    Holographic

    StorageHolographic Storage is an optical

technology that allows 1 million bitsof data to be written and read out insingle flashes of light. Thousands of

Holograms can be stored in the samelocation throughout the entire depth

    of the medium.

    HOLOGRAM:

It has a very unique feature, namely, any small part of themedium contains information about the image.

    ADVANTAGES:

Resistance to damage - If some parts of the medium aredamaged, all information can still be obtained from other

parts.Efficient retrieval - All information can be retrieved from

    any part of the medium

Holograp h ic Storage Mec hanism:

Holography breaks through the density limits of conventional storage by going beyond recording

only on the surface, to recording through the fulldepth of the medium. Unlike other technologies thatrecord one data bit at a time, holography allows amillion bits of data to be written and read in parallel

with a single flash of light. This enables transfer rates significantly higher than current optical storagedevices .

    Storage Media

The media is fabricated from mixtures of two

independently polymerizable yet compatiblechemical systems. Recording disks are formed byan polymerization of one of the components toform the matrix or support of the medium.Theother component , which is photosensitive , remains unreacted and dissolved in this matrix .

    How is data recorded?

Light from a single laser beam is split into two beams, the signal beam (which carries the data) and

the reference beam. The hologram is formed wherethese two beams intersect in the recording medium.

At the point of intersection of the reference beam and the data carrying signal beam, the

hologram is recorded in the light sensitive storagemedium. A chemical reaction occurs in the mediumwhen the bright elements of the signal beam intersectthe reference beam, causing the hologram stored.

    HO W IS DATA READ?

In order to read the data, the reference beam deflects

off the hologram thus reconstructing the storedinformation. This hologram is then projected onto adetector that reads the data in parallel. This parallelread out of data provides holography with its fast

    transfer rates.
