By Jacqueline SpendloveTV Media

Christmas is a time of warmth, familytogetherness and goodwill towards one’sfellow man. It’s also inarguably a time for

shiny new toys, as any kid on the “nice” list will bequick to inform you.

What franchise could transfer more readily intothe season of giving (and getting!) than “Toy Story?”Since the first film in the Pixar trilogy broughtsmiles to the faces of children and adults alikenearly 20 years ago, young Andy’s toys have goneon to feature in two sequels, three animated shorts,an animated spinoff film and series, a pile of videogames and, as of this holiday season, two televisionspecials.

The first of these specials, “Toy Story of Terror!”,is Halloween-based and first aired last October onABC. Like the films, the special was well-receivedby audiences and drew in favorable reviews fromcritics, proving that, 18 years after the original filmwas released, the “Toy Story” franchise still hadn’trun out of steam.

By all reports, the upcoming television specialpromises to deliver the same high quality of hu-mor, story and character development as its ever-growing list of forerunners. “Toy Story That TimeForgot” places the playthings we’ve come to knowand love right where toys belong: the Christmasseason. This eagerly anticipated latest installmentin the “Toy Story” world premieres Tuesday, Dec. 2,on ABC.

“Toy Story That Time Forgot” actually takes placeshortly after Christmas, when Bonnie (Emily Hahn,“Wreck-It Ralph,” 2012), the little girl who becamethe new owner of Andy’s toys at the end of “ToyStory 3” (2010), heads to a playdate at a pal’s house. Here, the “Toy Story” gang encounters a line ofgladiator-like dinosaur action figures called Battle-saurs, which come with impressive playsets andare led by the confident and sophisticated ReptillusMaximus (Kevin McKidd, “Grey’s Anatomy”).

Unfortunately, the Battlesaurs harbor BuzzLightyear-esque delusions and don’t realize they’retoys — despite their recently opened packagingstrewn about the room, still festooned with bitsof hastily-torn wrapping paper. Though hostile to-wards the majority of the interlopers, the cool newaction figures recognize Bonnie’s dinosaur toys Rexthe T-Rex (Wallace Shawn, “The Princess Bride,”

1987) and Trixie the triceratops (Kristen Schaal, “30Rock”) as members of their own kind, going so faras to suit them up in some of their rad battle gear.

It’s really Trixie who takes the forefront in thisstory, so it’ll be great to see one of the previoussupporting characters in a leading role. It’s up tothe quirky triceratops to get herself and her friendsaway from the Battlesaurs’ clutches and back to thesafety of Bonnie’s room.

Old favorites will be back as well, including Buzz(Tim Allen, “Home Improvement”), Woody (TomHanks, “The Green Mile,” 1997), Jessie (Joan Cusack,“High Fidelity,” 2000) and Mr. Potato Head (DonRickles, “CPO Sharkey”), plus another new character,a Christmas ornament called Angel Kitty (Cusack).

“Why am I such a misfit? I am notjust a nitwit. Just because my noseglows... why don’t I fit in?”

Rudolph heartbreakingly laments his friendshiptroubles outside his den after the Reindeer Gamessaw him laughed at and shunned because of hisbright, shiny nose. It has turned out to be some-what ironic that Rudolph had difficulty makingfriends early in life, as millions of people over fivedecades have fallen in love with one of television’smost iconic Christmas characters.

The oddball reindeer actually came from humblebeginnings on the pages of a Montgomery Wardcoloring book in 1939. Penned by staff copywriterRobert L. May, the plucky reindeer went throughmultiple names — Rollo and Reginald, to name acouple — before he became Rudolph, and Mont-gomery Ward ended up selling over two millioncopies of the coloring book that year.

Rudolph didn’t make the jump to television rightaway, though. Ten years after May wrote the story,he approached his brother-in-law, songwriter JohnnyMarks, who then adapted it into a song. It was duringthe 1949 holiday season that Gene Autry’s “Rudolphthe Red-Nosed Reindeer” topped charts, marking thefirst step in Rudolph’s ascension to popularity.

Enter Rankin/Bass Productions. Founded in Sep-tember 1960 by Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass,

the film production company got to work rightaway, pitching Hollywood bigwigs their animationtechnique called “Animagic.”

Their first project was “Rudolph,” and it was thespecial that launched Rankin/Bass to success in theholiday television market. Oddly enough though,“Rudolph” almost didn’t happen.

“In America they used to say ‘Go West, young

man’ to people seeking their fortunes,” Rankin saidonce, as reported by Bernews.com. “Well, I followedthat advice — and had every door in Hollywoodclosed in my face when I pitched the concept of‘Rudolph’ back in the early ‘60s. No one was inter-ested.”

So Rankin/Bass kept going West and ended upin Japan, where “Rudolph” and many of their other

holiday specials were crafted. The studio in Japanhad the technology available to make “Rudolph”the way Rankin/Bass wanted to create it, and therest went down in history.

Now, 50 years later, “Rudolph the Red-NosedReindeer” is a Christmas institution. The 55-min-ute production is the highest-rated and longest-running television special of all time, airing mostlyon CBS and its affiliates multiple times over theholiday season.

Of course, everyone knows the story of Santa’sninth reindeer, so there’s no need to rehash it. Butwhen you look at the narrative and really dissectits meaning, you can see how this account of acouple of misfits has stood the test of time.

Rankin/Bass Productions used Rudolph, Hermeyand their eccentricities to send a message to kidsof all ages that it’s ok to be different. It’s possible toachieve great things even if you’re the underdog.

“I think all kids are looking for guidance,”Rankin said in an interview with the Archive ofAmerican Television. “I think all kids feel slightlyinferior. Kids have problems, whatever they maybe, and to see other characters that also have prob-lems, they can associate with them.”

“Kids love to see someone of their own stripe, their own age or their own inferiority achievethings. It makes them feel good,” he continued. “Ithink that’s probably the reason these films lastso long because in all our films that happens. Thebad guy becomes the good guy at the end, he’sreformed, and the underdog fulfills his quest.”

While the universal feel-good story does definite-ly lend to “Rudolph’s” longevity, it’s also the catchymusic sprinkled throughout the show that makes ita timeless classic.

Johnny Marks, the writer of the original “Ru-dolph” song and Rankin’s neighbor when theyboth lived in Greenwich Village, was brought in by

Rankin/Bass to compose the entire soundtrack forthe TV special. From the love ballad “There’s Al-ways Tomorrow” to the perky “A Holly Jolly Christ-mas,” the songs are as enduring as the show itself.

It also helps the music when you have a name likeBurl Ives belting out tunes and narrating the story. The legendary American actor and singer brought acertain life to the words and melody of the special’scarols, including “Silver and Gold” and “A Holly JollyChristmas,” and his character — Sam the Snowman— even bears a striking resemblance to him.

Another thing that made “Rudolph” stand out, especially at the time, was the use of what Rankin/Bass coined as “Animagic.” Typically in stop mo-tion, filmmakers would use clay to create charac-ters and settings, animating them by molding andshaping the different pieces. With Animagic, wire-jointed dolls were used instead, with each piecemoved on the joint for each frame.

Because of the nature of stop-motion animation, the filming of “Rudolph” took quite a while to com-plete. Animagic was new and exciting at the time, but in an interview with the “Washington Post” in2004, Rankin insisted the show was about morethan just the animation technique, saying, “It’s thestory, the characters, the music. We knew what weneeded: warmth. ‘Rudolph’ showed us that.”

Undoubtedly, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”has shown us many things. First and foremost, ithas proven that even a spunky, misfit reindeer cancapture the hearts and minds of children of all agesfor five decades.

Sadly, with time comes some sorrow, and thisChristmas will be a little duller after Arthur RankinJr. passed away in January, but his legacy lives oneach time Rudolph and the gang spring onto our TVsets. For Rankin, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I’m always pleased by success, and I’m alwayssurprised by it,” he told the Archive of American

Television in 2005. “Why has ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ been on the air for more than40 years? The longest-running, highest-rated filmin the history of the medium? I don’t know theanswer to that. But over the last few years, I’vebecome very honored by that... I guess that is mylegacy. Longevity is the answer for art.”

Lovely longhand: Love Actually (2003)Towards the end of the movie,

Mark (Andrew Lincoln) poses as agroup of carolers and professeshis love to the recently mar-ried Juliet (Keira Knightley)with a series of poster boards. The messages — such as “Tome, you are perfect” and “Mywasted heart will love you” —were actually handwritten byLincoln, so that’s his own chickenscratch on the posters.

Accidental improvement: It’s aWonderful Life(1946)

This Oscar nominated holiday classic has stood the testof time, but at one point in the movie, an inebriated UncleBilly (Thomas Mitchell) is having a bit of trouble stand-ing himself. As he wishes George (James Stewart) a goodnight and stumbles off screen, you hear a crash and thenUncle Billy says, “I’m alright.” It turns out that the crashwas actually a crew member dropping equipment duringfilming, but director Frank Capra thought it “improvedthe sound” so he kept it in.

Wings ‘n’ things: It’s aWonderful Life (1946)The line “Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings”

is arguably one of the most iconic quotes from a Christ-mas movie ever. George (James Stewart) smiles when hisdaughter says it at the end of the film, as it means Clar-ence (Henry Travers) finally got his guardian angel wingsafter over 200 years without them. If you listen closelyover the course of the entire movie, you’ll actually hear 42bells ringing, meaning 42 angels got their wings.

Sisters?:White Christmas (1954)Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye play Bob and Phil, respec-

tively, in this timeless musical movie, and the “Sisters”comedy act they performed in the film was not initially inthe script. The director caught Crosby and Kaye goofingaround on the set and wrote it in because he thought itwas so funny.

I know you...: Elf (2003)Though he went uncredited, at the beginning of the

movie Peter Billingsley — a.k.a Ralphie from “A ChristmasStory” (1983) — plays Ming Ming the elf in Santa’s work-shop. Peter Dinklage also makes an appearance as MilesFinch, a bestselling children’s writer, better known as“The Angry Elf.”

Watch yourmouth!: HomeAlone (1990)

Joe Pesci had one heckuvatime trying to control histongue in this family comedy.Known for far more seriousroles like Tommy DeVito in“Goodfellas” (1990), Pesci wouldregularly, unintentionally swearwhile filming the angrier scenes. Di-rector Chris Columbus eventually suggested Pesci use theword “fridge” instead of the other F-word.

All aboard: The Polar Express (2004)Two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks voiced

six characters in the movie: Father, Hero Boy, Conductor,Scrooge, Hobo and Santa Claus. The Conductor even bearsa slight resemblance to Hanks.

Mystery flipper: The Santa Clause (1994)There are few things that beat a

good bedtime story, especially onChristmas Eve. In a scene fromthis family favorite Santa film,Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) isreading his son Charlie (EricLloyd) a Christmas story, and during the part about areindeer, the book’s left pagechanges... except the page wasnever turned! Originally the pageis a picture of a man opening a window, then it inexplicably changes to a page with writing anda different image.

OT oversight: Grumpy Old Men (1993)While this might not be the first Christmas movie you

think of this time of year, the Jack Lemmon/Walter Mat-thau flick comes to a head over the holiday season. Inone scene, Max (Matthau) and John (Lemmon) are at thebait shop discussing their Thanksgiving plans. It’s herethat they ask Chuck (Ossie Davis) if he saw the ChicagoBlackhawks hockey game, saying that it went to doubleovertime. There’s only one problem: NHL games only goto double OT if it’s a playoff game in April.

Hold your applause: Die Hard (1988)This Oscar-nominated Bruce Willis movie is a Christ-

mas classic. It’s also a classic for a couple silly slip-ups!Holly’s (Bonnie Bedelia) office holds a Christmas party, and when Takagi (James Shigeta) gives a speech, theroom breaks out in raucous applause. If you actuallywatch the employees, however, you’ll notice that no oneis really clapping.

Mi di spiace!: LoveActually (2003)After Jamie (Colin Firth) catches his girlfriend cheating

on him, he travels to his French cottage to be alone, andit’s there that he first meets Aurelia (Lúcia Moniz), whoonly speaks Portuguese. In Jamie’s awkward attempt tocommunicate with this lovely lady, he bumbles, “Moltobueno.” Eleonore (Elisabeth Margoni), who dropped offAurelia, tells him that he’s speaking Spanish, but “mol-to” is actually Italian.

Sorry,Mr. President!: Miracle on 34thStreet (1947)We all know Santa is a busy guy, but for a man who

delivers presents to every child in the world, you’d thinkhe’d know everyone’s names! Kris Kringle (EdmundGwenn) is being tested in one scene, and he’s asked toname President John Quincy Adams’ vice president.Kris says it’s Daniel D. Thompkins, but he’s wrong. JohnC. Calhoun was actually Adams’ vice president, andThompkins was President James Monroe’s vice presi-dent.

Somebody’s fabulous!:How the Grinch StoleChristmas (2000)

On one visit to Whoville, the Grinch(Jim Carrey ) begins towreak havoc on the Whosand finds himself in thepossession of clippers, so heshaves Mayor Augustus May-who’s (Jeffrey Tambor) head rightdown the middle. Whobris (Clint Howard), the mayor’sadvisor, grabs the clippers and shaves his own headdown the middle, except his hair is pulled right off hishead before he even moves his hand!

Goofy holidaymovie gaffes by Cassie Dresch

Nobody is perfect, and that is doubly true for actors, writers, directors and crew members. While we all make mistakes, few of us see them put on re-cord for the world to see for years to come. It’s with this in mind that we take a look at the goofiest gaffes from actors and filmmakers alike in theseholiday classics.
