The Hollywood Group continues to focus on the growth of our own team through our skills development programme. The appointment of a dedicated and experienced national training co-ordinator in 2012 has brought another level of professionalism to this aspect of our business. Each of the six regions in which we operate has a full-time training facilitator and four of the regions now have a dedicated training facility. In a country of high unemployment, particularly amongst the unskilled youth, we have taken it upon ourselves to employ capable young people who will grow with us. We are proud of our track record and we strive to continue to add value to the communities we service by not only providing a living for the team, but to develop them on a personal and professional basis. Hollywood is extremely proud of the fact that it has invested in excess of R2.6 million in skills development during the 2012 financial year.

Hollywood has extended the social responsibility initiative introduced last year where branches took on the duty of identifying and selecting worthy causes in their areas and identified the individual needs of those organisations. This initiative worked extremely well in 2012, not only in terms of providing these worthy organisations with some of their needs, but in engendering a sense of community within the Hollywood team. So much so that it has become company policy and very much a part of our culture. Working with these projects has made our lives more meaningful and the good work has had a positive impact on our communities, punters, and team which is evidenced in the testimonials that follow. It has certainly helped our team members develop into better team leaders and we take great pride in the continued success of this programme.

Over the last year we accelerated our growth by opening a further 20 branches, expanding our footprint in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Eastern Cape and Western Cape - 20 more organisations will benefit from this project. Furthermore, we can proudly say that we have reached a milestone of 51 retail branches nationally, increasing our team complement to over 1500 members.

We once again express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the organisations for their invaluable and committed work in our communities and to the individual Hollywood branches for wholeheartedly supporting the programme and making it their own. Finally, I would like to thank our valued, loyal customers and our dedicated team members who make all this possible.

Thank you also to our 19 trainers, 7 jockeys, 1 work rider and 600 grooms for their support in flying the purple flag and being part of our team.

a Fun Show For allHollywood Team Support provided funds for a community interaction project at Qalakahle High, a rural school in Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal.

We decided to acquire four mobile laboratory kits. This ensures that the science equipment is secure while at the same time allowing learners the opportunity to conduct practicals.

Hollywood purchased four comprehensive kits, two for Physical Science and two for Life Science, covering the grade 10 to 12 curriculum.

We decided to make the handover of the lab equipment to the school a formal occasion with an opportunity for team building and selling the

brand. Little did we know what an impression the day would make on all of us.

The Hollywood team of 19 travelled to Qalakahle on Thursday 30 May in Hollywood branded vehicles, arriving at 8:30am in order to set up for a 9:30am start to the proceedings.

The day became a lesson to us that some communities focus more on getting the process right rather than on results.

Hollywood Shows Great SupportThe 2013 Springhills under 19 Soccer Tournament was a great success, which was largely attributed to your support and participation. The carnival atmosphere certainly provided a stage for our learners to showcase their soccer skills and talents. Both learners and officials conducted themselves in a professional manner which augurs well for future tournaments.

In keeping with the theme “Promoting Education Through Sports “, Springhills will always endeavour to use sport as a vehicle to promote education. Judging by the many accolades received, this tournament will be an annual event.

We take this opportunity in congratulating Hillview Secondary, the winners of our inaugural tournament.

We would like to sincerely thank Hollywood Sportsbook Holdings for their generous support this year and we look forward to partnering with you again next year.

Hollywood team SUppoRt SMI Ashtown

Building a Great RelationshipS.M.I Ashtown was established in the year 2000 by incorporating all the individual clubs from the community. The club had embarked on forming partnerships with business to assist financially. One such company has been Hollywood who has volunteered to be the clubs partner over the last few years.

Our relationship has grown from just sponsoring the club on a weekly basis with Hollywood branded Still Water for our teams, to recently kitting out all 12 divisions with the Hollywood branded away kits, in conjunction with our main sponsor S.M.I Transport who sponsored the home kit.

This has given the club a very professional outlook and has motivated the respective divisions, proof of which we have seen in our results last season.

The Under 11’s did exceptionally well by winning the league, the Under 17’s won the Shield Knock Out final and the Under 13’s finished runners-up in the league. All the other divisions have improved their league standings from the previous year.

This has all been possible with the support from Hollywood which is appreciated and judging from my meeting with the CEO, Suren Rampersadh, the partnership can only become stronger.

Clares Cricket Club

on the Ball with HollywoodClares CC was formed in 1938 and affiliated to the former NCB, in the days when sport was still segregated. We are now affiliated to the Kwa-Zulu Natal Cricket Union, since sport became unified. Clares has always produced some of the finest cricketers and a large number of our players have gone on to represent the province or the country.

We have always been committed to youth development and a significant number of our players from our junior structures, are currently plying their trade in the Premier League and a few of them have secured contracts with the Dolphins Academy.

We currently run a number of junior and senior teams. Our Challenge League team this year reached the finals of the T20 Competition. Clares celebrates it’s 75th anniversary this year. We are planning a reunion of all our past players, who will be honoured at this event.

Clares is proud to be associated with Hollywood and are very thankful for the generous sponsorship we receive on an annual basis.

Your sponsorship has assisted us in developing sport in the Asherville, Overport and Sydenham areas. We look forward to a long-lasting relationship.

Hollywood ladySmitH Inkanyezi Training Centre

a Heart warming taleThe INKANYEZI TRAINING CENTRE is a special needs school located in Steadville, Ladysmith, where children are taught skills such as brick making, iron work and upholstery.

Simpiwe and Jane from team Ladysmith chose this school, once again, for it’s charitable donation. Last year Hollywood donated a braille machine and other braille equipment to this school. When we visited at the beginning of this year, the Headmistress, Mrs Busi Mbuyisa, told us that as a direct result of this, they were able to send Sinetemba to a normal school this year as she had learnt braille and was able to take this skill into a mainstream school. Sinetemba is an 8 year old girl who went blind overnight after developing a severe headache. She wants to be a teacher someday.

This year our focus was on the children that need a higher level of care. Some of these children are autistic, others cannot talk properly. There are about 28 children in this section of the school. The main portion of our donation was spent on panel heaters for the classrooms as it gets extremely cold in winter. Mr Garth von Druten of TESLAH ELECTRICAL in Ladysmith has very kindly offered to fit these heaters for them, free of charge.

We also donated a lockable steel cabinet, in which they can store medication and such. There are a couple of children who cannot sit for long periods of time. For these children we donated 2 single bed mattresses along with mattress protectors and fitted sheets. The final part of our donation was a laminator and pouches. The teacher of this class was very excited to see this. The children in this class are very loving and we were greeted with hugs and kisses. We also took along some party goods to treat the children. This is a rare event for them and they were very excited.

Mrs Mbuyisa thanked Hollywood profusely for their generous donation. Simpiwe and Jane left feeling humbled but with light hearts knowing that our contribution will make a definite difference in the lives of these children. We would like to thank Hollywood for giving us the opportunity to represent them. It felt fantastic to give to such a worthy cause, and we know that our contribution was greatly appreciated by all.

Hollywood aRGyle Highway Hospice

new Uniforms Brings SmilesThis year, Hollywood Argyle decided to support the Highway Hospice situated in Inanda. They currently have 132 patients and OVC’S (Orphan or Vulnerable Children) in their hospice program. Most of the children come from disadvantaged backgrounds, where there is no source of income. Hospice assists with donated food parcels to the families and children.

With the costs of the Hospice being over R15 million per annum it is only through the kindness of caring people and donations from the business and public sectors that they are able to continue and extend their program of care and love to the terminally ill of all communities, free of charge.

Hollywood’s donation resulted in 36 children receiving new uniforms and shoes for the very first time. This was an exciting and memorable time for them. Very often, children are turned away from school because they are not attired in their school uniform so this donation has most definitely positively impacted on the quality of life of these vulnerable children.

Hollywood made a small contribution to the community of Inanda and gave some children courage and hope for the future. It was an honour for us to play a part in the lives of the children.

IOP is currently in the process of building a soup kitchen and thousands of orphans will soon be receiving nutritional meals.

Hollywood Empangeni this year, decided to sponsor the organisation and bought them a fridge, a microwave, blankets, an urn, a massive cooking pot and a gas cooker top to the value of R10 000. That’s what Hollywood does, we always give back to the community. These dedicated people and their team members really deserved this blessing.

Their sole purpose is to motivate and stimulate the children with skills so they can become self-sufficient individuals.

The idea for painting and re-vamping the rooms at Lakehaven Children’s home was inspired by the most gorgeous smiles you can imagine when we visited the childrens home last year.

Team Park managed to revamp two rooms with floor tiles, one room with built-in cupboards and painted three rooms. We gave their rooms a brand new look. They will now

be proud to be spending time in their rooms.

The children were overjoyed when they saw their new rooms but we must say that it was more of a privilege to the Park team to be a part of this heart warming experience!

They currently have 15 children who live with disabilities, most of them come from disadvantaged backgrounds, where there is no source of income.

The Ekuphileni Community Care Centre was struggling to get computers to teach the children computer skills so we donated a computer and printer which has enabled them to continue and extend their computer literacy programme.

cooking and cleaning made easyJohn, Winny and Antoinette from the Hillbrow team went to do the hand-over at Twilight Children, which is an outreach programme, providing shelter for homeless children.

We donated various sized pots, cutlery and a large industrial washing machine that can work 24 hours a day. Most of the pots they have don’t have handles, which makes this difficult for them to feed the children. On weekends some of the children go home so they need the smaller pots as there are fewer kids.

The washing machine enables the centre to ensure the kids have clean clothes at all times, so one less thing for them to worry about.

They showed us the outside area where the children from the outreach program sit and eat. They have tried to make it really nice for the kids. The children have painted the walls, so their art is everywhere. There is also a message on the table put in small tiles that says: “Inscape loves you”. This was put there a long time ago, but makes sure the children know that they are loved.

It was such an honour and privilege to do this hand-over on behalf of Hollywood, as these people care so much for the kids, and they are always giving their best to them..

posters Bring colour to little livesTeam Barclay Square went to do the handover at PEN, an early childhood development organisation. They have one crèche on their own premises and support 24 others.

It was such an honour to do this handover on behalf of Hollywood; we really helped them so much in their day to day tasks.

They make educational posters for the classrooms for their crèches. They really put such effort into making it pretty and as educational as they can and they do this with very little. The teachers cut out their own pictures and words to make these posters but these don’t last long if not laminated, therefore we thought it would be a great idea to assist them with an A2 laminating machine and laminating pouches. We also got them A3 and A4 laminating pouches.

We also took them A2, A3 and A4 bright coloured cardboard for their posters and bright coloured paper for the children to use for drawing their pictures and performing other tasks expected of them. They also needed plain white paper which we were also able to assist them with.

The teachers do a wonderful job in making the classrooms pretty and as comfortable as possible for the children. For example in the baby room, they have made mobiles to entertain the babies using wool, drawings and soft toys. They have different themes for each school every week, and take educational toys to the crèches aligned to that theme. We hope that our donations will go a long way in helping them with their efforts.

We thanked PEN on behalf of Hollywood for all that they have done for the community of Pretoria and what they continue to do.

wheelchair & medical items On 21 December 2012 Gauteng team members Nicole, Kenneth and Sanvir made a donation to Soweto Hospice. The items bought included a wheel chair and medical items for those affected by HIV/AIDS. The Hospice offers AIDS programs, administers medication to infected patients and provides support for families affected by HIV/AIDS. The team were welcomed by Durcus Ramakuela who was in tears to see them. She informed them that most of the items which we supplied were nearly finished and she was contemplating buying the items from her own pocket as a solution. They met the rest of the management and nurses from the Hospice and were shown around the facility. The thing that really touched their hearts was a tree branch in the hospice with paper butterflies which showed the people they have lost, with comments about them.

They ran and jumped with excitement, they hopped on their bicycles and started to ride immediately. They then came and gave us hugs to say thank you.

The house parents Joey and Roger were very thankful and said that they really appreciate what

Hollywood has done for them.

The team expressed a big thank you to Hollywood for letting them be a part of this, it is such a great pleasure to see those kids looking like they have no worries in the world.

We are unable to publish pictures for the safety of the children, as most of them have been taken away from their families due to sexual or physical abuse, neglect and abandonment.

ceilings to Keep the Heat & cold at BayMakie and Antoinette from Hollywood Alberton went to do the hand-over to Leth’Ithemba, a home based care organisation.

They currently have 63 children in the crèche. Most of the classrooms did not have ceilings, and those that did were falling apart. We thought this would make a big difference, especially in winter, so we arranged to put in ceilings - they were absolutely ecstatic. The classrooms will not be so cold in winter, or so hot in summer.

When the children returned from the school holidays, they immediately noticed this and were so happy. Parents of the children were also very happy. The Chairperson of the board

was very grateful and said thank you very much to Hollywood for taking care of them.

They are currently applying for nutrition for the kids from the government, where, if approved they will get R3.82 per child per day. This is not a lot of money, but will make a huge difference and make their lives a little easier.

It was such a pleasure to be able to help Leth’Ithemba on behalf of Hollywood, as they give so much to these kids and the community, and there is often not enough money to pay their salaries. For them it is about the people who need help, this is

their first priority – money comes second.

In December the Newton Mall team, headed by area manager Sanvir Singh, made a donation to Sparrow Village. This is both a Hospice for the terminally ill and a Children’s Home for vulnerable children, who are homeless due to the death of one or both of their parents.

The ministry is one of health and hope. We were welcomed by the founder, Corine McClintock, who was very happy with the donation of school bags, tracksuits, a cookware set and blankets. Thereafter we were taken to meet the children who were very happy to see us and could not wait to start opening their gifts.

Kempton Park team members Lizelle, Nomthandazo and Mary went to Tumelo Home at Ivory Park to hand over clothes, comforters, shoes, sanitary pads and pampers. Most of the kids were so excited and some immediately put on their new clothes and shoes. Their actions showed us how happy they were to receive new clothes.

The social workers Solly, Refilwe and the rest of their team were very thankful and appreciative. We took photos with them and some of the kids were even calling us ‘Mama’.

The home caters for the mentally and physically challenged and has residents from 4 to 42 years old. Some of them are neglected by their families but others are supported by their parents who come to visit them often. We would like to thank the Hollywood team for allowing us to be part of this.

Graduating in StyleOliver’s House in Benoni has embarked on a project to create a village and organic farm which will accommodate, treat and educate the AIDS orphans currently in its care. This biospheric development will offer the children a rare opportunity to experience and gain awareness, appreciation and respect for each other and for the integrity of natural systems and self sustainment. Oliver’s House currently cares for 210 children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years.

Hollywood Boksburg and Brakpan again chose this organisation as their 2012/2013 charity. The team decided to invest in the graduate’s education by donating uniforms. Some of the team members were privileged to attend the graduation ceremony and present the proud little learners with their uniforms. We strongly believe in equipping the kids with self-pride and a healthy self-confidence. A lovely morning was enjoyed by all with the happy children singing, dancing and being presented with graduation certificates. We are humbled, honoured and grateful to be part of such a worthy cause and wish the graduates well in primary school in 2013.

Hollywood qUiGneyThe River of Life

Refreshing young HeartsThe River of Life consists of a single mother (Mama Agnus) and +- 26 children. These kids are abandoned by their parents – sometimes on her doorstep. Mama Agnus is single-handedly running this home and lives on her pension she receives on a monthly basis. The eldest child is about 11 years old. She also takes care of a baby girl that was abandoned when she was 3 weeks old - she’s now four years old. Finding sponsors is very difficult for her.

On the 18th of December we at Hollywood Quigney teamed up and went to the Charity Organization to deliver all

their goods to the kids and Mama Agnus. Her house is situated in East Bank, East London and it takes about 3 taxis to get there when travelling with public transport. On our arrival the kids were very anxious and excited. Mama Agnus burst into tears and while we were delivering a speech all the kids were singing and clapping hands. We supplied them with duvet covers, a 13kg washing machine, pillows, face cloths, snacks, a big cake, refreshments and bedding. Our hearts went out to these kids because they are still very young, ageing from 4 months to 11 years old. They were so happy and you could see that we as a Hollywood team made a big difference to their lives. They even told us that this will be their best Christmas ever and most of us burst into tears.

Our hearts really went out to these kids. For a single woman to take responsibility for these kids is really amazing. It was time for us to leave and all of them were standing outside singing for us and showing their appreciation. We feel good because we know that we made a difference in their lives and in our individual lives.

We are blessed to have done this and would like to thank Hollywood for making this event possible. We have really touched so many people.

educational toys Bring HappinessMandarin Inn chose to support the Khaya Cheshire Home again this year as they are still in great need of vital equipment and daily supplies to keep the centre operational. The Khaya Cheshire Home, which is based in the Walmer Township, was established in 2007 as there was a great need for proper care for children with disabilities, whose parents are not always equipped to care for children with special needs.

When the Khaya Cheshire Home opened their doors they started out by caring for

23 children from in and around the Walmer area. They are currently caring for 96 children and are struggling to meet the demand. This organisation provides basic educational and life skills programs and they also provide food parcels to destitute families in the area and transport for the children that are at the centre.

It was a great pleasure for our team to be in a position to assist the Khaya Cheshire home with the ever growing needs they have. After meeting with the Staff and Chairperson of the home to establish what we could contribute to assist the organisation in the work they are doing, the following was decided and we donated: 2 fans, a microwave, a computer + anti-virus software, educational toys & books, cleaning supplies, curtains, a table and chairs and soccer balls.

The Khaya Cheshire Home, kids and staff know our team well and warmly welcomed us when we did our hand-over on the 29th of January 2013. We spent the morning playing with the kids and chatting to the team about the great work they are doing for the community, we were also able to provide snacks, cupcakes and juice as refreshments.

It was an awesome experience to see all the children’s faces beaming with joy and excitement. They expressed heartfelt gratitude towards Hollywood.

A special thanks to Hollywood for affording us this opportunity to make a difference in our community.

Thank you to our team and everyone else that assisted us in achieving this goal.

Hollywood SGt peppeRSCerebral Palsy Association

a Surprise trifectaWhat is Cerebral Palsy?Cerebral Palsy is damage done to part of the brain controlling MOVEMENT and POSTURE. This association in the Eastern Cape is involved in numerous activities to assist individuals with this disability. At present they are involved in a program to educate caregivers on how to handle and care for kids in a more therapeutic way. They also go out into the community and teach practical skills on how to feed, position, communicate and do everyday activities with these kids. They give out free booklets to caregivers so they can have a better understanding regarding Cerebral Palsy. The therapists also work in Daycare Centres, clinics and hospitals, educating

people on how to deal with Cerebral Palsy. There are obstacles but nothing this team can’t handle. They are extremely patient and

professional.

The organisation targets mainly the under-privileged in the Eastern Cape and they are succeeding in their aspirations.

We, as the Hollywood Sgt Peppers team felt proud to have sponsored this association, especially after realizing how much is done for the community at large.

They were only expecting a stove but when they saw the fridge and vacuum cleaner being carried in, they just stood there dumbstruck and at a loss for words.

We are even more proud to be part of the GREAT Hollywood Team – HOLLYWOOD CARES.

toys and necessities Bring SmilesZanethemba Safe Haven takes care of abused, abandoned and orphaned children mainly in the age group of 1-6 years old. They work together with the Department of Social Development and Child Welfare Organisations, like Child-Line and ACVV. There are three ladies that have been well trained by the organisation, taking care of the children 24/7.

We chose this Charity Organisation because we were inspired by the great work they are doing in helping the community. The lengths this organisation is willing to go to ensure that these destitute children have a safe haven is truly awe-inspiring.

Zanethemba Safe Haven houses, feeds, educates and counsels the children at the centre and try to create a stable and loving environment for them. The safe house has a community project for the children, which includes play-days (every Saturday), holiday programmes and a football club that has 80 active members.

In addition, the organisation also works with troubled youth and have exit strategies for gang members, youth at risk and those affected by the scourge of drugs. It also has substance abuse programs in the Northern areas of Port Elizabeth.

The Hollywood Parliament Team sponsored Zanethemba Safe Haven with the following:• Overhead projector• Surround sound DVD player• Child safety gate• Tables & chairs• Diapers & changing mats• Soccer balls and party packs

On 24 January 2013 the Parliament Street team did the hand over at the Zanethemba Safe Haven. The response we received was fantastic! The kids were thrilled with their party packs and everyone were very grateful for all the items we donated.

It brings us great joy to be a part of this wonderful outreach program and we look forward to many more years of community improvement projects.

Hollywood KoRStenHouse of Resurrection

planting the Seeds of HopeOur branch chose The House of Resurrection as our charity this year as their cause really touched our hearts. Another deciding factor was that many of our clients are from this area and also nominated the House of Resurrection for our Hollywood Cares project.

Our Korsten team did our charity hand-over to The House of Resurrection Children’s Haven on the 30th of January 2013. We were warmly welcomed by Rene, one of the people in charge of running the home.

The House of Resurrection Haven was founded in 1994 due to the growing pandemic of HIV and AIDS. The centre has grown over the years and has since been able to provide more services to the community such as training programmes and rehabilitative care to a Foster Cluster Scheme. It is governed by a board consisting of nine members and their staff consists of six house mothers and three assistant house mothers. There are seven supporting staff members to care for the children in need.

The Homes’ main focus is caring for children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. It also offers a home-like environment for some of the children who are orphaned or abandoned by their families. The home currently has 35 children - 23 boys and 12 girls ranging from 10 months to 14 years of age.

Rene also showed us The Aids Haven Garden of Remembrance which was founded in memorial of all the children that have had their precious young lives cut short. The garden was officially opened by Bishop Bethlehem Nopece on the 1st of December 2006. The House of Resurrection Children’s Haven also has a vegetable and fruit garden project that is maintained by the persons living at the home.

The team and the residents of the home were so happy and grateful for our contributions and time we spent with them. Our contributions to the organisation consisted of a computer, educational toys, party packs for the children, fruit trees and vegetable seeds for planting.

Thanks very much to Odette Frank our regional manager Liz, Carmen and the Korsten team members for their contributions in making this venture possible. Truly a morning well spent.

Our entire Korsten team has decided to donate R10.00 per person on a monthly basis. These funds will be used to purchase meat for the home as they cannot afford this expense. This was an initiative undertaken by Hollywood team leader, Odette.

Hollywood newton paRKHerberg Group Home

maintaining a Happy HomeOur choice of charity for this year was the Herberg Group Home in Hillside. This organisation offers a safe haven for mentally disabled adults and has been in operation since 1989. It was initially run as a psychiatric care centre. The organisation was first established and run from leased premises in Salsonival but in 1996 they were fortunate to obtain their own premises in Hillside. The home’s aim is to empower mentally disabled persons in ways that will help them be more self sufficient, independent and encourage activities that enable these individuals to feel more integrated within society.

The Herberg Group Home has many work programs teaching all their occupants different skills. During our visit, we as a team, were fortunate enough to support their handmade Jewellery Stall. All the team members bought various necklaces, bracelets and earrings made by the people living at the home. Other programmes currently running are Art Programmes and knitting groups. These activities are very stimulating and are thoroughly enjoyed by all participants.

The Herberg Group home’s greatest need was for some maintenance work to be done to their building, as it was very dilapidated and in desperate need of some paint. The window frames also needed to be treated. Mrs Burjins, the lady in charge of running the home, informed us that they were battling to maintain the building due to a lack of funds. We, as Hollywood Newton Park were fortunate enough to assist them in this need.

Our efforts to assist this charity organisation were graciously appreciated, and we were thanked in abundance. We spent the morning visiting with Mrs Burjins and some of the people living at the home and took them some snacks and Hollywood T-shirts to have something small to remember us by.

The interior of the building also needs some attention and this is something we will consider for next year’s “Hollywood Cares” project.

It was a great pleasure for us as the Hollywood team to once again be directly involved with giving back to the community. It doesn’t only encourage a sense of pride and admiration for our company but inspires us going forward to reach out in our personal capacities as well. Our hope for this project is that it grows from strength to strength and that we are able to bring about real positive change within our communities.

christmas comes early For the agedThis charity organisation needed new beddings, comforters, sheets, a dining room table and chairs as the existing items they were using were very old, broken, faded, tattered and torn. We were very fortunate and proud to have been in a position to assist this charity organisation with their needs.

Our team were warmly welcomed by the Matron, Nomanono Songelwa, and the people living at the centre. Some were even

singing, dancing and praying, as they expressed their gratitude! It was an overwhelming experience to say the least.

We started our presentation and all the team members that assisted with the hand over personally prepared something special as entertainment for the event. Ntando sang a song, Zama told a short story, Siboniwe wrote a poem and read it, and the rest of us offered words of encouragement and some massaged the elderlies’ shoulders.

Everyone was so impressed with our gesture and some even commented that Christmas came early this year! Their gratitude was truly heartfelt, and they could hardly contain their excitement as anticipation of sleeping on crisp new bedding was building. Hugs and smiles were generously exchanged for the duration of our visit.

Matron Nomanono Songelwa, made a small speech to express her gratitude and what was truly inspiring was that she said that because they are constantly struggling to keep the centre operational, she is frequently haunted by thoughts of having to close the centre down! But our efforts has inspired new hope in her, and because of our contributions and offering of our time, she now has found a new resolve and renewed motivation to keep the centre open to all those in need.

It was a bitter sweet moment for all of us, seeing all the smiles, laughter and gratitude, but then also hearing the sad stories and seeing the loneliness in so many of the elderly people’s eyes. We were very fortunate to spend time at the centre with all the people and to offer words of hope and encouragement.

Bethesda is a Christian faith based multi-denominational section 21 Company; providing comprehensive medical care, social work services, relief and pastoral care to destitute community members, irrespective of their race or creed; with

the aim of assisting these communities to develop sustainable programs capable of overtaking the devastating socio-economic impact of the HIV/AIDS and poverty crisis.

The Seven Passes Initiative is a youth development and educational organisation that seeks to prevent youth involvement in crime through providing quality after-school care. They do this through homework clubs and other educational activities, including sport, music and drama. The Initiative works towards long-term poverty alleviation through raising the educational level of the community.

Tebogo and Thabiso’s future plans for the team is to educate them positively through sport, to help them become the best human beings possible. They want to send them out in the world, to one day be great fathers, husbands and leaders. In order to be a good citizen you need to have leadership and discipline. This is what the coaches want to teach them. The soccer practice keeps them off the street which is already a step in the right direction.

On Thursday, 23 May 2013, Hollywood Alberton went to do the handover of the soccer kit to the Dawn Park Development Team. This is such a vibrant and disciplined team. The main objective of the coach is to teach the team not only how to play soccer, but they are also taught techniques and strategies, fitness and nutrition. They will be developed physically, mentally, spiritually and psychologically. All these factors will help them one day when they get sent out there to play in big teams and leagues. They will be able to handle the pressure and be the best that they can be.

Coach Kenny has such high expectations for his team, as he believes that a lot of them will become professional players. He also knows the only way this is go-ing to happen is with his guidance. He will teach them all there is to know about technique, skills and hard work. Yes, talent is a small factor, but hard work, the right training and motivation will also do the trick.

They are hoping to get their own-transport like a mini van so they can have more teams that can be trained to be our future stars.

At present the team is holding third position on the log of the Wembezi Umtshezi Promotion League. They are very optimistic that they will be promoted to the higher league next year.

They appreciate the gesture and it will go a long way in motivating the boys to perform better in their fight for promotion from the league.

BAM FC started just over a year ago with the intention of granting keen players who do not have the financial backing the opportunity to compete in the sport.

The entry criteria for joining a football league is that the team get sponsored a kit to play with, therefore it was the privilege of Hollywood Park to give this new team the boost they needed by sponsoring them with soccer kit.

The team were ecstatic when they saw the kit and were so eager to show off their skills in their new uniform.

Bolobedu Power Lines would like to thank Hollywood for the donation that they received.

Management of the team said the soccer gear will help them a lot as they had only one kit. It was very difficult because sometimes they played their games two days in a row and they did not have a clean, spare kit.

The soccer gear that they received from Hollywood will come in handy.

On 27 May 2013 Hollywood Mokopane visited Jamaica FC based in Masodi Village, 15km away from the Mokopane town. Everything was arranged with the coach and the technical team for them to receive their donation. Daniel travelled to the village around 15:00 where he caught the team practicing. Upon his arrival, the team was anticipating their donation. The practice stopped for a few minutes so that the handover could take place.

The team appreciated what we had done for them and they promised that they will be using our jersey for their matches and that they will also invite us to see their opening match as they have been promoted to another local league.

On Saturday 25 May 2013 Hollywood Polokwane delivered the soccer kit to Real Defenders FC at Seshego. Team Hollywood got there at around 13h00 and found the team ready and waiting. Their coach Phuti welcomed us and he was so excited to receive the soccer kit as they didn’t have one. They normally play using their own clothes. He introduced us to the players and they were also happy to see their new kit. The players changed and wore their new Hollywood Soccer Kit with plenty of pride. The players displayed their skills and the good thing was that on that day they had a game at around 15h00 so they played in their new kit.

Mr Phuti would like to thank Hollywood on behalf of the entire soccer team, community and supporters for their generous contribution to the social development and uplifting of Seshego youth.

The evening started with us as the Hollywood Representatives, welcoming all the soccer teams our Company had the privilege to sponsor this year. It was an eclectic mix of players who acted with overwhelming thankfulness for the kit they were being sponsored with. The enthusiasm and willingness to succeed so openly expressed by these teams, despite adversity, was infectious to say the least and their humility and appreciation was inspiring.

The great need for sponsorship was made ever more evident by testimonials from coaches, team managers and team captains as they proudly stepped forward to receive their purple and yellow soccer gear offering their gratitude for our support. The handover ceremony was held at the Moore Dyke Clubhouse and as we were ushered out to the field to take pictures of the teams in their kits, we were left awestruck! The sight before us was a sea of purple and yellow players of various ages decked out in full soccer gear running up and down the soccer field, kicking purple Hollywood soccer balls in varied directions, completely caught up in the moment of the game!

The field was alive with the spirit of soccer and what the beautiful game meant to each one of these players, juniors and seniors alike, and because Hollywood was such an epic part of this congregation, we could make the statement that the field was equally alive with the spirit of Hollywood.

Our advice to each and every one of these players is “Keep your eye on the ball!”

A heartfelt thank you to Hollywood Sportsbook for sponsoring the Soccer Kit but also, for cultivating a sense of belief and encouragement in these Soccer Clubs.

Our soccer kit handover to J-Bay United Football Club was on the 24th May 2013. It was a great privilege for the Hollywood Jeffrey’s Bay team to be a part of such an exciting venture. On 25 May 2013, our Quigney branch did our soccer kit handover; the team we chose this year was the Naughty Boys Football Club.

Naughty Boys is a sports club which was established in 1987 in Duncan Village and they are currently playing within the Duncan Village F.A League. Their aim is to keep young people off the streets and keep them occupied and busy with different types of sports.

We started off by greeting and welcoming all the players. They welcomed us onto their playing field and we presented them with their kit. The team’s excitement and gratitude was very overwhelming. We took many pictures and the coach also made a speech to thank us. They really look stunning in their outfits. James also exchanged his clothes for kit just to kick the ball around for a few minutes with the players and this was a fun affair. They invited us to go watch one of their games on the 26/05/2013 with their new kit, excited they were indeed. This was a really great experience for both my team members and I and we hope that we can always put a smile on those faces that are in need of our help.

The team welcomed us with kindness. They couldn’t believe they have their own kit. They were all excited. They said they have been writing letters to a lot of companies asking for kit, but they never received positive feedback. It’s their first time having their own kit and they know all other surrounding teams will be surprised seeing them with one. They used to borrow kit from other teams to play but that is now a thing of the past.

The Rangers Soccer Club is situated in Dysselsdorp, a small community just outside Oudtshoorn. The aim of the soccer club is to encourage the youth to get involved in sport, specifically soccer. The idea is to keep them away from things like drugs and alcohol. Most of the teams players are unemployed young men. They are very happy about this much needed sponsorship and want to thank Hollywood for always investing and giving back to the community.

The United Brothers Football Club has been in existence for over 30 years. The club is based in White Location in the northern suburbs of the greater Knysna municipal area. The mission of the club is to promote mass participation in local football. They also present life skills programmes to the young adults and the youth in the Knysna area. The club is also doing their best to keep the youth and young adults from substance abuse eg. drugs and alcohol abuse. With Hollywood sponsoring the team with much needed kit, the club believes these young adults will be proud going onto the soccer field and will only go from strength to strength.

clinton Binda (Hw)

There was never a time in his life when 47 year old Clinton Binda considered any career outside of horseracing. He was riding horses from the age of 6 and started following racing when he was 12. He went to America to learn to be a farrier and this has been a great advantage to him as he now shoes his own horses as a racing trainer. Together with his wife Sue, he is now firmly established on a plot near Muldersdrift, which is north of Fourways in Johannesburg, where he has built a beautiful track and stables that is home to his, roughly 50 horses. Clinton is hard-working and has achieved plenty in his career thus far with limited support. There isn’t much doubt that if he gets the support from bigger patrons, then that elusive Gr 1 win will materialize.

doRRie SHam (Hw)

Dorrie Sham (52) is probably best known as the owner of New Turf Carriers. After owning horses for quite some time, Dorrie took the bold decision to first link-up with veteran trainer Barry Steenkamp, in partnership, and

after the latter retired on 30 November

2012, she then began training in her own right at Fairview racecourse, where she trains 45 horses. The yard has enjoyed a great season in PE with 72 winners, 42 of which were in her own capacity. She rates the two-year old Mod Barley highly, along with seasoned campaigner I Got You Babe who has been ultra-consistent for the stable. She has recently acquired Two Gun Kid from Gauteng and is confident that he will do well in the ‘windy city’.

david RaHilly (Hw)

David Rahilly (45) is another on the long list of former jockey’s to have taken out a trainer’s licence. After a slow start to his training career, David has adapted well to the change and although he has a small string of just 24 horses based at the Vaal racecourse, he gets a good return from his runners. His best horse to date has been the stayer Power Lord who finished third behind Ilsanpietro in the Java Handicap of 2010. David singled out Sugar And Shake and Jewel Collection as horses to follow from his stable.

Glen pUlleR (Hw)

The Puller family are famous in horseracing circles and Glen (51) is the brother to legendary jockey Garth Puller. Glen’s stables are based at Milnerton and he has 40 horses in his care. He has enjoyed lots of success with fillies in the past and has won most of the Cape’s Fillies features. However, he has a bright

prospect in his yard this season, in the form of the Surging River colt, Awesome Power, whom he feels the public can follow with confidence in the future.

GaRtH pUlleR (Hw)

The legendary former jockey Garth Puller (62) has always been a great horseman and will forever be remembered for his two July triumphs aboard Over The Air and Bush Telegraph. He recorded a third July win aboard Gatecrasher but sadly lost the race in the boardroom after his horse hung badly in the closing stages. Hardly surprisingly, Garth has adjusted brilliantly to life as a trainer and now trains 50 horses at his Clairwood base. He is hoping to have his first runner as a trainer in the July this season as he aims to qualify the highly regarded Ice Machine. He also has high hopes for recent Grade 2 placed Corredor and Wind Trip.

BaRt Rice (Hw)

Bart Rice (36) originated from Zimbabwe and has set-up his stables at Ashburton where he trains 16 horses. He is still finding his way in the industry and has done fairly well with a limited string. Besides training horses, Bart races pigeons in his spare time. His biggest win to

date has been with Royal Day (now based in Mauritius) in the Listed Michaelmas Handicap. Some of his more promising horses are Wundabar, Masaveru and Tribaut.

cliFFie milleR (Hw)

Cliffie Miller (55) is Hollywood’s sole acquisition from the Northern Cape and he is based at Flamingo Park with a string of 60 horses. He was a miner before taking up the challenge of becoming a racehorse trainer and he has adjusted brilliantly. One of his better horses over the years has been Grandalea and Cliffie has earmarked all of Space Girl, Capital Gain, African Gladiator and Kingofmountain as horses the public can follow.

Kom naidoo (Hw)

The old cliché ‘taking to something like a duck to water’ certainly applies to Summerveld-based trainer Kom Naidoo (32) who moved from the motor industry to training horses with great success. Kom has gained a wealth of knowledge from retired top jockey Bertie Hayden

and current trainer Tony Rivalland. He has 100 horses at his Summerveld stables, of which he rates Royal Zulu Warrior, Gothic and Royal Security Baby the best. He also has a satellite yard based at the Vaal racecourse and he has enjoyed plenty of success, particularly on the sand where Furious Dancer won a feature for him, a few seasons ago. Kom has recently acquired the improving three-year old Gothic and aims to qualify him as his first runner in the country’s most prestigious race, the Vodacom Durban July.

deon viSSeR (Hw)

Deon Visser (48) was an assistant trainer for some time before making the bold move of moving on his own. He started off with seven horses which he owned outright and through plenty of success, he now has 40 horses in his care at his new

base at Ashburton. He has the backing of some well-known owners. One of his best horses, Bay Route (changed stables since) did Deon very proud and clearly announced his arrival within the training ranks. Deon’s runners have placed in Grade 1 company but he is still searching for that elusive Grade 1 win. He feels that the public can follow Time Of Song, Apple ‘n Spice and Marx Tiger from his yard.

StUaRt pettiGRew (Hw)

Stuart Pettigrew (49) has been around for some time and takes care of his 50 horses at Randjesfontein. He has won three Grade 1 races, with Golden Globe (Germiston November Handicap), Spiced Gold (SA Fillies Classic) and Tyson (Summer Cup), the last being the best horse he has ever trained. He

singled out the sand specialist Calanish and the smart stayer Salutation as the current better horses from his stable.

Riaan van Reenen (Hw)

Riaan van Reenen (42) is based at Philippi Training Centre in Cape Town where he has a small string of 20 horses that he gives his undivided attention to. He has won a good deal of feature races in the Cape, most notably, the

Colts and Fillies Nursery, Cape Summer Stayers Handicap, Olympic Duel Stakes, the Victress Stakes and the Final Fling Stakes (2x). He started off training Diana’s Choice, who subsequently performed very well on the international stage but his best horse ever has been Sweet Virginia who won two legs of the Winter Series in 2005. Some of his better horses currently are the stayer Barossa Valley and the speedy Effective Power.

Gavin SmitH (Hw)

Gavin Smith (46) is based at Fairview racecourse in the Eastern Cape and has an astounding 124 horses in his care. He has won most of the province’s big races and even won the KZN Breeders. The best horse he has ever trained is Bold Silvano, who famously joined the Mike de Kock ranks before winning the country’s most

prestigious race, the Vodacom Durban July. Gavin rates the now internationally bound Muscatt, Zobens and Sedge as the best horses from his yard during the current season.

lowan denySScHen (Hw)

Lowan Denysschen (35) is another young up and coming KZN trainer. He took over the Ashburton stables after his father; Paul’s passing on, a few years ago. Straight after school Lowan worked for trainer Paul Matchett in his hometown in Zimbabwe and he gained a wealth of experience during that time. His memorable achievements whilst working with his dad were winning the Durban Merchants with Sizzling Sauce and the Michaelmas and Easter Handicap with Rusedski.

paUl matcHett (Hw)

Paul Matchett (49) was champion trainer three times in Zimbabwe and won every feature race in his home country. His best horse back in Zimbabwe was Hide-Out.

He has taken very well to South African racing and is stabled at Randjesfontein where he has 60 horses in his care. His best horse in South Africa was Tiza who won the Grade 1 Golden Horseshoe at Scottsville, a few seasons ago, before leaving for international shores. He singled out the consistent sand performer Raise The Bar and the classy Fantastic Mr Fox as horses to follow from his stable.

GRant paddocK (Hw) Grant Paddock (42) took over the reigns after his father, Billy, passed on. He received his open licence in November 2009 and now trains 62 horses at his private establishment in the Eastern Cape. His biggest achievement to date has been winning the East Cape Nursery with Bartolini. His promising horses currently are Vivalda, Ivanka and Three Captains.

cRaiG eUdey (wF)

Winning Form-sponsored trainer Craig Eudey (54) has risen well since being assistant trainer to Alistair Gordon. His

best horse to date, Thandolwami announced Craig’s arrival to the trainer’s ranks when he finished third in the Gr 1 Champions Cup as well as twice runner-up in

the November Handicap, in Gauteng. His stables are based at Summerveld where he currently has 38 horses. Craig rates his younger horse Flyfirstclass as the best from his yard and also has a liking for the Bridget Oppenheimer owned filly, Pecan.

miKe aZZie (wF)

Michael Azzie (55), better known as the ‘Azzman’ is beyond doubt the most successful of our trainers on the Winning Form/Hollywood team. He comes from a family steeped in racing

tradition. His grandfather was the legendary George Azzie who trained great horses like Elevation, Caradoc and Hawaii, amongst others. Mike trains his 92 horses at Randjesfontein Training Centre with assistance from his son Adam and assistant Natalie. He has won 24 Grade 1 races in South Africa, including every Grade 1 Sprint race. The best horse he has ever trained was undoubtedly the great National Currency, who won most of the Grade 1 sprint races in South Africa, before enjoying a successful international campaign. Of course, Michael also trained the great sprinting filly, Harry’s Charm. He trains the brilliant sand specialist Pylon, and also rates Potala Palace and Masai Warrior highly.

denniS BoScH (wF)

Dennis Bosch (57) made his mark as a really top heavyweight jockey. He then became assistant trainer to Patrick Lunn and was involved with the top horse Model Man, before taking out his own licence. He is based at Clairwood and currently trains a small string of 25 horses. He has enjoyed some good success over the years and trained the speedy filly Noble Heir who

won the Grade 1 Computaform Sprint. The other top horses that have passed his hands are Cape Saffron and Flight Alert. He rates Cherry Tripper and Occhi Du Lupo highly and expects good things from them.

dUncan HowellS (wF)

Duncan Howells (46) was assistant trainer to the legendary David Payne (now plying his trade in Australia). He took out his

licence about fourteen years ago and has done very well with the help of his wife, Cathy, who is rumoured to have a great eye for a horse. His stables are based at Ashburton where he trains

75 horses. The best horse he has ever trained is the current sprinting sensation Via Africa and he also started out training the top filly Gypsy’s Warning, who then went on to be successful on the international stage. He also trained the Grade 1 Gold Medallion winner Zeeno who was sold overseas. Some of the other features he has picked up along the way are the Drill Hall Stakes and the Greyville 1900. He recently won the Grade 1 South African Fillies Sprint with Via Africa. He also rates all of One Cool Dude, My Sanctuary and Jamboree highly and feels that the public can follow the above-mentioned runners with plenty of confidence in the future.

winninG FoRm currently sponsors seven fully-fledged jockeys and one top class workrider. Arguably, the best of our seven jockeys is mUZi yeni (26) who gained plenty of experience early on in his career riding for champion trainer Mike de Kock. Muzi won his first Grade 1 when Happy

Landing won the Presidents Champions Challenge two seasons ago. His best finishing position was a very creditable fourth in the country’s most prestigious race, the Vodacom Durban July Handicap in 2009

with Thundering Jet for trainer Mike Bass. Undoubtedly though, his biggest claim to fame must certainly be his third-placed finish on the 2010/2011 National Jockey’s Log. Muzi currently lies in sixth place in this season’s standings with 109 winners, despite missing a full two months of the season due to injury.

S’manGa KHUmalo (27) is arguably the most naturally gifted rider of our team. S’manga, nicknamed ‘doctor’ by many has quickly shot to prominence and partnered the great filly Dancewiththedevil to earlier Grade 1 victories in the Horse Chestnut and Empress Club Stakes. He has already won many Grade 1 races during his short career and rode a brilliant race from the front when winning the Grade 1 Summer Cup aboard Wagner, in early December. Khumalo also produced the July hopeful Heavy Metal at the perfect time to win another Grade

1 this season, this time in the President’s Champions Challenge, again at Turffontein.

A more recent acquisition to our stable is tSHwaRo appie (23) who became a fully-fledged jockey just over a year ago. He has ridden with much success for the top yards of Mike de Kock and Sean Tarry and has even done track work on the great filly Igugu. He has won four races aboard the consistent Meadow Magic and partnered the gelding when finishing fourth in the Grade 3 Jubilee Handicap of 2012. He teamed up with the great unbeaten globetrotting Soft Falling Rain in his first three local victories.

lUcian aFRica (27) is hard-working and has a never-say-die attitude. He doesn’t get the best of rides but makes use of any opportunity that comes his way. He won the Christmas Handicap on Orbit War in 2011.

Kendall minnie (27) is based in Port Elizabeth where he has linked-up well with the prominent yard of trainer Alan Greeff. With Port Elizabeth racing taking place just once a week, it is hard to have a steady flow of winners but Kendall generally arrives at long-odds.

BRian nyawo (25) has had a quiet time of late and recently relocated to Gauteng after a brief spell in the Western Cape. He hasn’t yet captured any major races but has been associated with Bound By Honour who ran

third in the 2008 Vodacom Durban July.

xolani “cHaRleS” ndlovU ( 29) is another acquisition from Port Elizabeth and he is also part of the Alan Greeff set-up. He does much of the behind the scenes work at the yard. He seldom gets the first choice rides but grabs every small opportunity with both hands.

For the second year in succession WINNING FORM has sponsored the hard-working workrider, FRanciS Semela (27). After a highly successful first season with his new sponsor, Semela raised his game to greater heights as he recently won the Workrider’s Series by a huge point’s margin. He received the Workrider Of The Year Award at a recent Racing Association Awards Ceremony. He does ride work for the top Gauteng yards of Mike de Kock, Sean Tarry and Mike Azzie, at their Randjesfontein Stables. Semela has even flown out with Mike de Kock to ride work on his horses in Dubai and has been associated with some top horses such as Igugu, Irish Flame and Potala Palace.
