morning why not sip some java at, whereelse, The Coffee Shop. For lunch or din-ner, drop in Dimaggio’s Pizza. Both arehighly recommended, if we do say so.Don’t miss the shopping in town. High-lights: The Berry Basket and a very spe-cial K: Karger Kollectibles. (Not tomention V: Vintage, variety and value.)The business has operated in variousother Illinois locations, as well as Indianaand Kentucky, before settling in Carmi.(Can’t get enough Hummels? Well, youmay find the one you’re missing righthere.)

In the charming burg of Waterloo,Christmas on the Square will be illumi-nated by the GLOW (Great Ladies ofWaterloo) lighted parade; chili supper tofollow the parade… which will marchnot once, but twice the weekend afterThanksgiving. Free carriage rides fromnoon to 4, both days. And, you get toenjoy holiday selections by the Waterloo

the word SALE just givesyou the willies, and we meanin a good way, what’s not to

like about a store that offers a “Spur ofthe Moment Sale”? That’s when youmay find a treasure unlike any other atSerendipity Card & Gifts in Fairfieldor in dozens of stores all decked out forthe holidays throughout ILLI-NOISouth. Since we didn’t think

you’d appreciate an 1,100 pagenewsletter ca-thunking in your mail-box this close to you-know-when, weopted to concentrate on six small-ishcommunities throughout The TourismBureau’s 19 counties, and allow you toconnect the dots. Holy Cratchit! There’s plenty more where the follow-ing came from.

When it comes to exploring smalltowns…it’s all about the find, includingthe wonderful people you’ll meet alongthe way, from shopkeepers to restau-rateurs to neighbors you just haven’tmet yet.

Serendipity had a handmadecotton wreath in store for the holi-days (we saw it over the summer),and we’re talking made from rawmaterials, with cotton bolls still at-tached to the dried vegetation.Looks just like fresh-fallen snow, natch, but the whimsical creationwill last year-round. With such

uniqueness already available inAugust, imagine what’s on handnowadays. (Maybe nothing, if y’allget there first!) Also, be sure totake in The Willow Tree andMemories Antique Gallery.

Lighting up the evenings inFairfield is the annual “Festival ofLights.” The event, which runsDecember 5 - January 1 this year, fea-tures a brilliant array of glimmeringlights and other holiday decor adorningLeo French Park. Bonfires, Christmascarolers and other festive favorites ac-company the display making for a greattime, certain to put a smile on the faceof the biggest Grinch.

For eats, try Flat Iron Cooking Co.But save room for dessert. Because, nottoo far is Amy’s Sweet Gallery, whereyou’ll find cookies and other treats thatare ‘slap-your-grandma’ good! (Which isnot as bad as being run over by a rein-deer, but hey.)

Perhaps the most famous sweeteryanywhere in our special region is inNewton: Arndt’s Fudgery, which shipsits delectables far and wide. There areliterally dozens of flavors. Peppermintfudge at Christmas? We’re in.

Newton is also famed for favoriteson Burl Ives, folksinger who sang theclassic Holly Jolly Christmas and alsovoiced Sam the Snowman in the ani-mated Rudolph the Red-Nosed ReindeerTV feature from the 1960s. Sam, Her-mey the Elf, the Abominable Snowman

and other characters from the car-

toon have appeared in theholiday parade, in costumeslovingly recreated by anarea seamstress. Replicasof the characters, fash-ioned after the Ives’ ac-tual lawn ornaments, have fascinated those who sawthe movie last year… or 50 years ago.Plus, there are puppet shows, carolersin period dress entertain, and carriagerides clop-clop through Newton dur-ing the town’s holiday celebration, thefirst three Fridays in December.

Of course, make a day of it.Browse the fine sterling jewelry andunique ethnic pieces from Kenya fea-tured at Five Sisters Jewelry & Gifts.Have a cuppa joe at Solid Grounds, orenjoy a full Eye-talian meal—why; atJoe’s of course.

Santa Claus manages somehow toarrive everywhere at once in Fairfield,Newton and our other select four com-munities to wow kids of all ages. In Fair-field, the Kiwanis put it on. Here andmost everywhere you go, they’re all litup... the parades, that is. In Carmi, it’s aWhite (County) Christmas lighted pa-rade. A scaled-down version of The Polar

Express (powered not by steam, buta repurposed lawnmower engine) hasbeen featured, but real star TomHanks has not. (Well, he was an ani-mated conductor in the movie.) In the

Municipal Band. (Chili notyour favorite for a special daytrip? Try Gallagher’s or JFires’Market Bistro.) Shop at MillStreet Treasures downtown,or at Nice Twice, a con-verted train depot downthe hill. If that whets yourappetite for history, theHistory Museum ofMonroe County is here, too.

Or, take a jaunt to Columbia forthe parade on Dec. 5. (With a name likeBright Night Christmas, do you thinkthis one might be lighted, as well?) Andif you’d like to get all lit up yourself—well, don’t. But, after a rigorous shoppingday at Elements Off Main (local artists, photographers and gifts galore) or Mag-nolia, enjoy a meal and mellow out withsome fruit of the vine near Elements atReifschneider’s Grill & Grape, whichdiners have reviewed favorably for itsbeer and wine lists. And yes, you couldprobably make one of your day trips thisholiday season to take in both Columbiaand Waterloo, which are just a little morethan eight miles apart on Illinois 3, a sec-tion of the Great River Road, with thelovely, quaint town centers just up thebluff a bit.

How about another lighted Christ-mas parade? Well, you can try the one inO’Fallon, the mini-metropolis closest toSt. Louis—that is, of the six we’ve high-lighted for day trippers. (It’s on Saturday,Nov. 28.) Maybe have some lunch atPeel Wood Fired Pizza in between shop-ping at places like Fezziwig’s Marketplaceand Luckenbooth ConsignmentGallery… the latter of which is a reallyfun visit if you’ve got something to sell, too. (Well, consign.) Peel’s is the secondlocation of a business whose flagship isin Edwardsville. And, we’re aware thatpizza has a crust, not a peel; the latter isthe moniker of one of America’s tradi-tional 19th century beer styles.Peel’s cream ale is pale gold with “a fruityfloral hop aroma and a sweet malty fla-vor.” Or, so they say. Sounds a-peeling, inany case.

Fezziwig’s is a purveyor of oolongand pu-erh… both tea varieties, for theuninitiated… as well as black, white, green, and chai. With more than 115 va-rieties, this is the other way to over-caf-feinate yourself. (Speaking of Fezziwig, are you having a Dickens of a time tryingto place that name? Why, Mr. Fezziwigwas the fine, upstanding businessman thatEbenezer Scrooge apprenticed under asa young man in A Christmas Carol, beforehis ethics went completely to pot and hebecame, well, Scrooge.) As well as dozensof teas that aren’t Lipton, this emporiumoffers fine gourmet foods that you won’tfind in many area supermarkets.

Notice we haven’t mentioned “TheMall.” That is, not yet. St. Clair Square isin Fairview Heights, just an exit west ofO’Fallon on Interstate 64.And the area’s largest an-tique mall is just across thehighway.

Haven’t dropped yet?Well, then, keep shopping!

Excitement in Belleville’s West End

We say “prost” to the city of Bellevillefor a new German Brew Pub and host ofother new attractions coming to town! A groundbreaking ceremony tookplace in July for an exciting new develop-ment on IL 15 across from the NationalShrine of Our Lady of the Snows. The planincludes a Hofbrauhaus Brewpub - athemed restaurant from Munich, Germanybased brewery that’s been serving up sudsfor over 400 years. Along with the brewpubwill be an upscale 130-room hotel, a 30,000ft. convention center, additional restaurantsand a gas station/convenience store. Mayor Mark Eckert told the BellevilleNews Democrat that the center could produce$500,000 in annual sales taxrevenue for the city, accord-ing to what he calls a “con-servative” estimate. We look forward tothe excitement this willbring to the Shrine andBelleville’s West-end com-munity, which includesseveral shops, restaurants, abrewery and more.

This New Exhibit Shows AncientLife in the Mississippi River Valley andwas painstakingly preserved at Cahokia

Mounds State Historic Site.It is the centerpiece of a newpermanent exhibit: “Wetlandsand Waterways: the Key toCahokia,” focuses on lifealong the rivers and wetlandsof the Mississippi Valley thatgave rise to Cahokia Mounds,

America’s first city. The exhibit includes a 52 ft. longmural depicting a backwater lake, riverbluffs, forests and fields typical of thefloodplain, known locally as the Amer-ican Bottom. In front of the meticulously de-tailed mural, stands a life-size dioramawith a woman harvesting squasheswhile other native crops grow nearby. She gazes across a lake rich with fish, turtles, ducks and more, to watch as aman and a boy load their canoe. Theyare taking rabbits, fish, mussels, basketsof nuts and wild plants to trade at anearby village along the lake. The exhibit panels provide detailsabout the scene. Exhibit cases sur-rounding the new diorama describeNative American agriculture, huntingand gathering and cosmological beliefsrelated to this environment. The aforementioned dugoutcanoe was constructed from bald cy-press wood between 600-700 yearsago. Tool marks and charring from theprocess can still be seen on its surfaces. It was found in Arkansas on a sandbarin the St. Francis River after a flood in2008. The Illinois State ArchaeologicalSociety bought the canoe and donatedit to Cahokia Mounds. The process topreserve the canoe took over fiveyears. It was submerged in a chemicalsolution for three years and then re-quired another two years to allow thevessel to dry out! All in all, it took 19 key individu-als and ten different organizationsranging from museum societies to avideo production studio to create thisintriguing exhibit. It was well worththe effort! Cahokia Mounds State HistoricSite is located just a couple miles southof I-255 on Collinsville Rd. inCollinsville. The Interpretive Center isopen Wed. – Sun. year-round, and youcan visit the outdoor mound sites in-cluding Monks Mound any time.
