Healthcare Fraud Threatens Texans By Chuck Blesener

Medicaid fraud alone costs taxpayers $27 billion in Texas It is second only to terrorism in the amount of money involved Medicaid fraud is investigated by the Texas Attorney Generalrsquos office (800-436-6184 wwwoagstatetxus) while Medicare fraud is investigated by the FBI One phone call can open a case for investigation If the fraud is against a private insurance carrier they will refer you to the National Insurance Fraud Hotline Everyone is targeted and nursing homes and home healthcare companies can be investigated if they receive Medicaid or Medicare payments even if the victim is not on either

Many of the criminals involved are immigrants from Nigeria Armenia and Cuba and schools have been set up in England and Spain to teach them how to defraud us Fraud includes billing for services not rendered billing for unnecessary services billing by

unqualified professionals billing for services provided by others kickbacks padding cost reports employees enrolling as fictitious providers and filing false claims

In Texas there are 32 million eligible Medicaid recipients (defined as at 30 above the poverty level and below) The fraud involves abuse and neglect of seniors by individuals corporations and financial institutions Those over 55 are the number one target of identity thieves Many nursing homes are investigated for drug diversion where patients are billed for expensive drugs but receiving aspirin It is important for family members to monitor the care and finances for senior loved ones and report any problems to the proper authorities
