There is always room for growth when it comes to display and it is hoped that will be part of our focus during the coming year. We saw a lot of improvement in the suiban displays this year in particular which require quite a bit of thought and can be challenging. One thing needs to be acknowledged and cannot be overstated and that is the ability of our amazing members to shine when the need arises. Everyone really upped their game during the exhibition. From set-up day to your participation as security and docent during the week and finally to the hectic business of taking down and packing up the show. Set-up was smooth and take down was seamless. Although I was unable to participate, I watched and you were all wonderful and we so appreciate that! Some folks were a stand out: Marty Hagbery, Marge Blasingame, Jack Levy, Aaron Finkbiner, Fred Morris, Debra and David Melitz, Don Kruger, come to mind. Janet Shimizu and Jack Levy kept the supplies coming, Linda Gill kept us in line, Uyen Truong provided the labels and Jack Levy, David Melitz, Phil Hogan and Al Nelson offered daiza demonstrations. We had so many helpers I cannot list them for fear of omitting a name but you know who you are! Thank you all. We would like to welcome our 14 newest members: Rosalie Elder, Gary Fisher, Ninh Huu Hiep, Bruce and Paula Jones, Fran and Sabreen Lyman, Laurie Olson, Ivonne Quintanilla, William and Kellie Sepulveda, Amy Tung and Michael Liu, and Kate Zankowicz. Don Kruger’s Yuha Adventure It is possible that Don found more than his share of excellent stones! Of course, most others did as well which always makes for a wonderful tanseki. Don was able to display his recent finds at The Huntington Exhibition after less than 2 months. No aging of these stones was necessary! Don and all of us were fortunate to have a perfect location scout in Jack Levy (and Don knows a thing or two about that). Thanks to Marty Hagbery, we were all safe, a serious priority. Here are a couple of Don’s stones in the field.

Here are Don’s most excellent displays of his newest stones. One began as a landscape until Don turned it over and saw something else. Now it presents as an animal figure.

Bonsai-A-Thon XXIII

Saturday & Sunday, February 23rd & 24th, 2019

ABOUT THE BONSAI-A-THON:

The Bonsai-A-Thon is the annual fund raising event for the GSBF Collection at The Huntington. The Bonsai-A-Thon is held on the last weekend in the month of February. The event has been expanding since inception. Each year you can expect 20 plus vendors selling pots, finished bonsai, raw bonsai stock, tools, akadama, scoria, accessories, and suiseki (viewing stones). Each day you can expect four to five demonstrators working in an inviting setting allowing you to ask questions and to get to know each expert. They are picked not only from Southern California, but from the state at large and when available nationally known demonstrators will participate as well. The trees from these demonstrations are auctioned at the end of the day. Along with the auction a large benefit drawing is held daily.

Aiseki Kai Members, The Huntington has been very good to us so let’s return the favor and support them, too.

The Huntington Library is providing its first major loan exhibition drawn from the American Viewing Stone Resource Center collections. Selected to serve as an introduction to stone appreciation, the exhibit consists of a visual mix of about 70 stones: 40 % Japanese suiseki and 60% American Viewing Stones. The stones will be shown along with a selection of black and white photographs of Hokkaido landscapes by Seattle photographer Michael Kenna, as Portland Japanese Garden celebrates 2019 as The Year of Hokkaido.

The Exhibit opens to the public on Saturday, February 9th. The greater part of the exhibit runs until March 24th; there will be a small extended display in the Tanabe Gallery through April 7th.

Jim Greaves, The Huntington curator of viewing stones, is due to give a short lecture, date TBA.
