day at work. I needed to decompress and be still. I found the opportunity to do this in the quiet space of our new Adoration Chapel. I could just be with the Lord, talk things through with Him, and settle my mind, heart and spirit.
It remains a learning experience for me to spend an hour in stillness and prayer. Distractions continue; my mind flitters. But the environment of the new chapel seems very conducive to helping me focus on Our Lord’s presence and letting Him guide me through the prayer, reading, meditation.
My recommendation: try it! It might just be the pause you need to refresh, to deal with a situation, to find comfort, to find peace.” --Therese Horvat, parishioner

Pledges and donations still needed and very wel-comed – especially for the art above the entry door to the chapel. See desk in church narthex or contact Father McDonald.

Saints Alive! St. Aloysius Gonzaga, whom we celebrate on Thursday, may be best-known today for the basketball
powerhouse university that bears his name, but his short life was lived with a heart for God. Born into an Italian aristocratic family in 1568, Aloysius grew up in royal courts and army camps. His father directed him to a military career, but from the time he was nine years old, Aloysius determined to enter religious life, specifically as a Jesuit. He loved solitude and prayer, and he loved the Church. When he was 18, Aloysius finally won his father’s permission to enter the Society of Jesus. There, he studied philosophy and served God through those in need. While serving the sick in a Milan hospital during the plague of 1587, Aloys-ius contracted that terrible disease and died. He was 23. During his life, St. Aloysius had two encounters with priests who would be saints: St. Charles Borro-meo gave Aloysius his first Holy Communion, and he received last rites from his spiritual director, St. Robert Bellarmine. St. Aloysius Gonzaga is a patron of youth; June 21 is his feast day. St. Aloysius doesn’t seem to have much in common with the two saints celebrated on Friday: Saints John Fisher and Thomas More. However, despite differences of time and location, all three witnessed in word and deed that our first loyalty is to God. Englishmen of exemplary lives – one a bishop and the other a lawyer and father of four, St. John Fisher and Thomas More were condemned to death by King Henry VIII for refusing to side with him over and above God, the Church, the Pope, and their own individual consciences. Fr. John Fisher tutored young Henry VIII, who was for many years a devout man. However, when the Church wouldn’t approve the unlawful divorce of Henry from his wife Catherine, things became dicey for anyone who didn’t side with the king. Now-named Bishop John Fisher stood with the Church. As part of the king’s re-bellion against the Pope and the Church, Henry had parliament write an Oath of Supremacy, claiming that the king was the supreme head of the Catholic Church in England. Bishop Fisher refused to sign the Oath be-cause there is only one Catholic Church and the Pope is its head. The bishop was sent to prison for high trea-son and then condemned to die 14 months later, June 22, 1535. A special connection with another saint proved to be a blessing for John Fisher, who was initially sen-tenced to be drawn and quartered. However, the king feared that such a torturous death might cause the bishop to linger until the feast of John the Baptist on June 24 – calling attention to the similarities of the two situa-tions. So, instead, the king had John Fisher beheaded – a quicker death that was, ironically, just like John the Baptist. Thomas More was born a few years later than John Fisher (1477). A lawyer and family man of great charm, Thomas became a friend of King Henry and later, chancellor of England. When the divorce rebellion oc-curred, Thomas More would not approve – he resigned as chancellor and sought peace in retirement. Still, Thomas More was arrested for treason and kept in the Tower of London for a year while the king tried to con-vince him to change his mind. When that did not happen, Thomas More was condemned to death by beheading on July 7, 1535. He said to the crowd, “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first.” Historians make a special point that both Bishop John Fisher and Thomas More lived godly lives of humility and devotion and as such in their regular, daily lives they were “saints-in-the-making.” They were martyrs because they were saints, wrote Fr. Bill Curran, not saints because they were martyrs. Both stand as patrons of religious liberty, the sanctity of marriage, Papal authority that can’t be usurped by the state, and the unity and integrity of the Church; they share June 22 as their feast day. Let’s pray this week for the grace to form our consciences well, to grow in holiness, and to have the cour-age to speak when called to do so.

“T o what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable
can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of
plants." - Mk 4:30-32b Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD.
