Our Mission
To inspire and empower at-risk young people by
building a holistic foundation of critical skills and experiences.
December 2014
As a new year eclipses, H.O.O.P. stabilizes its mission,. “To inspire and empower at-risk young
people by building a holistic foundation of critical skills and experiences. Through HOOP’s
efforts, over 2,500 vulnerable and low-income members of our community were served as we aided in
their healthy active lifestyle.
The 2014 restructuring of our programs to include younger participants has increased participation!
The new motto PASS IT, will sustain our future involvement in the lives of our local neighborhood.
PASS IT! - Physical, Academic, Social, Spiritual, with Integrity and Truth.
In addition, new focused members were infused to the Board of Directors and staff to ensure proper
governance of the organization’s programs, mission, finances and goals. The pursuit of sustainable
progress is much clearer in 2015.
Our landmark events, the Los Angeles Million Father March, in its 5th year produced new territory,
fostered new partners and identified new resources. Our Partnership with Venice Beach League to
produce Kids Venice Beach League- Summer Camp rejuvenated the organization and continues to
breathe life into the configuration of future endeavors. The Annual Shoes to Fill- Toy Drive, over
achieved expectations, forged new relationships and served less fortunate children and families during
the Holiday Season.
Like all non profits which provide community social services, we are under unvarying demands to
secure economic support. Watchful of these disadvantages, we modestly explore for the continual
support of agencies, business and the community.
Out of obligation we recognize and thank all of H.O.O.P.’s community partners, donors, supporters and
volunteers. Most important, we extend our gratitude to the community members who have
participated in our programs and events for giving us the opportunity to serve.
Sincerely,
Les Jones Bryan C. Jones
Chairman Executive Director
Who We Are
A California nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization serving
socially and economically disadvantaged youth in
South Los Angeles and Inglewood.
Founded in 2008, H.O.O.P’s objective has been to
empower youth and their families with the tools for
self-sufficiency through sports.
We engage youth in activities that teach and
promote self-awareness, team-building, and
confidence-modeling to reduce high risk behaviors
that may put them on a path to incarceration or
unhealthy lifestyles.
P. A. S. S. I. T. --- P. A. S. S. I. T. Physical Skills * Academic Skills * Social Skills
* Spiritual Skill With Integrity and Truth
Promote Physical and Healthy Lifestyle Skills: The
observation and recording of our youth progress in participating in
an on-going regimen of regular exercises and the changes in their
eating habits will measure the success of our program. Students will
receive fitness tests and routine health screenings performed by
licensed professionals.
Improve Academic Skills: Youth are required to submit their
grade cards to enter our programs. Youth and their parent/guardian
contractually agree to submit all subsequent grade cards to HOOP
as long as the youth is participating in our programs. HOOP
coaches, tutors and mentors will review the grade card with the
youth and prepare an action plan to help them improve their grades.
Records of improved grades will measure the success of our
program.
Develop Social Skills and Cultural Awareness: The
observation and recording of our youth behavior in life skills
training, tournaments, culmination events and community outreach
events will measure the success of our programs. Respect, positive
sportsmanship, teamwork, positive self-image and confidence are
the fundamentals we are measuring. Our How-To sessions will
measure their ability to provide encouragement and leadership skills
to each other in the program. Our ultimate goal is for our youth to
be able to connect with youth from all walks of life. Although they
may have very different views, they may be able to develop mutual
relationships.
Enhance Spiritual Skills: The observation of our youth’s change in
attitude and conversation during the Life Skills program will measure
the success of our program. We will measure our youth based on
their growth in knowing their reality and being able to motivate their
peers in spite of. We will measure our youth based on their
willingness to participate in our community outreach events. HOOP’s
goal is for youth to recognize the importance of service before self.
Instill Integrity and Truth: HOOP will assist our youth in
developing their personal goals plan. We will review the plan with the
youth and their parents. We will allow the youth the opportunity to
change their plan as needed. Our measure of success will be the
youth’s ability to be honest and accountable for their personal goals.
True leadership recognizes that things will change and integrity and
truth allows you to successfully adapt to those changes in a positive
manner.
At the completion of their programs, we celebrate our youth’s
victories at our HOOP Foundation Annual Gala for our Sports,
Tutoring and Life Skills Programs, a Fashion Show for our Beautiful
Anointed Daughters Program and a Certificate Celebration for our
Summer Sports Camp. These events provide the opportunity to
acknowledge our youth for their participation and achievements in
the presence of their family and peers.
What We Do
H.O.O.P. provides positive
alternatives through sports to
promote academic achievement
and character development.
How We Do It
H.O.O.P offers a safe environment
where youth can learn, compete,
laugh, and explore with caring
adults. Using sporting recreational
activities, we engage youth in
academic and peer supports,
including but not limited,
tournaments, tutoring, and
mentoring to put them on a
trajectory of success.
Program Director: Bryan Jones
Problem to Address: Sports are one of the top interest
programs for at-risk youth in the underserved communities
of Inglewood and Los Angeles, California. However, there
are few safe, available places for organized, supervised, and
quality sports training experiences. Our program provides a
constructive, positive alternative for potentially at-risk
children and youth, instead of violence, drugs and on-street
activities.
Our youth lack the opportunity to participate in organized
sports activities that provide the exercise they need to fight
health issues of obesity and diabetes. A Recent United
States statistic on obesity as reported in Inglewood Today,
February 6, 2014 issue stated the incidence of obesity at
age 14 was highest among black children (17%) followed by
Hispanics (14%)

Problem to Address: The average size of today’s classrooms is
30 students. At-risk youth in the underserved communities in
Inglewood and Los Angeles, California are getting lost in the crowd
and making the decision to drop out. At-risk youth are dropping
out of school as early as age 12.
According to the California Department of Education Data
Reporting Office, Dropouts by Grade and Ethnicity Report for
2011-2012 in Inglewood and Los Angeles Unified School Districts:
• 1,881 African American students in grades 7th through 12th
dropped out.
• 8,273 Hispanic students in grades 7th through 12TH dropped out.
Measurable Successful Outcomes:
The progress and success of all HOOP programs will be measured
quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative evaluations will
include: enrollment, measurable improvements and retention rates.
The qualitative evaluations will include surveys on the general
feedback on our programs.
HOOP programs require the youth’s current report card and a
three-tier contractual agreement between the youth, their
parents/guardians and our coaches and mentors as follows to
confirm their full commitment to the programs:
1. Youth commit to attend, practice and study while participating in
our programs.
2. Parents/guardians commit to encourage and support the youth.
3. Tutors and Mentors ensure their commitment to our youth and
programs.
HOOP works
with local High
School and
Middle School
students in the
community to
assess strengths
and
weaknesses.
One objective
includes,

Mentors to

Shoes to Fill
Shoes to Fill- Toy Drive Charity Basketball Game
This program was sponsored by the H.O.O.P. Foundation, in conglomeration with Inglewood High School, Venice Basketball League All- Stars and several other entities in the non-profit, civic and business sectors.
This campaign featured a simplistic, inexpensive, yet effective fundraising drive, as well as an event to raise awareness to the need for assisting veteran fathers and their families.
This campaign mirrors the purpose of the H.O.O.P. Foundation in its efforts to provide mentorship and fill the gap for the children in our community.
This Annual campaign requests that each person donate a minimum of one US dollar per their shoe size (ex. A person wearing a size 7 shoe will donate 7 US dollars)
