What is Poetry?

Poetry is a river, poem after poem moves along in the exciting crests and falls of the the river waves. None is timeless; each arrives in an historical context, almost everything, in the end, passes.

What is Poetry? My Definition!

Poetry is .…a way of expressing the writers feelings or beliefs.

It is also a way of amusing children

Acrostic

The word acrostic is formed from the Greek word acros (outermost) and stichos (line of poetry).  The acrostic is a poem where the first letter of each line forms a word when you read them looking downward.

Haiku

n COMPOSING A TRADITIONAL JAPANESE HAIKU POEMn The 300-year old Haiku Poem has its own distinct

discipline:- Each complete poem has only three lines, totalling 17 syllables.

- the first line must be five syllables- the second line must be seven syllables- the third line must be five syllables

When these rigid conditions are met, the result can be a very satisfying word picture .

Cinquain poems come in three formats:

Diamante

A diamante is a seven line poem, shaped like a diamond. Free Verse

n Does not have to rhyme n Does not have to have a specific

rhythm n Has no specific length n Makes use of figurative speech

Free Verse Tools

n Metaphor – suggests a similarity between two things The road snakes around the mountain.

n Simile – highlights the comparison between two things using like, as, resembles, etc.         

The stars in the night sky were like sparkling diamonds.n Personification – giving human characteristics to things which are clearly not

human                   

The outboard motor cleared its throat.n Alliteration – repeating words with the same beginning sound

Thomas tied two turnips to two tall trees. n Imagery – using vivid, descriptive words to conjure up an image       

The car sped. - The flashy, yellow, mustang  streaked like         a bullet along the highway.

n Onomatopoeia – using words that sound like what they mean        

He slurped his soup. n Hyperbole – using exaggeration to make a point       

Make me a sundae a mile high.

Colors are every where

in the sea,

when the sun shines on it.

in the grass,

when the dew sparkles.

in the sky,

when the clouds make shapes.

So, as I couldn’t think of anything else,

I suppose I will.

But what shall i write about about Krysten?

Her ears?

No. Definitely not.

The Hypothetical Baby

While it sleeps, there is peace,

In my heart and head.

What if it should wake up in the night,

Steal my sense with its longing,

Make itself present with a tiny bit of desire?

Who will comfort it then,

Stop the wailing of a soul unfulfilled,

Keep it from feeling unloved, alone?

Better to ignore it, let it learn

There is not always room in the big bed.

It will stop crying in a while.

It always does.
