Entering your Quilt in a Judged and Juried Quilt show

By Maria Cousins

There are many talented quilters in this guild that might want to enter their quilts into some regional and national shows that award prizes as well as ribbons. A juried show selectively determines which quilts will be accepted based on Design, Technique, Workmanship and Presentation. In a judged show accepted quilts compete and prizes (cash and or merchandise) are awarded.

Tips to Entering:

Know the show you are entering - Many national juried shows get hundreds of applications and only accept a fraction of them.

Read and re-read the application - There are specific rules for each show and every show is different. Make sure you know them and follow them.

Send in your application on time. You will be rejected if you don't send it by the date specified. Some applications need to be received by the due date and some just need to be postmarked by the due date.

You will be asked to choose a category that your quilt should be entered into i.e, "small wall quilt" or "large bed quilt". Choose wisely. Some shows will change the category for you if they think your quilt will do better in a different one, some will not. You don't want your art quilt to be judged in the traditional category.

Take good pictures! The application will tell you what quilt views they want to see.

Fill out the application completely and make sure to give credit when due. If the quilt you made is a copy of a pattern from a book, you'll need to credit the designer. If your quilt was professionally quilted, you will need to credit the quilter.

If your quilt gets accepted, make sure to follow all of the procedures you get with your acceptance letter or acceptance email. If you don't, you could get disqualified.

The process for entering a quilt has gone digital although mail-in applications are still being accepted in most shows.

Important information: Be sure to observe all deadlines. Early entries are permissible and encouraged. Quilts submitted after the deadlines are dismissed, regardless of how beautiful they are. Be sure to follow any instructions about submission for a particular category or group. Read the rules and regulations carefully and follow them. There is usually a fee when entering a quilt.

Follow the rules for the type of photographs required. MOST quilt shows will not accept photographs that have been edited in any manner. Following the directions be prepared to submit a head on shot of

4.

yourself, a picture of the entire quilt, details of the quilting and close ups of the important details of the quilt. Most photographs are to be submitted in digital format ( CD) but some places still require slides. You must submit the photographs in the format they request.

The rules for the quilt show are set by the hosting organization and will change from show to show. The national shows usually have certified judges, judges who will judge the quilt based on predetermined standards. Judges can be trained and certified by the National Quilting Association, or they can be trained through experience. They all adhere to similar standards of judging, although final results will be varied based on the individuals.

There are several method of tallying the points for judging the quilt and the hosting organization will determine what criteria is used. It is usually spelled out in the quilt entry form. Quilts are judged individually then against other quilts in their category and classifications. Best of show quilts are the most perfect quilts with the best workmanship and design elements in the show .

What is important to remember is that having your quilts judged is to improve your techniques for the next quilt, to learn from the judge’s comments. Do not take

comments personally but use them as a springboard for improving your workmanship.

I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to the ladies who donated the beautiful quilts at our last

meeting.

Everyone of these amazing quilts will be put in the hands of a grateful person.

Quilting for charity is a wonderful way to give back to our Community.

If anyone knows of any organizations that would appreciate our quilts or any other handmade item, please

let me know.

SHAF, Safe Home for Abused Families, needs the following quilts:

2 female infants, 1 female toddler, 1 female 4 years old, 1 female 7years old, 2 males 10 and 12 years ol

Please help to put a smile on these children's faces. Every quilt that is made helps change someones life.

Your quilts make a difference.

When donating items please attach your name on each of the items.

If anyone would like to get together for a day of making charity quilts, please contact Judy Wollman at

[email protected].

Bethany House needs the following quilts:

4 Crib size quilts: 2 boys’ and 2 girls’

4 Youth size quilts (54’ x 78’) 2 boys’ and 2 girls’

Your donations are always greatly appreciated.

Cora Pandy gave me a great idea about making Fidgets. They help provide motor and sentry

stimulation, and also help with anxiety and depression for people with Dementia or Alzheimers. We have

included the pattern after the Blocks of the Month for computer users. Hard copy members can pick up a

copy at the January meeting

One idea for a fidget is a half apron that they can tie around their waist so it doesn’t fall off.

If you want to make a full apron, remember sometimes the neck straps become loose or irritates their

necks. One way is securing the strap with Velcro. You can use zippers, bells, ties, a pocket, buttons,

beads, etc. You can go on the internet to get lots of ideas. REMEMBER, when making an apron, the wearers are looking

down at the apron.

I have 17 baby quilt tops that need to be finished. They need

batting, backing and binding. If you

would like to volunteer to finish one of these charity quilts

please e-mail at: [email protected]

Charity, continued If you are receiving this Newsletter on your computer, the Charity apron is attached. If you receive a hard copy, it didn’t fit so you may pick up a copy at the January meeting. The letters of thanks that the guild has received from organizations that have received our quilts will be on display at the January meeting. Please look for them. The Member Workshop Committee is planning for 2017. We are planning to have a Station Rotation consisting of mini-workshops taught by members who have something they are willing to share with others at the August meeting.

Maybe you are rushing to complete a nice holiday gift for someone right now. Perhaps that very gift could be easily explained to others. Do not hide the pattern or your holiday craft ideas. Share them with others in August. All you need to do is say, “Pat I have something to share for the station rotation!” I welcome all!

Quilt the Day Away is again being planned for the fall. It can only happen if six or seven members offer to teach eager and friendly quilters. Everyone enjoys the day. Here is your chance to have a special part of that day. Just VOLUNTEER!

Every year people ask, “Why don’t we do this kind of program more often?” The major reason is because you have not volunteered!

Here is your chance. Be brave. Share your love of quilting with other guild members.

Contact: Pat Roaldsen at [email protected] or 516 783 1295.

Quilts of Valor Do you have a veteran or service person in your family??? Are they a neighbor of yours? Is it a friend? Did they grow up with your children? Now is the time that you can honor these wonderful people. If you would like to make a quilt of valor for someone in your life, now's the time! On March 25 we are going to get together and spend the day on QOV. I will bring the leftover 2 1/2” strips from the last time as well as other fabric I have accumulated. I would like to demonstrate 2 fairly easy quilt patterns that is good for all levels. I will quilt all of the quilts and provide the batting all you have to do is make the top and provide a backing that is at least 3” larger (all sides) than the quilt top. I think a May 1st deadline for quilting sounds good. I would then get it back to you for the HAND sewing of the binding. Also a volunteer would be needed to make the labels. There is a suggestion to make a presentation to the recipients or a family member at either a meeting or at a special presentation ceremony. You don’t need to attend on March 25 to be involved with this project. You could start now if you like. (Quilt of Valor 60” by 80” min.) I will be at the next meeting to answer any questions that you may have. Yours in quilting,
