People Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Lector The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.
And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”
So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” God said, “See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

At 10:15 a.m., the choir sings the antiphon at the beginning, then the congregation immediately repeats it and sings it again where indicated; the choir sings the verses to Anglican chant. Please remain seated.
7 Praise the Lord from the earth, * you sea-monsters and all deeps;
8 Fire and hail, snow and fog, * tempestuous wind, doing his will;
9 Mountains and all hills, * fruit trees and all cedars;
10 Wild beasts and all cattle, * creeping things and winged birds;
11 Kings of the earth and all peoples, * princes and all rulers of the world;
12 Young men and maidens, * old and young together. Antiphon
13 Let them praise the Name of the Lord, * for his Name only is exalted, his splendor is over earth and heaven.
14 He has raised up strength for his people and praise for all his loyal servants, * the children of Israel, a people who are near him. Hallelujah! Antiphon

Lector The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

prAyers of the people on st. frAncis’ dAy
For the artistry of spinning Spiders, the industry of Ants, for all alert animals of field and forest, for Squirrels that gather, Chipmunks that chatter, and for Mice that burrow We give you thanks, O Lord.
For the splendor of the great deep and sparkling streams, for Water Bugs and Dolphins, for all Fish and all sea-life, and for the sheer size of Whales We give you thanks, O Lord.
For all things that fly and have taught us to reach upward, for Pelicans and Parakeets, Barn Owls and Peacocks, for Eagles that soar, and for Birds that nest in eaves and attics, reminding us that we are not alone. We give you thanks, O Lord.
For beasts that lumber, for Elephants and Hippos, Grizzly Bears and Tortoises, Porcupines and Three-toed Sloths, and for all creatures that remind us not to hurry. We give you thanks, O Lord.
10
For graceful beasts, for the Great Cats, for Gazelle, for Giraffe, and for Flamingos, Fox, and Fawns. We give you thanks, O Lord.
For the animals that work for human good, for Horses, Oxen, Mules, and beasts of burden, for Dogs who lead the blind and track the lost. We give you thanks, O Lord.
For the animals that share our homes, for faithful Dogs and purring Cats, and all creatures that teach us to love without judgement, for Hamsters, Birds, assorted Reptiles, and Rabbits. We give you thanks, O Lord.
Give us grace to learn from the animal kingdom that you created all things, that we might work together for a truly common good. Hear us, O Lord.
Deliver us from the presumption that we are creation’s central act, remind us who are redeemed by a Cross, that these your animals are redeemed by an Ark of your grace. Hear us, O Lord.
Make of us proper stewards of all creation, that caring for your creatures and for their homes, we may come at last to that Peaceable Kingdom where Lion and Lamb lie down together. Hear us, O Lord.
O God, creator of all things, we remember before you today your servant Francis, who preached to Birds and gave his cloak to a Beggar. Give us the grace of Francis, that we may be instruments of your peace. Give us generous spirits, that we, with reckless and joyful abandon, may sow your truth throughout the world. Give us the mind of Christ, that we may accept all who call upon your name, that Birds and Beggars and all creation may all be drawn into that kingdom, which lives forever in your presence through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

offertory Anthem All things bright and beautiful John Rutter (b. 1945)at 10:15 a.m.
All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all.
Each little flow’r that opens, each little bird that sings, he made their glowing colors, he made their tiny wings.
The purple-headed mountain, the river running by, the sunset and the morning, that brightens up the sky;
the cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun, the ripe fruits in the garden, he made them ev’ry one;
he gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell how great is God Almighty, who has made all things well.

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.
On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,People We celebrate his life, death, and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Soup Chefs to meet on Wednesday morning, October 9 @ 10:00 a.m. in the CCC kitchen: Christ Church will again carry on our commitment to the Friday Café at First Church by delivering 12 quarts of vegetarian soup every second Friday of the month. Such a wonderful way to work with our Cambridge neighbors to provide community and nourishment! For the past few years we have done our cooking in the early evening, but this year we intend to do some morning meetings as well. Our chopping and stirring provides a great time to visit with one another and we welcome anyone to join us. It seldom takes us longer than an hour. Dropping by is fine, but if you have questions or would like to let me know that you are coming, please e-mail Lindsay Greimann ([email protected]).
Old Fashioned, All-Parish Spaghetti Dinner: You are invited! Come and join us for the annual Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, October 18 at 6:30 p.m. Connect with old and new friends to help us kick off this year’s stewardship campaign and enjoy each other’s company! We’ll provide the food and wine, just bring yourselves. We will also provide a supervised movie and pizza for children under 12. Please rsvp to [email protected].
Founding Sunday, October 20, Coffee Hour: Please join the entire congregation to thank our East Apthorp members at a special coffee hour reception in their honor after the 10:15 a.m. service on Sunday, October 20 hosted by your Planned Giving Committee. If you would like to get involved in the East Apthorp Society, please contact Carey Bloomfield and Elizabeth Childs, Co-Chairs of the Planned Giving Committee, at [email protected].
Thrift Shop Update: Brisk sales of jewelry and household goods the past month have depleted our stock of both decorative objects and practical items. If you are doing fall cleaning or downsizing, please think of the Thrift Shop! Bring your donations to the shop (behind the church at 17 Farwell Place) when it’s open (Tues. & Thurs. 10:00 a.m.– 4:00 p.m. or Sat. 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.) or to the bin next to the church office during weekday office hours or Sunday mornings. Christ Church Cambridge is the Episcopal Church in Harvard Square – a community of God’s people who are varied in gifts and united in mission.
Our church is a place of affirming sanctuary to the diverse community around us. We welcome and affirm old and young, rich and poor, the LGBTQ community, those who are single, married, and
families in their many forms. Christ Church seeks to be a place of hospitality, hope, redemption and peace for those in Cambridge and beyond.
We experience joy, laughter, and delight in moments of shared liturgical celebration, as we experi-ence the awe of God’s presence among us in moments of ministry that include healing prayers,
outreach, and pastoral care with the people around us. We continue to discern our ministry, as our hearts are continually tuned to sing God’s praise.
Christ Church is open for quiet prayer and reflection during office hours.
