07 PHYSICS Holiday Homework Class XII

Chapters: Ray Optics and Optical Instruments Wave Optics

Q1.Determine if the densities of different materials change the speed of light. Also determine if changing the incidence angles or the temperatures of the materials, would change the velocity of the light through the material. Use transparent materials like oil, sugar and salt solutions of different concentration and temperature by projecting a laser beam through these solutions kept in glass containers at various angles (take photographs ) and calculate the index of refraction of each material at a 300, 450 and 600 degree angle. The photograph will help to measure the incidence and refracted angle. Use Snell’s Law. Repeat this procedure for each material at two different temperatures (use clinical thermometer available at home).Draw graphs showing the variation of Density w.r.t Refractive Index and variation of Temperature with respect to Refractive Index for each test. Or Make your own double slit experiment and diffraction experiment at home using a laser pointer and house hold materials. Write down the steps along with the photographs. Repeat these experiments for slits of different widths and record your observations. What do you conclude from the following experiment ?

  • Q2. Answer the following: (i) Identify the two bows. (ii)How are they formed? (iii) Why and how are they different?

Q3. Answer the following: (i) Identify the clinical procedure and the diagnostic tool used. (ii)What is the principle used?

Q4.Answer the following: (i) Why are stars made up of different colours? (ii)Which instrument is used to look at celestial objects? How is it different from a microscope? What modification should be done to see distant objects on earth?

  • Q5. (i)Identify the optical phenomenon. (ii)Where does it take place? (iii)How is it different from mirage?
