Have fun with the LA Chapter of the UNM Alumni Association as we take a superb tour of one of the fascinating highlights of Los Angeles - The St. Sophia Cathedral (http://www.stsophia.org ), followed by what can only be described as an afternoon in Athens – lunch at the nearby Greek Deli - Papa Cristo’s, which is proclaimed to have the best Greek food west of the Acropolis. The tour will be conducted by UNM alumnus, Father John Bakas. Father John is a wealth of information and has become a local legend. He has served as the Dean of St. Sophia Cathedral and the Greek Orthodox Community in Los Angeles since 1995. Along with the leadership of the Cathedral, he spearheaded the drive for the major renovation of the Cathedral grounds and adjacent buildings. This renovation and renewal has spawned the redevelopment of the surrounding area into what is now the Byzantine-Latino Quarter of Los Angeles. 10:30 a.m. Tour begins, followed by a no-host lunch at Papa Cristo’s across the street. St. Sophia is located at 1324 S. Normandie Ave. in LA (Normandie exit of the 10 freeway – go N. about ¾ mi.) Pepper’s album! It was 40 years ago that the seminal Beatles album ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ was released, forever changing history. Join in the fun as the evening’s very special house band, ‘Cheap Trick’, special guest vocalists Aimee Mann and Joan Osborne and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra perform the album in its entirety. Our seats are in Section M2 and include a seat cushion for $30 p.p. Upcoming Activities August 3 – 5 Deep Sea Fishing Adventure – Depart San Diego on Friday night and return Sunday Evening. Fishing gear, tackle and meals are provided! September 9 – LA Chapter Green Chili Roast and Picnic – 15 th Annual Chile Fest! Over a Ton of Hatch Green Chile will be roasted! Coupled with a fabulous barbecue with sides and you are in for a memorable day! September 15 – Lobos at Arizona – Chapter Road Trip to Tucson for Tailgate, Football and Fun. OK – the road may be the friendly skies – but fun is Guaranteed! October 20 – Lobos at SDSU – Chapter Road Trip to San Diego for more Tailgate, Football and Fun! Tailgate starts at 3:30 p.m. followed by the game at 5:30 p.m. December 8 – Chapter Tour of Getty Villa in Malibu – Holiday Fun!
