WHILe SHePHeRdS WATCHed (1703) (This Christmas carol, dating back to 1703, comes from a poem written by Nahum Tate, the poet laureate in the reign of Queen Anne, and Nicholas Brady. It features para-phrased psalms from the bible.)

While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground,The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around, And glory shone around.

“Fear not!” said he, for mighty dreadHad seized their troubled mind.“Glad tidings of great joy I bringTo you and all mankindTo you and all mankind.

“To you, in David’s town, this dayIs born of David’s lineA Savior, who is Christ the Lord,And this shall be the sign, And this shall be the sign.

“The heavenly Babe you there shall find To human view displayed,All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,And in a manger laid, And in a manger laid.” Thus spake the seraph and forth-with Appeared a shining throngOf angels praising God on high, Who thus addressed their song,Who thus addressed their song:

“All glory be to God on high, And to the Earth be peace;Good will henceforth from Heaven to men Begin and never cease, Begin and never cease!”

WHAT CHILd IS THIS? (A popular Christmas carol written in 1865, it was written by William Chatterton Dix who wrote hymns while he was ill and confined to bed for several months.)

What Child is this who, laid to restOn Mary’s lap is sleeping?Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King,Whom shepherds guard and angels sing;Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Why lies He in such mean estate,Where ox and ass are feeding?Good Christians, fear, for sinners here The silent Word is pleading.Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, The cross be borne for me, for you.Hail, hail the Word made flesh,The Babe, the Son of Mary.

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,Come peasant, king to own Him;

The King of kings salvation brings,Let loving hearts enthrone Him.Raise, raise a song on high, The virgin sings her lullaby.Joy, joy for Christ is born,The Babe, the Son of Mary.

We THRee KIngS of oRIenT ARe (John Henry Hopkins, 1857) (John H. Hopkins Jr. wrote this famous American carol in 1857 for a Christmas pageant at a seminary in New York City.)

We three kings of Orient are;Bearing gifts we traverse afar,Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star.

Refrain: O star of wonder, star of light,Star with royal beauty bright,Westward leading, still proceeding,Guide us to thy perfect light.

Born a King on Bethlehem’s plainGold I bring to crown Him again,King forever, ceasing never,Over us all to reign.

Refrain

Frankincense to offer have I;Incense owns a Deity nigh;Prayer and praising, voices raising, Worshipping God on high.

Refrain

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfumeBreathes a life of gathering gloom;Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,Sealed in the stone cold tomb.

Refrain

Glorious now behold Him arise;King and God and sacrifice;Alleluia, Alleluia,Sounds through the earth and skies.

WATCHMAn, TeLL US of THe nIgHT(written by Sir John Bowring in 1825) (The hymn likely most famil-iar to Americans, was written by John Bowring.) Watchman, tell us of the night,

What its signs of promise are.Traveler, o’er yon mountain’s height, See that glory beaming star.Watchman, does its beauteous rayAught of joy or hope foretell?Traveler, yes—it brings the day, Promised day of Israel.

Watchman, tell us of the night;Higher yet that star ascends. Traveler, blessedness and light,Peace and truth its course portends. Watchman, will its beams aloneGild the spot that gave them birth?Traveler, ages are its own; See, it bursts o’er all the earth.

Watchman, tell us of the night,

For the morning seems to dawn.Traveler, darkness takes its flight,Doubt and terror are withdrawn.Watchman, let thy wanderings cease;Hie thee to thy quiet home.Traveler, lo! the Prince of Peace, Lo! the Son of God is come!

UP on THe HoUSeToP (written by B. R. Hanby, approxi-mately 1860) (This song, written in the United States, is one of the first songs to talk about Santa Claus extensively. It is also one of the first secular Christmas songs.)

Up on the housetop reindeer pause,Out jumps good old Santa Claus.Down thru' the chimney with lots of toys,All for the little girls and boys.

Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn't go!Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn't go!Up on the housetop, click, click, click,Down thru' the chimney with good Saint Nick.

Up on the housetop reindeer pause,Out jumps good old Santa Claus.

Down thru' the chimney with lots of toys,All for the little girls and boys.

Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn't go!Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn't go!Up on the housetop, click, click, click,Down thru' the chimney with good Saint Nick.

THe fIRST noeL(first published 1833) (Though this carol's origins are unknown, it's generally thought to date back to the 16th century. It was first pub-lished in 1833 in Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern.)

The First Noel, the Angels did sayWas to certain poor shepherds in fields as they layIn fields where they lay keeping their sheepOn a cold winter's night that was so deep.Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

They looked up and saw a starShining in the East beyond them farAnd to the earth it gave great light

And so it continued both day and night.Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

And by the light of that same star Three Wise men came from country far To seek for a King was their intentAnd to follow the star wherever it went.Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

This star drew nigh to the north-westO'er Bethlehem it took its restAnd there it did both Pause and stayRight o'er the place where Jesus lay.Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

Then entered in those Wise men threeFull reverently upon their kneeAnd offered there in His presenceTheir gold and myrrh and frankin-cense. Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accord

Sing praises to our heavenly LordThat hath made Heaven and earth of noughtAnd with his blood mankind has bought.Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

o LITTLe ToWn of BeTHLeHeM (written by Bishop Phillips Brooks in 1868) (Phillips Brooks wrote this carol inspired by his horseback journey from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, where he assisted with the midnight service on Christmas Eve 1865.)

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by.Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above,While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love.

O morning stars together, proclaim the holy birth,And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth!

How silently, how silently, the wondrous Gift is giv’n;So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His Heav’n.No ear may hear His coming, but in this world of sin,Where meek souls will receive Him still, the dear Christ enters in.

Where children pure and happy pray to the blessèd Child,Where misery cries out to Thee, Son of the mother mild;Where charity stands watching and faith holds wide the door,The dark night wakes, the glory breaks, and Christmas comes once more.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray;Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

o HoLY nIgHT (This well-known Christmas carol was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to a French poem at the request of a parish priest. It recalls the birth of Jesus.)

O Holy Night! The stars are bright-ly shining,It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.Long lay the world in sin and error pining.Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,For yonder breaks a new and glori-ous morn.Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!O night divine, the night when Christ was born;O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.

O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land. The King of kings lay thus lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friends. He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!Behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Truly He taught us to love one another,His law is love and His gospel is peace.Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother. And in his name all oppression shall cease.Sweet hymns of joy in grateful cho-rus raise we,With all our hearts we praise His holy name.Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,His power and glory ever more proclaim! His power and glory ever more proclaim!

JoY To THe WoRLd (lyrics by Isaac Watts, music by George Handel in 1719) (The words of this Christmas carol were written in 1719 by Isaac Watts. It was origi-nally named Antioch after the city of Antioch, Syria where believers were first called "Christians".)

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!Let earth receive her King;Let every heart prepare Him room,And Heaven and nature sing,And Heaven and nature sing,And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns!Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found,Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness,And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love,And wonders, wonders, of His love.

good KIng WenCeSLAS (published by John Mason Neal in 1853) (A popular Christmas carol about a king who gives alms to a poor peasant on the second day of Christmas based on the historical Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia.)

Good King Wenceslas looked out, on the Feast of Stephen, When the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even; Brightly shone the moon that night, tho' the frost was cruel, When a poor man came in sight, gath'ring winter fuel.

"Hither, page, and stand by me, if thou know'st it, telling, Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?" "Sire, he lives a good league hence, underneath the mountain;

"Bring me flesh, and bring me wine, bring me pine logs hither: Thou and I will see him dine, when we bear them thither." Page and monarch, forth they went, forth they went together; Through the rude wind's wild lament and the bitter weather.

"Sire, the night is darker now, and the wind blow stronger; Fails my heart, I know not how; I can go no longer." "Mark my footsteps, my good page. Tread thou in them boldly Thou shalt find the winter's rage freeze thy blood less coldly."

In his master's steps he trod, where the snow lay dinted; Heat was in the very sod which the saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure, wealth or rank possessing, Ye who now will bless the poor, shall yourselves find blessing.
