is ready for dispatch

We live in a world of cloud computing and online storage. the whole world is digitally reachable on your finger tip. Smartphones and I-pads have taken the place of

Dictionaries and Encyclopedias. the social network media has made the communication much easier. However, even in the cyber-era the need for documentation and archives have not been minimized. Any serious establishment still has a system of filing and archiving. A book of reference and an instrument of data or in modern terms an organized data-bank in a printed form will serve future generations.

the Diocese of Faridabad, though in its initial stages, was particular to have a systematic data base and a directory with all available details. It is all the more pertinent for a diocese with a large territory of one million sq. km area extended in six states of Delhi, Haryana, punjab, Himachal pradesh, Gautam Budh Nagar Noida and Ghaziabad districts of Utter pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir. Especially being in the capital city of India, such a book of reference would serve all those who seek information about the diocese from far and near. As far as possible, we have included also email contact of every priest and religious personnel, as well as all institutions.

I take this opportunity to felicitate all those who collaborated with this initiative and thank the editorial board for their hard work. Being the first edition Rev. Fr. Paul Raj Kodiyan contacted all priests and religious personnel and collected every possible information. Mrs. Laly Antony did the page setting and remaining editing work. My sincere thanks to Rev. Fr. Kodiyan and Mrs. Laly Antony.

As a first step, it may contain some statistical inaccuracies or data imperfections. please make use of the yellow page supplied therein and point out the mistakes of entries. The editorial team stands ready to make necessary modifications for the next edition.

-6-SANTH MEMessenger January - February 2015

the first public reactions to U.S. president Barack Obama’s soul-stirring “Address to the people of India” at the Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi before winding up his three-day historic trip to the

country on January 27 have, rather predictably, displayed a binary logic. A good section instantly saw in Mr. Obama’s candid views on “dealing with diversity of beliefs and of faiths” and the need to uphold the constitutionally guaranteed ‘Right to Freedom of Religion’ without fear of persecution or discrimination, a well-meant yet stinging reminder to the Narendra Modi-led BJP Government to rein in its religious fundamentalist elements. But an equally vocal section seemed to resent his homily to a nation whose “Sanatana Dharma has been extremely tolerant” of all religions. However, holistically there is more substance to Mr. Obama’s 34-minute speech, set in the context of two emerging scenarios. First, the possibility that America can be “India’s best partner” in a whole range of activities including the ‘next wave’ of economic growth, and second, at a more personal level how India for Mr. Obama represents “an intersection of two men who have always inspired me” — Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi — in striving for equity and peace in a non-violent way.

It is from this perceptual bedrock that the American president has sought to re-engage India on a much wider socio-political canvas of cultural pluralism and religious diversity under an overarching universal humanism. Mr. Obama’s admission that “in our lives, Michelle and I have been strengthened by our Christian faith”, may at best elevate traditional religious notions like ‘God’ and ‘all of humanity being God’s children’, to a secular plane in a complex, interdependent world in guarding against sectarian divisions and dark violence which threaten to rapidly undermine ‘foundational human values’. this universalism for Mr. Obama, looking beyond “any difference in religion or tribe and rejoice in the beauty of every soul,” seem to be first premises for articulating a new global ethic of peace and harmony. The entry point may be Hinduism, christianity, Islam or any other faith, but the goal is enabling ‘compassion and empathy’ in human affairs. this is a utopian task, but this is what ‘world leaders’ like India and the U.S. should be doing, he hinted. the late philosopher-president Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, in his work, the Spirit of Religion said: “the world has got together as a body; it is groping for its soul… If we can have a United Nations Organization, cannot we have a United Religions Organization?” Mr. Obama’s plea for religious freedom aims to give that vision a chance under very different circumstances.Editorial, The Hindu, January 30, 2015Underlining by SM Editor

“mOdi’s dangerOus silence”

We give below the full text of the Editorial published in The New York Times on February 6, 2015 about our Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi’s continued silence regarding recent attacks at Christian places of worship in India and hard line Hindu nationalist groups like VHP and RSS homecoming campaign “Ghar Vaapsi”.

What will it take for prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak out about the mounting violence against India’s religious minorities? Attacks at christian places of worship have prompted no response from

the man elected to represent and to protect all of India’s citizens. Nor has he addressed the mass conversion to Hinduism of christians and Muslims who have been coerced promised money. Mr. Modi’s continued silence before such troubling intolerance increasingly gives the impression that he either cannot or does not wish to control the fringe elements of the Hindu nationalist right.

Recently, a number of christian churches in India have been burned and ransacked. Last December, St. Sebastian’s Church in East Delhi was engulfed in fire. Its pastor reported a strong smell of kerosene after the blaze was put out. On Monday, St. Alphonsa’s church in New Delhi was vandalized. ceremonial vessels were taken, yet collection boxes full of cash were untouched. Alarmed by the attacks, the catholic Bishops’ conference of India has urged the government to uphold the secular nature of India and to assure its christians they are “protected and secure” in their own country.

there is also concern about the mass conversions. Last December, about 200 Muslims were converted to Hinduism in Agra. In January, up to 100 christians in West Bengal “reconverted” to Hinduism. Hard-line Hindu nationalist groups, like the Vishwa Hindu parishad (VHp) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), make no secret of their support for a “homecoming” campaign designed to “return” non-Hindus to the fold. More than 80 per cent of Indians are Hindu, but pravin togadia of the VHp says his organization’s goal is a country that is 100 per cent Hindu. the only way to achieve that is to deny religious minorities their faith.

the VHp is reportedly planning a mass conversion of 3,000 Muslims in Ayodhya this month. the destruction of the Babri Mosque there in 1992 by Hindu militants touched off riots between Hindus and Muslims across India that left more than 2,000 people dead. The VHP knows it is playing with fire.

Mr. Modi has promised an ambitious agenda for India’s development. But, as President Obama observed in a speech in New Delhi last month: “India will succeed so long as it is not splintered along the lines of religious faith.” Mr. Modi needs to break his deafening silence on religious intolerance.

-10-SANTH MEMessenger January - February 2015

It is a matter of grave concern that re-conversion events are being held under the label of ‘Ghar Wapsi’. A secular

society like ours cannot encourage conversions either by force or inducement. Shocking reports are emerging from different parts of the country, especially Uttar pradesh, Gujarat and chepad and Anchal in Kerala. the hate campaign and divisiveness in the name of conversions would deeply hurt the sentiments of a secular society. In the name of conversions, it would destroy the secular fabric and values of our nation. I express my strong concern on this issue. putting an end to such dangerous tendencies is inevitable for the growth and progress of the nation. I strongly urge the Honorable prime Minister Narendra Modi to urgently intervene to address people’s concerns over such “forcible conversions” rampant in the country.

the church never supports forcible conversions. the constitutional provisions and legal mechanisms do exist in our country to curb and prevent forcible conversions. the Government should take stringent steps to stop re-conversions under the provisions of the existing law. It is imperative that Government initiate actions in this regard with the existing legal systems. I sense that the move for a new law, is pre-planned and is contrary to the rights, enshrined in the constitution of our country. the Government must protect the rights, guaranteed by the constitution and ensure the freedom of religion and belief. It is therefore high time that our nation sheds all differences and strives in unison to face the challenges posed by religious fundamentalism and terrorism.

India can reasonably claim prestigious achievements in Science and Information technology. It has enhanced the image of our nation in the international community. But the recent incidents in the name of religious conversions portray a negative image and signals unhealthy message to the international community.

christmas Day was celebrated as a National holiday for centuries. the move to replace christmas Day with Good Governance Day by the Government is indeed unfortunate and highly objectionable. this decision is largely painful not only to the christian community, but to all the citizens of this country. We earnestly therefore request our honorable prime Minister to positively create an atmosphere of peace and Harmony in this season of christmas.

O most holy apostle, Saint Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honour and invoke thee universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, and of things almost despaired of.Pray for me, who am so miserable. Make use, I implore thee, of that particular privilege accorded to thee, to bring visible and speedy help where help was almost despaired of.Come to mine assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolation and succor of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (here make your request) and that I may praise God with thee and all the elect throughout eternity.I promise thee, O blessed Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favour, to always honour thee as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to thee.Amen.

-13-SANTH MEMessengerJanuary - February 2015

Since last 23 November, the day of the Canonization in Rome of Saint Chavara Kuriakose Elias and Saint Euphrasia, many have been the celebrations of thanksgiving to the

Lord for the gift of these 2 exemplary saints to the Universal Church and in particular to the Church in India.

The Pope’s Representative in India, in my humble person, could not fail to be present at this important ecclesial event, to thank the Lord for the Saints Kuriakose Elias and Euphrasia, promoted together by the Syro-Malabar Church, here well represented by His Eminence Cardinal George Alencherry, the CBCI, represented by the First Vice-President Mar Andrews Thazath and, its Secretary General, H.E. Albert D’Souza, the CMI Congregation, represented by the Superior General Fr. Paul Achandy, and the CMC Congregation, represented by the Superior General, Sister Sancta.

I greet fraternally and thank for the invitation Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, Bishop of Faridabad, Msgr. Sebastian Vadakumpadan, General Convener of this well organized event, and all of you, my dear brothers and sisters, faithful of the Diocese of Faridabad, always so joyful and rich in faith. In a special way I greet all the parishioners of this parish, Saint Chavara Kuriakose parish Hari Nagar.

I am in your midst you today, as the Representative of Pope Francis, and my presence here is the testimony of the love and affection of Pope Francis for all of you. Therefore, it is my privilege to communicate to you his special Apostolic Greetings and Blessings.

I congratulate all of you as you celebrate the historic event of the Canonization of the two new Indian saints. I also congratulate the Congregation of Mary Immaculate (CMI) and the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC), which have molded the two saints for us.

Both of them led a saintly life and are a model for us. St. Chavara Kuriakose Elias was also a social reformer. Though he hailed from an upper caste Syrian Christian family, he played a major role in educating the people of the lower ranks of society.

St. Euphrasia was a person of constant prayer, with deep devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and becoming known as the “Praying Mother”. She used to spend much of her day in the convent chapel before the Blessed Sacrament, to which she had a strong devotion.

It is gratifying to see that the Church in India , following the examples of these saints, contribute substantially in spheres of spirituality, education, health care, and many other important fields. Carry on with full vigor and enthusiasm!!!

In the light of the example of the two new Indian saints I would like also to praise the Indian Church for its great zeal in witnessing the Gospel Message in India and in many other countries of the world. This witness of love and faith must always be given in a spirit of sincere and respectful dialogue, harmony and appreciation with all our brothers and sisters of different faith and religions, building up bridges and ties of mutual fraternity and peaceful solidarity, for a better society.

May the holiness of St. Chavara ad St. Euphrasia inspire you to commit yourselves to be always ‘Persons of Joy’, filled with the “Joy of the Gospel”. As Pope Francis writes in the Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium: “The joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus”.

May our Holy Mother Mary guide you to contemplate and encounter her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and to live with joy and fidelity in our life. May God bless you, and once again thank you for your kind invitation.

With these words, I inaugurate this public meeting.Thank you.

Manila, philippines Weighing in on January 7, 2015 terror in France and the debate over

freedom of expression it stirred, pope Francis said en route to the philippines that killing "in the name of God" is wrong, but it is also wrong to "provoke" people by belittling their religion.

"One cannot make war (or) kill in the name of one's own religion," Francis said on his way to the philippines. "... to kill in the name of God is an aberration." Still, even as he decried the violence and generally spoke in support of freedom of expression,

the pontiff said that such freedom must have its limits.Pope Francis in the Philippines

Francis said on his flight from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Manila that everyone had not only the liberty, but also the obligation, "to say what he thinks to help the common good."

But he added that this should be done without giving offense, because human dignity should be respected.

"One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people's faith, one cannot make fun of faith."

Just Following the Gospel, says Pope

i'm Not a Communist,

calling for the movements to "keep up the fight" for workers' rights, the pope said: "Let's say together with our heart: no family without a roof, no peasant farmer without land, no worker without rights, no person without dignified labour!"

“Land, roof, and work … It’s odd, but for some, if I talk about these [subjects], it turns out the pope is a communist,” Francis quipped.

“the fact that the love for the poor is in the center of the gospel is misunderstood,” he said. “Those [values] for which you’re fighting for are sacred rights. It’s the church’s social doctrine.”

He also strayed into the political, saying that grassroots movements around the world "express the urgent need to revitalise our democracies, which are often held hostage by numerous factors".

the pope’s remarks follow years of speculation about his political affiliation, in the wake of a number of public demands that governments redistribute social benefits to the needy, and call for his church to be a “poor church, for the poor”.

“Marxist ideology is wrong. But I have met many Marxists in my life who are good people, so I don’t feel offended,” he said. “there is nothing in the Exhortation that cannot be found in the social doctrine of the church.”

Pope Francis denied being a communist at a meeting in Rome, saying that he simply

urges activism against the “structural causes” of poverty, and follows Christian doctrine.

The pope made the remarks while addressing the World Meeting of Popular Movements which is holding a conference in Rome to discuss problems facing the poor and the unemployed.

Free expression doesn't mean right to insult others' faith:
