Hand-made for the holidaysBY GAYNOR BIGELBACH

If shopping for Holiday gifts sees you engaged in a desperate, and fruitless, search for that unique item that speaks to both the giver and the receiver, take heart, because there is an

alternative. After years as the province of pot-holder-

crafting seniors, a new generation of entrepreneurs has made “hand-made” hip again.

At Tatnuck Bead Co., (1099 Pleasant St., Worcester, 508-754-0999, tatnuckbead.com) even a newbie can drop in, shop for beads and fixings, then sit down at one of their tables to create a simple necklace or wire-wrapped earrings on site. A creative staff is on hand to offer advice, or help you score a professional-looking finish to your project. Children are wel-come to work on their own projects, such as the memory-wire bracelets which the Tatnuck staff rec-ommends as an introduction to beading. With thousands of beads to choose from, you can make each piece unique, whatever your budget.

Vaishali Patel of PYOP Studio Craft Center

(290 W Main St., Northboro, 508-393-3100, pyopstudio.com) has a friendly warning for her new customers, “Be prepared to come back next week because this is an addiction!” The studio has doz-ens of functional items like bowls, plates and vases to decorate as well as photo frames, necklaces and earrings. One wall, dubbed “Ask Us How,” showcas-es different painting and glazing techniques so that

a beginner can get a feel for the

art. “We have a lot of creative tools for people to look at,” said Patel. “Sometimes, when a customer is flipping through our clip art they will see an image that brings back memories of someone and then they can use that image to create something special

for them. We feel that when you make something that people can use everyday, you are creating something that will make that person think of you everyday. You are actually making memories.”

If you’re hoping to create some sweet memories, then you’ll find all you need at Wicked Good Cookies (61 Shrewsbury St., Boylston, 508-869-6577, wickedgoodcookies.com). This locally

owned bakery has developed a

technique to print any photo, artwork, or text

onto the frosting of their homemade sugar cookies. You

can visit the store with the digital or hard copy image you’d wish to rep-

licate into confection perfection, or you can e-mail it in directly. Says Mark Shooshan,

“We talk with our customers, and we create a digital image of what the cookie will look like when it’s printed. We work on the artwork together to make sure that they get exactly what they want. Our catchphrase is, ‘We taste as good as we look!’”

There are hundreds of shapes and sizes to choose from, but Shooshan says two of their most popular digitalized holiday cookies are the snow-man and mitten cookies. The usual turnaround is three days, says Shooshan, but the holidays can get very busy, so plan ahead. It could just be the sweet-

ener your mother-in-law needs. Laurel Wilber and her team at The Fabric

Stash, (45a Sturbridge Road, Charlton, 508-248-

0600, fabricstashinc.com) have put together a hand-made Holiday series of classes called “Make It, Take It” with a large selection of projects from tote bags

and pillows, to aprons and table runners. You can enter crafting nirvana by browsing for your fabrics and embellishments like beads or buttons, or pur-chase one of their ready to roll kits. Wilber and her staff will provide on the spot instruction so that you can complete your project and take it home with you the same day. Call ahead to reserve your space.

When too little time unravels your plans of whipping up hand-knit gifts, Christina Lentz-Larsen at The Sheep Shack (787 Main St, Holden, 508-829-5811, thesheepshack.com) has some advice to get you back on track. “The big handmade gift this year is the cowl – it’s a very hot accessory in the fashion world — the next big thing!” she says. “You can choose a beautiful pattern for the cowl and try out different stitch work. It’s manageable and you don’t have to worry about investing in an enormous project at the holidays.” For the teenage girl in your life, Lentz-Larsen rec-ommends “Bella’s Mittens.” Based on a pair of too-hip mitts worn in the movie “Twilight,” they may bring a smile to even the most world weary of faces. Now, that’s something worth celebrating.

When you need a gift that is as individual as the person you’re gifting to, nothing says you’re one-of-a-kind better than a handmade item. Take these ideas and run with them —in your own, unique way. ❊

The holidays are stressful, there’s no getting around that. Everyone is also looking to save money. So, it’s not a surprise

that current trends show more people — from corporations to individuals — are using catering companies to provide them with an excellent experience within their budget.

Rather than taking employees to res-taurants or throwing big off-site parties, many corporations are catering meetings and parties right at the business. Justin Szostakowski, proprietor of Isador’s Fruit & Deli in Charlton says that many of his clients prefer catering or on-site food because “they don’t want to force their associates to drive more. They care about their employees.”

Even people throwing parties at home are realizing that catering is not only a via-

ble option, but a preferable one. Catering means that there aren’t any extra shopping trips, no cleaning up afterwards, no dishes, and no slaving in the kitchen tak-ing time away from party guests. “It’s the best Christmas present you can get yourself,” says Barbara Cotter, owner of Worcester-based Struck Catering. “Get the stress off your shoulders, and put it on ours.”

What makes catering such an excellent option is ver-satility. Catering companies work within your budget, and they know their business. If you have a limited amount of money, your caterer knows what selections will impress your guests for your price. Also, not only can most catering companies prepare a wide variety of foods, but you can find a company that specializes in particular cuisine. For example, Nancy Chang offers healthy Chinese and Asian foods while El Basha spe-cializes in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine (including their famous “Finger Baklava,” which they only serve at catered events). On the other hand, both Nancy Chang and El Basha offer selections beyond their specialties so clients can ensure all guests will have food they enjoy.

Clients also have choices in how involved they want the caterers to be. El Basha’s Jean Sakhat notes that Christmas Eve is one of their busiest days of the year because they have so many pick-up orders: People order platters to put out. On the other end of the spectrum, people can request full-service catering with servers,

flatware, dishes, decorations and even outdoor tents from Worcester’s Creedon and Co. There are also options in between. John Lawrence, co-owner of Pepper’s Fine Food Catering in Northboro, says some of his clients want the food mostly or partially prepared and delivered. “We give them directions on how to heat it up and serve it.”

The most important things that caterers pro-vide are knowledge and care. “You don’t want an embarrassing situation where you don’t have enough food,” says Ignatius Chang, proprietor of Nancy Chang. Your catering company can provide you with the right amount of food for your party — within your budget. Ed Stacy, wine manager for Worcester’s KJ Baaron’s, works with caterers and advises clients on how to pair wine with their food so their event really shines. As an added service for their clients in 2008, John Creedon, president of Creedon and Co., provided shrimp — one of the most common requests — to help people with their holiday budgets.

Whether you’re having an at-home gathering or looking to reward and impress associates and clients in a corporate setting, a catered event is a simple and affordable choice to make any occa-sion extra-special, for guests and party-throwers alike.

1. Plan your budget.“Always go with a budget,” says Jean Sakchat of

El Basha. “You must have a firm limit of how much you want to spend. If you don’t plan your expens-es up front, it creates a stressful situation for every-one.

2. Plan ahead.“Call early,” says Barbara Cotter of Struck

Catering. “Some dates are already booked; some people started in August.” Another thing she sug-gests is to consider January for a party. “There’s less going on, and it’s less stressful.”

John Creedon of Creedon and Co. sees a lot of problems that arise when people wait until last minute. “People call Tuesday for a Friday event — or even the night before. What happens is sched-ule conflicts.” A catering company can only give quality service to so many people each day, so make sure you’ve booked the day you want.

3. Plan … even more.Ed Stacy stresses the importance of educating

oneself about what is going to be served.

KJ Baaron’s has an event consultant, and all of their wine tastings are geared toward hands-on learning about food and wine pairing. “If you get the perfect bottle for a meal, it enhances the food — and the food enhances the wine,” he says.

When alcohol is involved — whether it’s a cor-porate event or a home event — a catering service with a liquor license can ease your mind about serving alcohol. “People don’t want the responsi-bility of serving alcohol,” points out Ignatius Chang. It’s “much safer,” letting a licensed third party to handle the situation.

4. Get to know your caterers.“We get to know customers really well by plan-

ning parties,” says Cotter, describing how a good relationship with a caterer can make a big differ-ence. “Many request the same staff to come back, and [the client] knows they can trust us.”

Creedon offers clients the opportunity to come out and visit their office, warehouse, and kitchen. “We can also work out your menu and event via the Internet, over the phone, or in person.”

5. Quality means more than quantity “Whatever you do, however large or small it is,

make it special,” advises John Lawrence of Pepper’s Fine Food Catering. One of Pepper’s spe-cialties is “small plates,” where they serve several small portions of food so guests can have room to enjoy many different and unusual creations.

Justin Szostakowski of Isador’s Fruit & Deli specializes in organics, all natural, and local foods. “The quality of ingredients is the most important thing,” he notes.

6. Personalize your party. “Do part of it yourself,” suggests Szostakowski.

He also points out the importance of considering different guests’ needs, such as food allergies or sensitivities, kosher requirements, and vegetarian or vegan lifestyles.

Lawrence’s favorite client is “someone who has traveled — or traveled through cookbooks,” because then he or she can develop a great rapport and create a truly unique experience. “If you keep it interesting and innovative, everyone has fun.”

Savvy shopping tips for a

stress-free holiday season(ARA ) - ‘Tis the season to be shopping. And, as

holiday shopping lists continue to grow with family, friends, co-workers and even teachers to buy gift s for, it’s important to be a smart shopper and not only stretch your dollars but also fi nd quality gift s for everyone on your list.

Mom expert Stacy DeBroff of MomCentral.com has mastered how to shop for the holidays stress-free while still managing to get thoughtful gift s everyone will appreciate. “Th is holiday season, you have to get creative when it comes to shopping for many people on a limited budget,” says Debroff . “Even if you have just $5 or $10 dollars to spend on a person, there are great options out there; you just have to be wise about your purchasing decisions.”

DeBroff ’s No.1 holiday shopping strategy is to be prepared and get orga-nized for the hustle and bustle the season brings. She also suggests:

• Start early and stock up. Nothing’s worse than rushing into the mall, fi ghting traffi c and crowds for last-minute gift s. When you fi nd a gift you really like, consider giving that same gift to more than one person. Buy several, wrap them right away, and store them until the time of gift giving comes around.

• Call ahead. If there’s a particular hot gift you’re looking to buy, like the latest kids’ toys, call the store fi rst and make sure it’s in stock. Also, call ahead to verify store shop-ping hours. Oft en during the holidays retailers will extend their store hours to accommodate shopper’s busy schedules.

• Chip in together for big ticket items. Group

gift ing has become one of the latest shopping trends. In fact, 83 percent of women and 75 percent of men say they’ve participated in group gift ing and plan to do so again this holiday season. Sears off ers Givetogether a great online tool so you can gather together with friends and family to share in the cost of a great gift . From home electronics and appli-ances to jewelry, housewares and apparel, you will fi nd the best selection and gift options for everyone on your list.

“For me, Givetogether is a bett er way to shop

and makes it easier for families and friends to pool their money together to give a great gift with lots of thought behind it,” says DeBroff . “Th is online shop-ping tool really taps the social power of the Internet to allow a group to give a more signifi cant gift than they could manage individually.”

Lastly, remember to spread the holiday cheer with acts of kindness as you shop. Aft er all, that could be the greatest gift you give this season.
