2015 Holiday Programs on 88.9WCVE Richmond Public Radio Throughout December local hosts Mike Goldberg, George Maida, and Shawn Evans offer old and new seasonal music in addition to the programming listed below. Classical programming airs Monday-Friday 11 am to 3 pm and 10 pm, Saturday and Sunday mornings at 7 am and Sunday evenings 8 pm. November 29 10 pm With Heart and Voice The themes of anticipation of the Messiah permeate the time of preparation known as Advent. Choral and organ music of longing and expectation will be featured for the Advent journey. December 6 8 pm A Chanukah Celebration with Chicago A Cappella Join Jonathan Miller, artistic director of Chicago A Cappella and a longtime champion of Jewish choral music, for an inspiring and informative show featuring choral music set to Chanukah texts. 10 pm With Heart and Voice John the Baptist’s cry in the wilderness, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord,” rings out with music of preparation and anticipation during Advent. December 7 7 pm Itzhak Perlman’s Chanukah Radio Party Join the superstar violinist as he tells the story of the Jewish festival of lights and shares his favorite holiday recordings. December 13 10 pm With Heart and Voice Peter DuBois shares more great choral and organ music in anticipation of Christmas. December 18 10 pm Handel’s Messiah with Host George Maida Later editions, like the 1754 publication of Messiah contain changes for ease of performance. More rare is this version, the 1743 setting, which debuted in London, revealing a broader context of Handel’s earlier vision. December 19 10 pm The Christmas Croude This December marks the 30th annual presentation of The Christmas Croude. This hour features unusual gems from around the world–festive music never aired in commercial radio broadcasts. December 21 10 pm A Paul Winter Solstice Concert Hear the Paul Winter Consort from New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine. December 22 10 pm A Chanticleer Christmas A program of holiday favorites, new and old, presented live in concert by the superb 12-man ensemble known as “an orchestra of voices.” 11 pm Slavic Wonders: Christmas with The Rose Ensemble This stunning seasonal event features some truly brilliant gems from the libraries and monasteries of Krakow, Prague, and Moscow. Hear everything from soaring soprano lines to the signature Slavic sound of rumbling basses in a mixture of chant, carols and glorious polyphony.
