20ROAD TIPS

INSIDE!

Page 2: holiday road tripsimages.meredith.com/parents/pdf/AAA_booklet_ONLINE.pdf · and AAA want your winter road trip to be safe and enjoyable. ... winter driving tips Before your road trip,

• Use your safety belt every time you get into your vehicle.

• Reduce your speed. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Give yourself time to maneuver.

• Do one thing at a time. To prevent loss of traction, brake, then turn, then accelerate, carefully and slowly.

• Start slowing down earlier. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads.

• Maintain more space around your vehicle. The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds to give more time to stop.

• Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.

• Remove heavy coats before buckling up.

WINTER ROAD TRIPS ARE SUPER-FUN, but they can get tricky—even scary—when you encounter severe weather. Be sure you know these safety rules for dealing with winter road emergencies before you set out.

Print out a packing list for each child. After bags are packed, stow the lists in their suitcases, and each child can use it to pack everything up for the trip back home.

Don’t leave home without a stash of resealable 10-gallon plastic bags. You can use them to separate outfits for each day, store wet swim gear and dirty laundry, and corral trash in the car.

Simplify hotel stops by putting everyone’s overnight gear in one bag. For travel days that run late, assemble a sleepy-time bag with jammies, a toothbrush, blanket, and stuffed animal for each child.

Bring along a three-ring binder filled with clear plastic sleeves containing blank sheets of paper and simple games, such as hangman and tic-tac-toe. Using dry-erase markers, kids can doodle and play, then wipe the sleeves clean and play again.

For longer drives, bring surprise goody bags to hand out at noteworthy intervals (like passing a state border). Label each bag with the name of the milestone and inside have a snack, a coloring page, and a special privilege coupon (e.g., you get to pick the music we listen to for the next 15 minutes).

Place a collapsible cooler in the car to fill with snacks and lunches, plus a no-leak water bottle for each traveler.

GROWN-UP EMERGENCY CAR CARE KIT

For burning off energy at rest stops along the way, pack along a jump rope, a soccer ball, or a flying disk.

A fun way to commemorate all the trips your family takes is to mark them over time on a wall map. The one shown here is made by tracing U.S. map puzzle pieces on chalkboard fabric and coloring in each state you visit with chalkboard paint.

games5License Plate Lingo. See who can be the first player to make a sentence out of the letters on a license plate ahead of you. For example, if the plate is LH5-2VF, you might shout, “Let’s have vacation fun!” The weirder the sentence, the better.

Hink Pink. In this fun word game, someone thinks of two one-syllable words that rhyme (for example, “fat cat”), and gives everyone else a clue (for example, “large feline”). The person who guesses the answer gets to come up with the next Hink Pink. As players get warmed up, you can try Hinky Pinkys (two two-syllable words, such as “lotion potion”) or Hinkety Pinketys (two three-syllable words, such as “gorilla flotilla”).

Don’t Say 20. Two people take turns counting to 20. On each turn, a player can say one or two numbers aloud. (If the first person says “One,” the second person might say “Two, three.”) The goal is to force your opponent to say 20 first. Fun variations: count to 30, include more players, or allow saying just one, or two, or three numbers aloud.

Car Counting. Before you go, print up simple sheets listing types of vehicles and the number of points for sighting each one. Common vehicles, such as a minivan, are worth one point; a cement mixer or another unusual kind would be worth five. Each family member tracks the cars he sees, and the person with the highest score wins. For a more collaborative version, see how many points the family can get by working together.

Geography-Go-Round. Start with any place in the world—Kansas, for example. The next person has to think of a place that begins with the last letter of “Kansas,” such as “South Africa.” Whoever goes next needs a place that starts with an “A”. You can use a place only once per game, and it has to be a real place.
